"I Am Legends" is the twelfth episode of the fifth season of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and the eightieth episode overall. It aired on May 19, 2020.

Synopsis

After drinking from Chalice, the Legends have immortality for 24 hours, which gives them time get to the Waverider and use the Loom of Fate. However, they quickly discover that the sisters have stolen the Waverider and they are stuck at Constantine’s house in the middle of nowhere in London during a Zombie Apocalypse. Meanwhile, Gary is left on the ship and once he discovers what is going on, he takes something important to the sisters.[src]

Plot

The Legends, except Zari Tarazi, now have immortality for a day so they set their timers for twenty-four hours; however, Astra Logue and the Waverider are missing. The team cannot believe that they have been betrayed. Ava Sharpe remembers that there are branches to the Time Bureau all over the world, London included, so the Legends prepare to go there. As Sara Lance touches Ava, Sara gets a precognitive vision, but decides to lie and pretend that she did not. Mick Rory commandeers a transit bus and the Legends begin their journey.

On the Waverider, Gary Green is feeding Gary Jr. II when Gideon screams in distress; Atropos and Lachesis have commandeered the ship with Astra's help and Gary knows that he is alone against the Fates. Atropos does not like Astra and proposes to kill her now that they have the Loom of Fate, but Lachesis calms her. Astra's bottom line is the resurrection of her mother, but Lachesis shows her the future where Astra mourns her mother's death yet again, this time of natural causes; Astra realizes that her goal is very temporary. While the two are conversing, Atropos casts a spell that begins a zombie apocalypse.

The Legends find themselves fighting Zombies after Mick hits one with the bus, disabling the vehicle. The British military arrive and tell the Legends not to move; to prove their seriousness, Ava is given a fatal head shot. Thanks to the Chalice of Dionysus, she recovers, causing the military to be even more frightened of the "sentient zombies". The Legends are captured, but Sara, prepping Ava in leadership, has her lover rally the team to escape. Zari and John Constantine decide to go their own way in order to get a vehicle to continue the journey instead of walking.

Meanwhile, Gary has stolen the Loom with the help of Gideon, only to learn that it was his imagination after he was severely electrocuted. The Fates capture Gary, but he uses a spell to hide the rings. Astra is chosen to torture her teammate for the prize. Gary talks to Astra and convinces her to talk to him about herself and her relationship with her mother, citing that before death, there must be good during life.

Zari and Constantine return with an ambulance from a junkyard after they have an adventure there where he purposefully kills her to get them past the zombie population. The Legends arrive in London to find that the time courier they have sought is not charged and is momentarily useless. Frustrated, Zari storms off and Constantine chases; the two eventually have sex to relieve their tensions.

Waiting for the courier to charge, as zombies surround the building, Sara reveals to Ava that she has been prepping her for leadership because Sara envisioned that she will die in the London branch. Soon, the twenty-four hours expires. The zombies attack and, during the melee, the future becomes the present and Sara is killed in battle as she distracts the undead from the other Legends.

Astra fails to kill Gary and the Fates are disappointed; Atropos kills Astra. Clotho arrives on the Waverider, having used the time courier for herself, gets the Loom from the trusting Gary, and is reunited with her two sisters triumphant.

Trivia

• The episode's title is a reference to the 2007 film I Am Legend.
  • It may also be a further reference to the fact that Charlie is the only Legend to verifiably survive the zombies, as protagonist Robert Neville does in the film's source material.
  • The fact that the gang takes refuge in a pub, during a zombie outbreak, might be a reference to the movie shaun of the dead, who also takes place in London. In this movie, one of the main goal of the protagonist is to reach their usual pub while escaping zombies.
• The episode's story was written by Ray Utarnachitt, and the teleplay was written by Leah Poulliot and Emily Cheever, but all are simply credited as writers.
• This is the third episode to deal with zombies after the episodes "Abominations" and "Zari, Not Zari".
• Mick mentions about being in an prison transport which most likely references the events of the end of The Flash episode "Revenge of the Rogues" in which he and Leonard Snart were being transported to Iron Heights, before being rescued by Snart's sister Golden Glider.
  • This is also a meta-reference to Dominic Purcell's starring role in Prison Break.
• One of the zombies in the crowd Constantine walks through with Zari looks like George Romero, who is famous for being the director of zombie movies.
• When Constantine and Zari arrive with the van, Zari says, "Get in losers, we're going Looming!" This is a reference to a quote from the 2004 film Mean Girls, "Get in loser, we're going shopping!"
• There are two moments that foreshadow that the Gideon Gary interacts with is not actually Gideon, but in fact Gary Jr. II. The first is when Gideon inexplicably starts hopping like a rabbit to distract Atropos. The second is Gideon acting affectionate to Gary when it's been shown that Gideon, like the Legends, doesn't respect Gary.
• The gang's quest to track down the Loom of Fate leads to a thought-provoking conversation in which they have to decide how to use the Loom without falling victim to its temptations. This whole plot point is rather derivative of season 2's storyline in which the Legends had to resist the urge to change destiny with the Spear of Destiny.
• The England Zombie Apocalypse is similar to the DC Comics miniseries DCeased, where a zombie apocalypse spreads from Metropolis and many heroes are killed during the infection.
• Zari tells the team that they are "275.8..." but is cut off by Nate asking "Miles or Kilometres?". 275.8 miles puts the team in the North of England, and in line with Northumberland, which is where John's house is stated to be, and also where Newcastle is, the city that John has strong connections to.

Goofs

• Even before Mick takes over, the bus is driving on the wrong side of the road for the UK; it should be on the left unless they are on a one-way road. The steering wheel is similarly also on the incorrect side of the vehicle.
• The bus that the team commandeers is not used anywhere in the UK, due to traffic driving on the left hand side of the road, unlike the US and most of the rest of Europe. However, single decker buses like this are commonplace, just and double deckers.
  • Ava tells Sara that Mick is driving the bus on the wrong side of the road, however, the bus stop and the drivers seat on the bus are also on the wrong side.
