Chester finds traces of cobalt where Barry was taken and Mark returns. Allegra is attacked during a cobalt gas attack at CCC Media, which nearly kills Taylor and Aariz. Khione revives them by growing plant cells in their bodies, but their skin turns green and they flee in horror. Mark calls Khione an abomination and he is shown to be possessed by the crystal. He knocks out Cecile and attacks Iris. She is defended by the Speed Force, who explains that Mark became the new vessel of the Negative Speed Force and convinces her to embrace her power. Khione frees Mark by disintegrating and reassembling his body, but the crystal disappears. Barry returns and Iris goes into labor. Khione makes plans to leave Central City in order to fulfill her role as a goddess and Barry disappears again. Elsewhere, in 2049, Malcolm Gilmore— Eddie's facsimile— goes to the CCPD where Daisy Korber is captain to learn about Eddie. A voice tells him to find Iris and he sees Eddie's memories. He breaks into CCC Media and digs up Eddie's grave only to find it empty. He realizes that he is Eddie and pulls out the bullet he shot himself with.

Trivia[]

  • The episode marked the directional debut for Kayla Compton and subsequently the only episode of The Flash she directed.
  • The episode's title sequence subtitles this episode as "The Blues", but the official title to the episode does not contain the subtitle.
    • This is a reference to the theme of the episode where blue is a background color that was being displayed and also with most of Team Flash wearing blue clothing in this episode.
  • "Malcolm Gilmore" is confirmed to be Eddie Thawne resurrected.
  • Khione using her powers to get rid of the Cobalt avatar out of Mark Blaine by turning him into dust is very similar to what Thanos did in Avengers: Infinity War where he snapped his fingers with the infinity stones by which half of the universe population became dust.
  • The Negative Speed Force telling Iris that it would kill her "little baby, too" is likely a reference to The Wizard of Oz, where the Wicked Witch of the West threatens to kill Dorothy and her "little dog, too."
  • The events of this episode is simultaneously taking place at the same time during the events of "A New World, Part One", until Barry appeared just in time for the birth of Nora West-Allen.
  • The Negative Speed Force is conditioning Eddie to have a reason to hate Barry; meaning, Eddie, like Eobard, is unfortunately going to be stuck in an unwinnable game of failures to change time and kill Barry.
  • The Speed Force confirms Khione is god-like like herself and the other Forces; explaining why she is missing the DNA markers and can do ANYTHING. Meaning that Caitlin DID kill herself by accident, allowing Khione to manifest by using her body as a vessel.
  • While not having as many as previous episodes, this episode has some callbacks and references to previous seasons mainly Season 1.
    • Barry realizing that Nora West-Allen is about to be born in which he asked Iris "right now?" is very similar to when he and Iris were discussing about having a child in the Season 4 episode "We Are The Flash" when Iris was suggesting to Barry about having a child and he asked "right now?" until Iris replied "not right now but some day" which took place in this episode.
    • Eddie's grave shown his date of death which is on May 19, 2015 which is the same day the Season 1 finale "Fast Enough" aired in which the events of this episode also took place on that same day.
    • Flashbacks of Eddie were shown in various episodes in Season 1:
      • Eddie committed suicide in an attempt to erase Eobard Thawne which took place in the Season 1 finale "Fast Enough"
      • Barry revealing his identity as The Flash to Eddie in the episode "Tricksters"
      • Eddie proposing to Iris on a bridge until Eobard interrupted the proposal and kidnapped him in the episode "The Trap"
      • Eddie giving Iris a key to his apartment on Christmas day in the Season 1 mid-season finale "The Man in the Yellow Suit"
    • This episode also has some similarities to Season 3.
      • Eddie hearing the voice of the Negative Speed Force in which it tells him to find answers of his previous life is similar to when Savitar would speak to a certain individual as a disembodied voice and would instruct them to find their purpose of their life by which he would lead them to a secret location in which he would turned them into meta-humans due to the fact that they were metahumans in an alternate reality before that said reality got erased. This took place during the events of the early part of Season 3.
      • Eddie recovering his memories is similar to when to Barry & Savitar recovered their memories in "Cause and Effect".

Goofs[]

  • The Speed Force says the Negative Forces have been disabling her, but it's actually the Negative Speed Force.
