For the Arrow episode, see "Corto Maltese".

Corto Maltese, also spelled Corto-Maltese, is a country on Earth.

Overview[]

Corto Maltese is considered to be popular for its beautiful beaches.[1]

According to Mxyzptlk, Corto Maltese also has a jungle with caves.[2]

History[]

At some point, Mxyzptlk hid an amulet in a cave in Corto Maltese. The cave was later used as a base by a guerilla warlord.

In mid-2020, Supergirl went to Corto Maltese in search of the amulet to use against Nyxlygsptlnz. The International Harbinger published an article about how she was sighted there.[2]

At some point, Corto Maltese build an island in the Kaznian Sea without permission and started drilling for oil.

Perez

In late 2021, the two nations held a peace summit in The Hague. They suddenly became hostile toward one another due to Nyxlygsptlnz's use of the Courage Totem (who can strip courage away, thereby instilling the people with paranoia and fear). Martian Manhunter and Supergirl tried to avoid the war between the nations, but they failed. Eventually, things got out of hand and the two nations started a nuclear war, and the Superfriends teamed up and managed to stop all the missiles, preventing the war.[3]

Later, Corto Maltese and Kaznia agreed to a truce, so Prime Minister Perez and President Zakharov went to the National City to negotiate the official treaty. CatCo reporter Kara Danvers was supposed to interview them, but she was late and the the politicians left. Andrea Rojas was able to salvage her faux pas and convince Perez and Zakharov to extend their trip another day at the Civic Center, but Kara left CatCo and told Andrea that William Dey should do the interview.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Corto Maltese is entirely fictional, also appearing in Frank Miller's graphic novel Batman: The Dark Knight Returns as the name of an island at the center of an incident not unlike the Cuban missile crisis. The name was given as a homage to the Italian comic series of the same name.
