"Team Arrow may have Starling City purring like a kitten, but the rest of the world is still a very dangerous place. Including Corto Maltese."
Lyla Michaels[src]

Corto Maltese is a small country located in (or off the coast of/in the Atlantic Ocean near) South America on Earth-1.

Overview[]

Corto Maltese is considered to be popular for its beautiful beaches.[1]

History[]

Deadshot was said to have operated out of the country.[2]

After deciding to leave Starling City, Thea Queen went with Malcolm Merlyn to go and train in a villa at Corto Maltese near the water.[3] During her stay, Thea went by the alias "Mia" (Oliver's daughter's name sake). About six months later though, Thea returned home with her brother.

In Corto Maltese, Oliver Queen, John Diggle, and Roy Harper stopped Mark Shaw from selling top secret files of A.R.G.U.S. agents to Milo Armitage.[4]

The country is optimal for growing Vitura, a hypnotic plant which makes the victim highly susceptible to suggestion while retaining no memory of the influence. The island itself (off the coast of South America (Earth-1)) was seen on a map, when Felicity Smoak was tracking a plane from A.R.G.U.S. that landed at a private airstrip, somewhere in Starling City.[5]

Malcolm Merlyn began operating in Corto Maltese out of a fortress, but was interrupted by the Hidden, seeking revenge on him.[6]

After being rescued from an A.R.G.U.S. facility, Cayden James went to Corto Maltese to hide out. He began working on his plan to destroy Star City, having Alena Whitlock visit him while there. Cayden eventually left and returned to Star City after discovering Alena betrayed him to Team Arrow.[7]

Behind the scenes[]

  • "Corto Maltese" is entirely fictional, also appearing in Frank Miller's graphic novel Batman: The Dark Knight Returns as the name of an island at the center of an incident not unlike the Cuban missile crisis. The name was given as a homage to the Italian comic series of the same name. It was later mentioned in the 1989 film Batman (set on Earth-89) and the TV series Smallville (set on Earth-167).
  • The real location of Malcolm's mansion is the Oceanographic Museum, located in Monaco.
