The thing with autism is that it's a spectrum. They say you are unlikely to find two autistic people that are the same. The Good Doctor shows a very extreme form of it. Since we're on the high functioning/more mild end and Hollywood tends to favor the lower functioning/more extreme end, I can see why you think they'd fail. Honestly, if they can at least show that William is autsitic and has good intentions at heart but does not realize it comes off as something bad, I would be fine with it.
Well the problem isn't about which form of functioning they show, it's the intent and accuracy on either one. For example, the Good Doctor basically says this guy has superpowers, and needs 3 more seasons to find love than the normal characters on TV when that isn't based around autism specifically. Same with William. Them acting like his very antagonistic arc is based off a medical condition is just the same as many misinterpretations of what autism is.
You've known your entire life and had interventions to help ease your symptoms. I have not. So if it is true, I can identify with him and can be more forgiving. But that's just me. I can say for a fact I'm interested in seeing what the show has in store for William.
I mean i'm not saying it is forbidden to like a performance of an autistic character. I'm just saying usually when done, it's by coincidence that someone has.
The reason I'm more forgiving than you in this case is because of my late diagnosis, I have had similar issues as William, which is why I'm more forgiving if his portrayal matches the issues I had in life. Good talk man! I'm off to bed. Tbh, I didn't consider he might be autistic until I talked it over with you. It was an epiphany I had while we were talking.
Interesting epiphany, but i shouldn't keep you.
I'm still not buying these new cast members, Eve is always and forever great but Kelly is always and forever just not that interesting and Andrea and William just aren't all that interesting so far, compared to last years new main cast which included the objectively the best Nia and Brainy, the amazing Ben and the not that great Haley, the ratio of great to not is reversed.

I didn't even know William was a main cast. I've been living under a rock. Please don't say "objectively best" because acting is an art and art is subjective. You think they're the best. Does not make it objective.
I didn't realize it till I checked the cast list partway through episode 1, and I read the announcement.
As for Nia and Brainy, I recognize that art is subjective and the reason I say objectively the best is because of that, partially because I find them to be just amazing, and partially because I find calling anything "objectively the best" inherently funny and like to make jokes (I used it in a more clearly joke fashion last time I said it by saying it was discovered with science, and how funny my jokes are is up to interpretation), it was never meant to be read seriously (though I completely understand why someone who can't hear my tone of voice or hasn't read my previous talking about like "the best" element, or a picture of "the best" in a dictionary being Nia and Brainy would think I was being serious, though honestly I'm not sure if I've actually verbally said those jokes).
I'll have to see more with what they do with William, but Andrea seems rather bland as a work antagonist.
