- "Show me the treasure I seek."
"Yeah, that compass must have some sort of hell powers. He's using it to track the ring."
"Okay, then we need to get the compass." - —Black Caesar, John Constantine, and Zari Tarazi[src]
The hell compass was a navigational tool utilized by Black Caesar upon his resurrection as an Encore.
History[]
After finding two of the three pieces of the Loom of Fate, John Constantine attempted to utilize a spell to summon the ring that disguised the last piece directly to his house due to the nature of the spell used to hide the final Loom fragment. Still recovering after a near-fatal encounter with the Fate Atropos, Sara passed out when Constantine tried to use a spell to borrow energy from each of the Legends in order to retrieve the ring. When Sara collapsed, Ava and Charlie ran to check on her, causing the whole group to lose focus. This kept the spell from working as well as it should've, and as a result, the spell did draw the ring to the house, but in the wrong time period. When the circle the Legends had formed broke ranks, John and Zari fell through a mystical portal that had suddenly formed, ending up in 1910 in the building that they knew to be Constantine's house in 2020. Sensing what had happened, Lachesis, having stolen Astra's collection of soul coins that controlled the Encores Astra had resurrected, sent several Encores through time to 1910 to retrieve the ring. In exchange for their successful execution of this task, the one that brought it to Lachesis would be free to return to living life on Earth as they pleased. As Henry VIII and Black Caesar pointed out, that meant that only one of them would live; the rest would be sent back to hell. This propelled Clyde Barrow to use his hell rifle to shoot Henry VIII, subsequently prompting all of the Encores to threaten one another with the hell weapons they'd received upon their resurrections (with John also caught in the mix; posing as Jack the Ripper). In spite of the fact that Zari (masquerading as Cleopatra) did initially seem to get the Encores to form an alliance; saying that if they found the ring, they'd have the leverage to get Lachesis to let them all go free, the truce didn't last. Clyde and his criminal partner Bonnie sought to kill the other Encores anyway, viewing them as rivals. While Black Caesar was attempting to locate the ring with the compass, Clyde obliterated the unsuspecting pirate; shooting him without giving the pirate a chance to even know he was being targeted.
John and Zari, having noticed what Black Caesar had been trying to do, grabbed the compass from where Black Caesar had dropped it upon being shot and tried doing the same thing he had. However, their efforts proved fruitless due to the potency of the spell used to conceal the ring.[1]

- This device may be a reference to Jack Sparrow's compass in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Said compass could point its bearer to the one thing they want most in the world, as long as the person using it was certain of what it was they wanted at that given time.
