"What does "Magna Hesperia" mean?"
"It means Caesar went on to conquer the known world and then the unknown world."
Ray Palmer and Nate Heywood[src]

Magna Hesperia was a country founded by Roman Empire in an aberration timeline due to Julius Caesar's acquisition of "Rise of Rome", a history book from the future.

History

In 49 BC, Julius Caesar picked a book of Nate Heywood's detailing the history of Rome. Studying the book, Caesar was able to analyze his mistakes, creating a historical aberration in which the Romans conquered the world and their empire never fell. Realizing this after returning to the Waverider, the Legends launched a mission to retrieve the book, though they had to work alongside the Time Bureau.[1]

Aberration timeline

In an alternate timeline, Caesar's efforts led to the creation of an empire that never fell and expanded beyond its historical borders. The Romans colonized what became known as America in the original timeline, creating a province named Hesperia Magna where the United States were supposed to be.[1]

Behind the scenes

  • Historically, Hesperia as "western land" is the ancient Greek name of Italy, also used in Latin epic poetry. The Iberian Peninsula and Northwest Africa, further to the west, were also named this in both Ancient Greek and Byzantine sources. Logically, the Greco-Roman world wound name the westernmost continent "Hesperia Magna" – the Great West.
