Cygnus X-1 is a deadly bioweapon that the Ninth Circle intended on unleashing upon Star City.
History[]
While on a tenure at Darpa, Roy Stewart oversaw an experimental weapon known as Project Cygnus X-1. According to Stewart, the project was shelved because it was too dangerous and unstable. It's goal was to genetically engineer bacteria to consume the by-product of nuclear fission.
In 2019, Dante orders the Ninth Circle to steal Archer to locate the DNA of people involved in the project. The Ninth Circle capture Roy Stewart and his stepson John Diggle to extract the access code to Cygnus X-1 from Stewart. After torturing Diggle, Stewart gives up the code and are rescued by Team Arrow. With help from Alena Whitlock, Felicity Smoak hacks back into Archer and tracks down the bioweapon, which the Ninth Circle had already done so using Archer, to a secure facility. Just as Dante, Emiko Queen, and the Ninth Circle retrieve the bioweapon, Team Arrow infiltrate the facility. While Felicity and Alena destroy Archer so that the Ninth Circle can't regain it's control, Oliver confronts Emiko, who exfiltrates her and they escape with Cygnus X-1, after which Emiko kills Dante. After Stewart's departure, Team Arrow plan their next move on finding out the Ninth's Circle plans in using Cygnus X-1.
Team Arrow recruit Roy Harper to prevent the Ninth Circle from unleashing the bioweapon. During the mission, Roy experiences a rush of Bloodlust resulting in Roy murdering a few security guards, foiling the mission. The team decide to cover it up to protect Roy by lying about the mission during an interrogation with Dinah and the Star City Police Department (SCPD). As a result, Oliver names Emiko as the threat. When the team are set free, Felicity tracks down the Ninth Circle's headquarters, where Oliver confronts Emiko once again who reveals she sent the mission's security footage to SCPD. Emiko blows up the building and escapes, burying Oliver. After hallucinating Tommy Merlyn who talks to him about how to deal with Emiko, his team locates and rescues him. Meanwhile, the SCPD raids Smoak Tech, accusing Team Arrow of both the cover-up and the biological weapon, which was traced to Archer. Felicity and Alena escape to the bunker. Emiko is revealed to have framed the attack on the SCPD, and steals the weapon back from the team. Oliver tries to reason with Emiko and refuses to take the opportunity to kill her, allowing her to escape.
Emiko spreads the virus throughout the city and holds the detonator in the former Queen Consolidated building. Team Arrow, with Curtis, Laurel, and Ben Turner, evacuates the building and disables the relay to the other bombs, while Oliver confronts Emiko, pleading for her to abandon the dark path. Beatrice, the Ninth Circle's true leader, informs Emiko that her failure to destroy Star City, while publicly exposing the Ninth Circle, has led to the council turning on her. Oliver and Emiko fight the Ninth Circle together, but Emiko is mortally wounded by Beatrice and tells Oliver to hide Felicity and their baby, before he escapes the exploding building.[citation needed]
