The Fire Totem is a mystical object that allows the user to harness the power of fire. It is one of six mystical Zambesi totems presented to the great tribes. After being lost for centuries, it was found by Adam Macalester and donated to the Detroit Museum of Natural History, from which it was stolen by a man hired by Benatu Eshu, before being reclaimed and returned to the museum. Damien Darhk later stole the totem, which the Legends later gained and Mick Rory became its bearer. Once the Legends defeated Mallus, Mick gave the Fire Totem to Kuasa from the new timeline to protect.

History

The five great Zambesi tribes presented with mystical totems

Five of the Zambesi tribes presented with mystical totems.

Origins

After the people of Zambesi faced numerous attacks from their neighbors and nature, they prayed for protection. Their prayers were answered as the six great tribes were each presented a mystical Totem harnessing a power of each of the elemental forces. A tribe was presented the Fire Totem; the Totem with the power to control fire.[1]

Rediscovery

After being lost to the sands of time, the Fire Totem was discovered in 2015 by Adam Macalester during his exhibition to find the lost totems of Zambesi.[1] The Totem was placed on display in the Detroit Museum of Natural History, where it was then stolen by a man hired by Benatu Eshu.[2] After having the Fire Totem brought to him, Benatu threatened to use its power to burn down Detroit if Mari McCabe did not surrender her Spirit Totem to him. Eventually, Mari was able to defeat Eshu and smash the Fire Totem to pieces, rendering it harmless; although her sister Kuasa, who had been wielding the Water Totem against Eshu, was killed in the struggle to get the Fire Totem away from Benatu.[3]

Battling Mallus

After its shards were returned to the museum, the Fire Totem was subsequently stolen in 2018 by Damien Darhk, who was collecting totems for Mallus. A resurrected Kuasa stated that while in pieces, the Fire Totem should still be feared, and that totems could never be destroyed completely, stating that it would take a “brilliant mind” to fix it. They then forced Ray Palmer, whom they'd kidnapped, to figure out how to repair it. Upon analysis, Ray stated that in order to fix the Fire Totem, they'd either need to take it back to the big bang to expose it to enough energy to reignite the Totem, or invent cold fusion. Damien Darhk then revealed to Ray that cold fusion had been invented in 1962 by an East German physicist named Bernhardt Vogel, but that Darhk himself had been hired to assassinate him before the world could learn of the man's breakthrough. They then traveled to 1962 East Berlin to prevent the younger Damien Darhk from killing him, so they could find out how to use cold fusion. He ended up getting killed anyway, but moments before dying, Vogel gave Ray all of his notes on cold fusion; enabling Ray to fix the Totem. Wally West arrived on the scene a short time later and was able to secretly steal the Fire Totem from Damien Darhk while rescuing Ray; reuniting the latter with the Legends.[4]

After Ray successfully repaired the Totem using a cold fusion reactor he'd built, it was then given to Mick Rory, who used its power to overwhelm Sara Lance; the latter of whom was being possessed by Mallus through the Death Totem.[5]

Mick later wielded the Totem again in the Legends' final confrontation with Mallus; both when they tried using all the totems against the demon at once, and when they combined the Totems' powers to conjure something that could kill him. Afterwards, it was left in Zambesi.[6]

Trivia

  • The Fire Totem was used by Benatu Eshu to destroy the Water Totem.[3]
  • Despite the shards of the Fire Totem going "dark and dim" according to Mari, the shards appear to be active once more after being stolen by Damien Darhk, who determined that the totem could somehow be fixed, after being told by Kuasa that a totem can never truly be destroyed.
  • When Mick Rory became the Fire Totem's new bearer, he discovered he could light his own farts on fire thanks to it.
