Lucifer "Luci" Morningstar, also known as the Devil, is a fallen angel and a club owner in Los Angeles.

Early History
Originally, Lucifer was known as Samael, the Lightbringer, though he eventually became better known as Lucifer. He was the brightest and most powerful of all of God's angels. He was thought to be God's favorite. But when Lucifer rebelled, God cast him out of Heaven, tasking him to be the ruler of Hell and to punish the souls of deceased sinners for all eternity. Lucifer reluctantly ruled Hell for billions of years, gaining an incredibly fearsome reputation. He became known by many names, including the Devil, Satan, Old Scratch, Abaddon, Beelzebub, and Belial.

Throughout the years, Lucifer would occasionally visit Earth. Amenadiel would then always come to take him back to Hell. In "City of Angels?", Amenadiel admitted to Lucifer, "you've spent more time with humanity, you may understand them better than I do."

Living on Earth
In 2011, Lucifer decided to retire from ruling Hell and moved to Los Angeles. Needing the help of his demon soldier, friend and servant, Mazikeen, Lucifer tasked her with locating Amenadiel's lost necklace. Following the retrieval of the necklace, Lucifer cashed in the favor Amenadiel owed him to leave him and Mazikeen alone on Earth. To ensure he could not be tempted to return to Hell, Lucifer had Mazikeen cut off his angel wings, signifying him leaving his old life behind. Lucifer then opened the nightclub Lux with Maze's assistance.

Some years later, Lucifer became aware of The Crisis threatening the multiverse; antimatter was wiping out all universes, which would include Earth-666. John Constantine arrived at Lux with Mia Smoak and John Diggle, where they cashed in on the favor Lucifer owed John. Lucifer gave them a card to access purgatory, as the pillars of magic had becone too weak for Constantine to use his own powers. Uncaring of the impending antimatter (possibly because he would be unaffected), Lucifer returned to his usual night activities, his favor repaid.

By 2016, Lucifer had settled into a hedonistic lifestyle in Los Angeles revolving around running Lux and making Faustian deals with various people in various industries in exchange for favors. But then one night he witnessed the murder of a close acquaintance. Lacking faith in the L.A.P.D., Lucifer inserted himself into the investigation, working with homicide detective Chloe Decker. After the case is solved, Lucifer decided to continue working with Chloe as an LAPD civilian consultant.

"The multiverse has a way of aligning fates...It's written in the stars and in this book, or I wouldn't know that on this Earth, Clark Kent is Superman. Where I come from, that would be ridiculous. He can't see past his glasses."

Lex Luthor[src]

Behind the scenes

  • Tom Ellis confirmed in an interview that Lucifer's appearance in Crisis on Infinite Earths happened during the 5-year gap in between Lucifer coming to Earth and when the Lucifer series begin.[2]
  • The card with an illustration of the Devil playing the piano is a reference to Lucifer's expertise as a pianist.
  • In the DC Comics, although the senior member of the Satanic Triumvirate, the First of the Fallen, a.k.a. Satan, is sometimes confused with Lucifer, who is, on the other hand, the fourth of the fallen.
  • It is unclear whether Earth-666 and Earth-1 have separate Hells or if the Triumvirate came to power after Lucifer abdicated, as in the comics.
    • However, the show Lucifer explicitly states that there's only one Devil of Earth-666. Besides which, the Hell featured is a dark and ash-filled endless maze of doors with the damned locked behind them. (As opposed to the city seen in the Arrowverse.)
