The Luthor family is a wealthy, prominent, yet controversial family residing in National City. They were formerly residents of Metropolis.

Earth-38

"The Luthors are smart and dangerous. You don't want to go up against them."
Lillian Luthor[src]

In the 1980s, Lionel Luthor met and fell in love with Lillian in Metropolis, they got married and had a son named Lex.[1]

In the 1990s, Lionel Luthor had an affair with Elizabeth Walsh and fathered a daughter with her, Lena.[2]

In 1997, when Elizabeth died, Lionel took Lena to live with his family.[2]

Years later, Lionel passed away from unknown causes.

Later, Lex became friends with Superman, but later became enemies.[2] Lex tried to prove that Superman was bad for society, no matter who gets hurt on the way. Lex was arrested and tried for his crimes.[3]

Lillian blamed Superman and all the aliens for what happened to her son, so she joined a terrorist organization called Cadmus, with the aim of exterminating all the aliens.[4]

In 2016, Lena moved to National City and renamed the family company to L-Corp,[5] as part of an on-going crusade to cleanse the Luthor name of its association with Lex, whose insanity made everyone distrust anyone who had the Luthor name.

Lillian betrayed by Lena and arrested

Lillian betrayed by Lena and arrested.

Lillian tried to frame Lena for her to join Cadmus, but failed. She also tried to use the Medusa virus on Earth but was betrayed by Lena and detained by the Supergirl and her team.[6]

In 2018, Lex escaped from prison and with the help of Lillian,[3] tried to frame the Supergirl for attacking the White House,[7] but also failed. Later, Lena decided to kill Lex but before he died, he revealed to her Supergirl's secret identity. The Monitor brought Lex back shortly afterwards.[8]

In late 2019, Lena resented Supergirl for hiding the truth, so she decided to take revenge.[9] She infiltrated the Fortress of Solitude and stole Myriad to "fix" people.[10] Later, she was found by the D.E.O. but blamed Hope (in Eve Teschmacher's body).[11]

During the Anti-Monitor Crisis, everyone in the multiverse except for the seven Paragons (which Lex joined by replacing Superman of Earth-96), were killed in an antimatter wave by the Anti-Monitor on December 10, 2019,[12] only to be restored a month later, after the Paragons and the Spectre created a new universe.[13]

New multiverse

Earth-Prime

"Well...the Luthors are a breed of their own."
Alex Danvers[src]

In the new multiverse, Lex invoked a promise from Mar Novu that Lena could retain her memories of Earth-38.[14]

The Luthor family retains a mansion in Metropolis.[15]

Never gaining a criminal record, Lex is a prominent and respected world-renown businessman with multiple awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize. Luthor Corp retains its name, as opposed to being L-Corp.[16]

Lillian would like for her children to be closer so she asks Lex to involve himself in Lena's projects, including Non Nocere.[15] Subsequently, Lena learns what Lex already knew, that it was a failure; however, when he reveals this, and his desire for the family to rule humanity, she begins to despise him.[17]

Lex gives the Leviathan bottle to Lillian

Lex gives the Leviathan bottle to Lillian.

Lillian and Lex work together against Leviathan, not only because they are their competition for controlling the world, but because they were aliens far deadlier than Kryptonians. They used Brainy to capture 3/5 of Leviathan's leadership in a Coluan storage bottle, which they need for their real plan. Meanwhile, Lena decides to team up with Supergirl against Lex.[18]

Lillian sold her shares of Luthor Corp to Lena, making her a major shareholder;[19] however, a few days later, Lex pressured Lena into giving him full control of the company.[20]

Earth-TUD25

Chrissy Beppo researched the Luthor family tree for Lois Lane to see if the man going by the name "Luthor" was somehow related to Lex; she learned that he was not.[21]
