Behind the scenes

  • The character is a reference to real-life cult film director, writer, producer, and composer John Carpenter.
  • The movie Rene attempts to reference is one of John Carpenter's Escape dilogy, which includes titles Escape from New York and Escape from L.A.. Detroit was nowhere to be seen in the franchise with proposed third movie having the working title Escape from Earth.
    • There is however an unrelated documentary in production named Escape from Detroit, with the title likely alluding to John Carpenter's movies.
    • Assorted nods in "Slay Anything" are alluding to Halloween, another movie directed by Carpenter, who is name-dropped in the episode.
