- "Well, maybe meta-humans and superpowers were given to us to deal with all the crazy."
- —Cisco Ramon[src]
Following the explosion of the S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator an unknown, but large, number of individuals had their lives transformed. Many of those affected by the explosion and its further effects were given superhuman powers or abilities, being named meta-humans, (often referred to simply as "metas"). This happened on Earth-2 and various other earths, such as Earth-27A as well. It was confirmed by H.R. Wells that meta-humans are called "meta-homanids" on Earth-19.[1]
Not all individuals who have superhuman powers or abilities have been gained them by being exposed to a/n S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator explosion, as many experienced mutation in some other way, in ancient times the first known way of becoming a meta-human was by exposure to the Philosopher's Stone, other ancient means of gaining powers are mystical such as the Anansi Totem and the Khushu Idol, some, like Slade Wilson, had their DNA genetically modified by being injected with the Mirakuru serum, giving them superhuman physical attributes, senses, and an accelerated healing factor. Eobard Thawne's biomolecular enhancer and some Thanagarian Nth metal meteorites would have similar properties, additionally turning its users into monstrous creatures; as would the Stardust drug, modified to change beings on a molecular level. The drug Green Light also turns ordinary people into Green Light Babies, which are also known as meta-humans.

This ability allows speedsters to withstand large amounts of gravimetric force and protects the environment from the harm caused by high speed travel. Speedsters can build up their aura to be a billion times more powerful than the force of a black hole. This aura also seems to affect kinetic energy and inertia as Barry Allen was able to throw off the Turtle's ability to steal kinetic energy and increase inertia on his victims. This would also explain why speedsters can grab people at high speed without their momentum and kinetic energy ripping people apart or being able to survive impacts with objects moving so fast with only minor injuries. | Barry Allen | |
