"Evil wins when we let it destroy our faith in the power of good. Believe me, I know how hard it is."
—Anne Marie Flynn[src]

Anne "Annie" Marie Flynn is a former member of the Newcastle Crew and a nun of the Catholic Church in Mexico City. She is also the ex-lover of John Constantine.

Biography[]

Newcastle Crew[]

Anne Marie met John Constantine in 1997 when they were both teenagers. She was the one who introduced him to the world of the occult and helped him study magic while also researching magic with John's help. They ultimately started to become lovers although it was only a one-night stand before he broke it up, but they still remained good friends.[1]

However, her relationship with John would be damaged when she was present when John unintentionally damned Astra Logue to Hell, Anne was traumatized by this, so she became a nun, in order to pay for her sins. Since the incident she grew a strong hatred towards John to the point that she swore to kill him if she saw him again. She also blamed herself for introducing John to magic.[1]

Meeting John Again[]

Anne Marie was taking care of Martina and her newborn boy Diego when she was killed and Diego was kidnapped by a force unknown to her. Left with no choice she used a Bilocation Spell to contact John and demanded he went to Mexico and help her solve the problem. A day later, John arrived at her church with Zed and after hugging Chas, talked to Anne privately. In their conversation, Anne expressed her anger at John when he joked and shrugged off his apologies.[1]

The exorcists then proceeded to gather clues about what had been happening. Anne revealed that she knew John had been cheating on her when they slept together and she hated John's ego. Later, they were able to find that many other babies were missing. She then visited an old woman who told them of the Brujeria and then came to rescue them.[1]

Though John was able to defeat the demon, it had casted a spell to kill the two. Anne then shot John with a pistol before running off to save the babies. While living in guilt, Chas and Zed confronted her about John being alive. She then helped him defeat Pazuzu, but then they were interrupted by the Tempter and were forced run. However, Anne stabbed and killed the Tempter. The group laid John on a bed where they were cruelly mocked by Pazuzu. After that, Anne forgave herself for introducing Constantine to magic and banished Pazuzu's soul to hell.[2]

Powers and abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Magic: Having been the one who taught John magic and helped him study the occult, turning him into a master sorcerer, and a former member of the Newcastle Crew, it is safe to assume that Anne Marie is quite accomplished in Magic. However, despite being apparently an advanced and powerful sorcerer, she is apparently not Constantine's equal in magic, as she was unwilling to begin her investigation to find Diego without John.[1]
    • Light magic: Anne Marie, being a nun of the Catholic Church, is proficient in the use of light magic, which is her commonly practiced magic, as it is connected to God and positive energy.[1]
      • Exorcism: Anne Marie has shown the ability to exorcise a powerful demon from John's body. Anne's exorcism technique seems to be more traditional than John's, as she reads from the Bible and splashes holy water in the process. According to John, her exorcism is especially strong due to the religious epiphany she experienced, allowing her to request God's divine power and banish dark beings in his name.[2]
    • Dark magic: In her early years alongside John Constantine, she was known for having learned black magic lore and is thus capable of performing spells of dark magic origin, although she prefers light magic much more due to having become a nun and thus her abilities in dark magic are unknown.[1]
    • Bilocation: Anne Marie is capable of casting a spell that allows her to be in two places at the same time as a projection. She is able to project a physical and unstable form of her body. She used this ability to contact John while she was in Mexico.[1]

Abilities[]

  • Occult knowledge: Anne Marie has acquired extensive knowledge of the supernatural.[1]
  • Religious lore: Anne Marie has extensive knowledge of the lore of God and the Catholic Church, knowing certain prayers and light magic spells by heart.[1]
  • Basic Marksmanship: Anne Marie was able to fire a pistol, trying to protect herself and the babies from Invunche. When John advised not to do that, she apologized and shot him instead, leaving John as bait for Invunche.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In the DC comics, Sister Anne-Marie was once a young amateur magician who had befriended several like-minded individuals, including John Constantine. Although she did not know John very long, the soft-spoken Anne-Marie had developed a crush on the wild magus. She became a part of the ill-fated "Newcastle Crew" whose unsuccessful attempt to exorcise the demon Nergal from possessing young Astra Logue resulted in great emotional torment for the group. Anne-Marie was so traumatized by the experience that she turned to religion, became a nun, but the experience at Newcastle always haunted her. Anne-Marie was eventually slain by an entity called an Invunche, who had been specifically targeting those closely associated with John Constantine. Anne-Marie's ghost, as well as the spirits of several others, haunted Constantine for many years following their deaths.
