The Joy buzzer is a modified electric device that belonged to the late Jack Napier/Joker.

History[]

At some point, the Joy buzzer was created by Kiki Roulette for the Joker.[1] On January 26, 2003,[2] the Joker got on the young Marquis Jet's school bus, placed his electric joy buzzer on Marquis' head and sent an electrical charge through his brain, rendering his empathy dormant.[3]

Renee Montoya got ahold of the joy buzzer and kept it in her office below City Hall. Because of this, Batwoman and Alice were not able to find it.[4]

John Diggle and Jada Jet broke into Renee's office and took the joy buzzer.[5] Jada gave Batwoman the joy buzzer in exchange for getting her son back.[6] The Bat Team tried to fix the object but couldn't, so Mary and Alice took it to its creator, Kiki Roulette. Kiki took them to the Joker's workshop and pretended she wanted to fix it, but she was actually working for Marquis Jet.[1]

Later, Alice tried to steal Kiki's joy buzzer, but before she could get Marquis killed Kiki and took the joy buzzer. Alice also tried to steal from him but couldn't, so she told him where the Batcave was and he gave her the object, but when she was going to use it, Luke used a batarang to take it from her and the joy buzzer was given to Ryan.[7]

Ryan and Mary discussed whether to use the joy buzzer on Marquis or Alice. After Ryan took the object to Arkham and Alice decided to try to get sane for herself, Ryan ended up using the buzzer in Marquis and making him go back to normal.[8]

Capabilities[]

Functions[]

  • Electric jolt: The joy buzzer is capable of electrocuting anyone who comes into contact with it. The buzzer's electrocution is specifically designed to render the empathy center in the victim's brain dormant, thereby turning the victim amoral, if left in this mentally "damaged" state at such a very young age, the recipient is likely to become sociopathic as they mature. As seen with Marquis Jet, a second shock from the same device can fully reverse the effects even many years after the initial shock.[8]

Appearances[]

Batwoman[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In the DC comics, the Joker often used a modified novelty joy buzzer strapped to the palm of his hand. The buzzer administered a lethal dose of electricity into anyone who came into contact with it.
