"Do you know why I started the Canaries, what it represents? This is more than just some rebellion group. It's a support system. This is a way for women to know we always have each other's backs no matter what happens, whenever we need it most, something I failed to do for a friend once, but ever since that happened with her, I made a promise to myself that I would never make that mistake again. That's why we wear these. To honor that promise and the bravery and the sacrifice shared with these amazing women, who somehow--no matter how many times they get knocked down--they always find the strength to get back up and fight again..."
Dinah Drake to Mia Smoak[src]

The Canary Network, simply known as the Canaries, was a network of vigilantes in an erased future founded by Dinah Drake to save Star City after the city fell during the Glades uprising.

History[]

Foundation[]

After the fall of Star City, Dinah Drake was removed as captain of the Star City Police Department and once again became an unauthorized vigilante. During her time on the run as Black Canary, she noticed a growing number of girls and women who were impoverished and alone, remembering a past decision where she had the chance to help Laurel Lance and decided not to, Dinah chose not to make the same mistake twice. She founded the Canary Network to act as a rebellion group for the corrupt police force and provide a support system for it's members.

One of the recruits was Zoe Ramirez, the daughter of Rene Ramirez, Dinah's ex-teammate and the vigilante known as Wild Dog. Laurel Lance eventually returned after redeeming herself by becoming the Black Canary of Earth-2, occasionally returning to Earth-1's Star City whenever Dinah needed help.[1]

Following clues left by Felicity, William Clayton returned to Star City determined to find out why Felicity sent him back and was assisted by Roy Harper, Dinah, and Zoe.[1] Dinah and Zoe agreed to help him. They went searching for Felicity's hideout and when they entered it, they were caught off guard when a magnet pulled all their weapons to a wall and a computer started counting down.

When William failed to hack the system, he realized how to stop the countdown and had Roy shoot an arrow at three green "tennis balls". After the countdown stopped, they discovered, to their horror, a plan to level all of Star City. William convinced them to help him find out what happened to Felicity as a way to remember her as the woman she was and set out to find the person she contacted last: "Blackstar".[2]

William, Roy, Dinah, and Zoe attempted to find Blackstar and where Felicity put away her reserve of bombs. Sometime later, they visited a fight club where Blackstar was in a fight. They interrogated her, and she lied that she had no knowledge of Felicity's plan. They then went to the Arrowcave and suddenly sedated and captured by Blackstar and Connor Hawke.

After they wake up, Blackstar revealed that Felicity wasn't dead. The group then fought with Blackstar and Connor Hawke, but Blackstar then revealed that she was Mia Smoak, the daughter of Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak, and William's half-sister.[3]

Laurel as Black Canary in 2040

Later, Galaxy One unleashed ZETA, a new force hunting down the Canary Network with a tech helmet powered by the Archer program. While the others wanted to hide, Mia wanted to fight back and ambushed one of the ZETA soldiers. Mia was overpowered, but was saved by Laurel, who told her to give the ZETA soldier's helmet to Felicity.[4]

ZETA soldiers then had everyone surrounded, but Mia managed to get her hands on a knife that one of the ZETAs gave her. With the help of the ZETA soldier, who turned out to be Connor, everyone was saved. Zoe also managed to save William and Rene. The group then gathered and planned how to destroy Archer, which was integrated into the wall that surrounded the Glades. Felicity then revealed that Archer was incapable of reading Mia's DNA, since there was no record on her after Felicity practically erased her existence. William then decided to use this to their advantage, as when Archer tried to read Mia's DNA, it could be destroyed with a virus.

As William, Mia, Zoe, and Connor climbed the wall and followed through with the plan, the virus failed to work. Rene then said that the wall could be destroyed by manually setting explosives planted on them in one of the wall towers. Mia, using her father's bow, reached the tower and set the charge. She narrowly managed to escape before the wall crumbled. With Star City saved, Felicity, Dinah, and Roy decided to take the blame on the wall's destruction so that Mia, William, Zoe, and Connor can live on. Dinah then transferred leadership of the Canaries to Zoe.[5]

The Monitor transports Mia, William and Connor to the present.

While facing the Deathstroke gang, Zoe was murdered by John Diggle, Jr., the leader of the gang.[6]

Later, William, Connor, and Mia were sent to 2019 by the Monitor, where they met the present day Oliver, Diggle, Dinah, and Rene in the Arrowcave.[6]

Team Arrow

After being drugged by Lyla Michaels on the command of Mar Novu, the trio arrived on Lian Yu to build a device that will help them during the Anti-Monitor Crisis. By the time the device was finished, The Monitor got Lyla Michaels to submit to him, therefore becoming Harbinger. Red skies appeared, indicating that the crisis had begun.[7] The Canaries presumably died during the Anti-Monitor Crisis after Earth-1 and the rest of the multiverse was destroyed by antimatter.[8]
