Dodgson is a former agent of Crows Security. He was the occasional lover of Beth Kane and the second-in-command of the Wonderland gang until he was arrested and sent to Blackgate Penitentiary.
Biography
Original multiverse
Early life
At some point in his life, Dodgson joined the military, most likely the Navy SEALs or Green Berets. Afterwards, he was hired as an agent of Crows Security.[1]
At first, Dodgson was extremely idealistic and passionate about his role in protecting Gotham City. Over time however, he began to resent Commander Jacob Kane, considering the man too soft for the job.[2] This lead Dodgson to join the Wonderland gang, becoming the second-in-command and the lover of its leader, Alice.[1] He was eventually entrusted with Alice's true identity of Jacob's presumed dead daughter, Beth.[3]
Mole in Crows Security
Dodgson began acting as Alice's mole inside of Crows Security. In 2018, the Crows worked at the turning off the Bat-Signal when the Wonderland gang ambushed the event, kidnapping Sophie Moore in the process. Following this, they worked security at the city's Movie in the Park. Dodgson was assigned to watch from an undeveloped skyscraper by Robinson Park.
Due to his position, Dodgson allowed Alice and her gang to bring Sophie in, hanging her on a plank of wood off the side of the building. He then left the group to their devices, driving a truck full of explosives to Robinson Park as a diversion before fleeing. This exposed him as a traitor.[1]
Afterwards at a briefing, Dodgson became a top-priority target of the Crows alongside Alice. Jacob explained the duo want to terrorize the citizens of Gotham City by undermining the people who were protecting them (i.e. the Crows). Dodgson and Alice were to be stopped, dead or alive.[3]
Kidnapped by Batwoman
After Alice and the Wonderland gang took refuge at the former Kane house, Dodgson reported that he couldn't find her knife. When he asked how Alice's sister, Kate Kane, fit into her plan, Alice stated that Dodgson was jealous and kissed him. Dodgson clarified that he wanted them to stay focused on their goal: ruin the the Crows' credibility in Gotham and let the city delve into chaos. Dodgson warned Alice not to let their mission get personal, to which Alice insisted it is personal since her own father gave up on her.
Later, Alice sent Dodgson to Mary Hamilton's clinic with the order to kill her due out of jealously due to Mary's role as Kate's "new sister". After causing a blackout, Dodgson began choking Mary but she fought back by injuring Dodgson in the leg with a scalpel, preventing him from pursuing her. As Dodgson grabbed an emergency axe to break down a closet Mary hid in, Batwoman then intervened and knocked him down.
That night, Batwoman interrogated Dodgson by beating him up, wanting to know everything about Alice.[3] Dodgson was left in Batwoman's captivity for over a week, causing him to eventually develop an infection. He was then brought to Mary's clinic, where Batwoman asked her to deal with Dodgson's wound.
That evening, while Dodgson was handcuffed to the bed and drugged with morphine, he began hallucinating, calling for Alice. Mary began impersonating Alice in an attempt to extort Dodgson for information on her villainous plot. Dodgson managed to reveal that a key component was a mysterious figure named "Mouse". Later, Batwoman returned to the clinic and planted a subdermal transmitter on Dodgson in order to track him after he returned to Alice.[4]
Ambush at Dusty's Roadside Diner
Dodgson was then set free and returned to the Wonderland gang hideout, certain that no one had followed him and he simply managed to escape Batwoman. As Alice patched him up, she told Dodgson, "forgetting pain is convenient. Remembering it is agonizing. But recovering the truth is worth the suffering." She warned Dodgson that if he had told Batwoman anything of value, it would be "off with [his] head". Shortly after, Batwoman ambushed the Wonderland Gang and kidnapped Alice.
However, Dodgson managed to escape and, following his Alice's plan, he went to Dusty's Roadside Diner with a handful of men. While Mouse drugged and captured Kate and set Alice free, Dodgson engaged Jacob and Sophie in a shootout outside. As Sophie distracted the Wonderland gang members, Jacob managed to shoot a propane tank, making it explode and scattering the criminals in the process. Dodgson was then personally confronted by Jacob for betraying the Crows.
Dodgson simply responded that he joined the Crows to make Gotham a better place for all. Instead, Jacob lead the organization into dividing the city as due to their deeds, only the wealthy are protected, which Jacob was too blind to see. Dodgson then taunted Jacob how he was also too blind to see his own daughter, prompting Jacob to angrily slam Dodgson to the ground and beat him up until Sophie pulled him away.
Dodgson was subsequently arrested by Crows Security[2] and sentenced to Blackgate Penitentiary.[5]
Anti-Monitor Crisis
During the Anti-Monitor Crisis, Dodgson as well as everyone in the multiverse except for the seven Paragons, was killed in an antimatter wave by the Anti-Monitor on December 10, 2019,[6] only to be restored a month later, after the Paragons and the Spectre created a new universe.[7]
New multiverse
Assault in Blackgate
Around a year after Dodgson was incarcerated, Jacob was arrested for the alleged murder of his wife, Catherine Hamilton-Kane and imprisoned at Blackgate. Seeing it as an opportunity to get revenge on him, Dodgson ambushed his former commander in the showers, stabbed Jacob with an improvised knife, and started a violent fight with him. Before he could kill Jacob though, another inmate, Reggie Harris, intervened and managed to knock Dodgson out.[5]
Personality
Dodgson is a serious, gruff, rude, and no-nonsense man, as well as a pragmatic soldier, albeit disillusioned regarding Gotham's corruption and more than willing to let it fall into ruin.[1] However, he is much more grounded in reality than Alice, to the point of being the one who reminded her not to focus too much on her vendetta against Jacob Kane since it could negatively affect their plan.[3]
Dodgson was once a more honorable and idealistic individual until he lost faith in both the military and the Crows. He grew resentful of Jacob Kane due to considering his superior too soft to protect Gotham and being responsible for its rundown state.[2]
