"Down there, they twist a man's soul until he's no longer human."
John Constantine[src]

Hell, also known as the Underworld[1] and Sheol,[2] is an inter-dimensional plane of existence where demons, fallen angels, and the souls of damned humans reside. The souls that died are sent there to be tortured by the other demons for the rest of eternity. Furcifer implies that some souls who are sent to Hell can become demons as well. Certain parts of Hell are extremely hot, according to John Constantine.[3] It was ruled by the Triumvirate of Hell, but nearly fell under Neron's rule in 2019.

After Neron's death, Astra Logue releases the Encores (infamous evil-doers who died, came to Hell, and resurrected from it to continue with their misdeeds) and plots secretly against the Triumvirate of Hell to become the new queen of Hell. After Astra left Hell to join the Legends, it's not known who rules Hell.

History

"So I grew up in Hell, had minions do my bidding, and rose to power 'til I practically ran the place."
—Astra Logue[src]
Pathway to Hell

Pathway to Hell, opened by Constantine to get rid of the Devil's Acetate

In 2014, during a resurrection spell for Natalie Logue[4], John Constantine accidentally summoned a demon who possessed Natalie's daughter, Astra Logue. John then attempted to summon a greater demon, Nergal, to expel the lesser demon out of her. However, Nergal dragged her away, damning her to Hell.[5]

When Constantine turned the Devil's acetate's dark magic upon itself and sent the record to Hell, a great red-lit pathway downwards into the ground was left in wake of the acetate's "falling" into Hell.[6]

Constantine was somehow sent to Hell, sometime between late 2015 and early 2016.[7] He finally got out around May 2016.[8]

On Earth-19, specifically, the world Breacher hails from, Hell is primarily called "Sheol".[2]

In 2018, Constantine and the Legends began utilizing a spell that sent magical creatures they encountered to Hell. These beings were formerly kept in an extra-dimensional prison alongside the demon Mallus. Notable beings that the Legends have encountered and sent to Hell include an Unicorn[9] and the Fairy Godmother.[3]

When Neron takes control of Ray Palmer's body, Constantine enters Hell in order to save him.[10] In Hell, Constantine received an offer from Satan to save Ray or Astra's life. John chose Astra, but she grew up in Hell and doesn't want to be saved.[11]

The Triumvirate of Hell nearly fell under Neron's rule in 2019.[12]

When Astra began resurrecting some of history's most notorious villains, Constantine began traveling to and from Hell at will by ingesting blood or other essences from the so-called "Encores" the Legends captured.[13]

Angry at Harrison Nash Wells for releasing Mobius and helping to start the Anti-Monitor Crisis, J'onn J'onzz told Nash that he almost damned everyone to Hell.[14]

Gary Green accompanied the Legends for a ritual to travel to Hell, without success. So he did a ritual to go with Ava Sharpe and Mick Rory to Hell and the ritual was a success. The trio were tricked and captured by Astra. Upon learning how Lachesis was manipulating her, Astra decided to choose her own destiny and leave Hell. So they returned to the Waverider.[15] It's not known who rules Hell now.

Astra told her origin in Hell in an attempt to join a sorority.[16] Zari Tarazi tells Constantine to go to Hell when he tries to dissuade her from resurrecting her brother; he reminds her that he has been there and back.[17]

EARTH-PRIME

Trivia

  • Lena believes her torment in hell would be living in a reality where she works together with her brother Lex.[22]
  • Going by Breacher's expletive, Earth-19 calls hell "Sheol".
  • Hell does have time, but it flows differently than on Earth.
    • When Constantine went to Hell, he saw the adult Astra Logue; only five years had passed since she was banished there as a child.
    • Despite Constantine entering hell through a portal in the Dark Ages, he ended up in "the present day" (the same day Neron was attempting to take over hell).
    • Souls freed from Hell such as the Encores are somehow able to navigate through time to where their deceased bodies were at the point of death.

Behind the scenes

  • Scenes of torture presumably happening in Hell are used in the intro for Constantine.
  • Since Lucifer was revealed to take place on Earth-666 in the Arrowverse, each Earth likely has its own Hell. However, it is also possible that each Earth has a different section of Hell.
