"Ironically, on my—on our Earth, this helmet stood for hope."
Harrison Wells to Jay Garrick[src]

Jay Garrick's helmet is a metallic helmet that was used by Hunter Zolomon, and later Jay Garrick, as their respective superhero identity, The Flash. It was said by Harrison Wells that helmet was a symbol of hope for the people of Earth Two, and deserved to be worn by the real Flash, to which Jay agreed with. It was originally a part of the suit that Hunter Zolomon used while in the guise of the Flash. It later became a part of the suit that the real Jay Garrick used as the Flash of Earth Three.

History

"Never thought I'd see that again. It was my father's, from the War of the Americas."
Hunter Zolomon on the helmet[src]

The helmet was first seen by Team Flash when it comes through the wormhole in S.T.A.R. Labs. When Joe West asks what it is, Eobard Thawne says that it is his cue to leave.[1]

The Flash suit (Jay Garrick)

Hunter Zolomon originally used the helmet in his identity as "Jay Garrick", the Flash of Earth Two.

The helmet originally belonged to James Zolomon which he used in the War of the Americas. One night his young son Hunter came downstairs and caught him abusing his wife, James spotted him and gave him his Helmet and forced him to watch him murder his mother. Hunter was sent to the orphanage, yet he kept the helmet as a memento ever since. At some point of time, he additionally decorated the military helmet with golden-colored wings made of some sort of metal. It is unknown where the helmet was located when Hunter was convicted and imprisoned in the asylum for his crimes as a serial killer. However, he somehow managed to regain hold of it.[2]

Years later when Hunter obtained super speed and broke out of the asylum for mentally insane, he became a "speed demon" known as Zoom, intent on proving himself the greatest speedster in the multiverse.[2] Around that time he encountered Jay Garrick, a speedster from Earth Three, whose name and vigilante identity as "the Flash" Hunter stole, imprisoning the real Jay at his lair. Inspired by Jay Garrick's superhero identity, Hunter used a similar Flash suit of his own (although based on his father's soldier uniform), which also featured the winged helmet.[3]

During the crisis on two Earths, Hunter Zolomon left a time remnant of himself on Earth One, when he realized he had to appear on Earth Two as Zoom. He then killed said time remnant of his before the eyes of Team Flash, giving Barry Allen the motivation to avenge the death of "Jay Garrick", improving his speed, only for Zoom to later absorb it. The Flash's helmet remained on Earth One, where it was kept on display to honor "Jay". After finding out Zoom's real identity, Team Flash still kept the helmet to keep Barry motivated and for Cisco Ramon to focus on his "Vibe" powers despite him complaining about it.[2]

The Flash (Jay Garrick)

Soon Hunter was defeated by Team Flash and they freed the masked prisoner that Hunter kept locked up, revealing him to be the real Jay Garrick, a doppelganger of Henry Allen. Jay added the helmet to his suit thanks to the advice from Harry Wells, to keep giving hope to people who see him as a hero and to take something away from the man who imprisoned him. Caitlin Snow complimented Jay, saying that the helmet suits him.[3] Jay Garrick continued wearing the helmet as the Flash of Earth Three, most notably in defeating his Earth's Trickster and Barry Allen's fight against Savitar.[4]

Trivia

  • Other than being part of the suit, it can also be used as a weapon as Hunter Zolomon was seen punching it at super speed and causing a sonic blast.

Behind the scenes

  • Unlike the comics, where the helmet belonged to Jay Garrick alone, The Flash season 2 featured a different backstory. It was originally presented as a helmet worn by James Zolomon, later used by his son Hunter, who used the helmet as part of his guise as the Flash of Earth Two. Ultimately, the helmet was given to Jay Garrick, the Flash of Earth Three because of its reputation as a symbol of hope.
  • In the comics, whenever Jay's helmet fell off when he was running, Jay would vibrate his face to hide his identity.
