History[]
At some point Lex Luthor would create Luthorcorp, which would become the biggest tech company in the world he would set up it's headquarters in Metropolis constructing a tower in the shape of an L. He would also become the biggest and most feard crime lord in the city with some dubbing him "The Devil of Metropolis".
Tal-Rho would relocate to the city and, under the alias of Morgan Edge, establishing Edge EnerCorp.
In the early 2000s, Lois Lane began her career at the renowned Daily Planet as an investigative journalist, working under the editor-in-chief, Perry White.
Around the same time, Clark Kent would also move to the city. While apartment hunting, he heard a car with failed brakes about to careen off a bridge. He saved both the car and a little boy who was in its path, marking his debut as a superhero to the city and the world.[7]
During this period, a mysterious individual known as Henry Miller, concealed behind an iron mask, began defacing minority-owned businesses with Nazi symbols throughout the city. Lois Lane started to investigate these attacks, but her efforts were overshadowed by the buzz surrounding the arrival of a superpowered hero. It was then that she met her future husband, Clark Kent, who was partnered with her on his first day at the Daily Planet by Perry White. Together, they pursued the investigation, and eventually, Lois uncovered that Henry Miller was the perpetrator. She confronted him, and with the help of the new hero, thwarted his actions. After meeting the Kryptonian hero, she named him "Superman."
Meanwhile, the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo arrived in Metropolis seeking Superman, having been contracted to apprehend him. He succeeded in surprising the Man of Steel but was ultimately defeated by the hero, who then returned to the city.[8]
Lex Luthor was wrongfully accused of the murder of Intergang leader Antony Moxie by Peia and Bruno Mannheim, leading to a significant power shift in the Metropolis underworld. Consequently, his wife, Erica Alexandra Del Portenza, took over the management of LuthorCorp.[9]
Over the years, numerous supervillains have begun to operate in Metropolis, including Atomic Skull, Toyman, Hi-Tech, the New God Sleez, among others.[8]
On the first day of school for Jonathan and Jordan Kent, Clark Kent, who lost his job at the Daily Planet which had been bought by Morgan Edge, learned about the death of his mother.[6]
The Kent family moved from Metropolis to Smallville. A few days later, since Morgan Edge rewrote her article for the Daily Planet, Lois personally came to Metropolis to quit her job.[10]
At some point, Thaddeus Killgrave was imprisoned in Metropolis. He noticed that Superman wasn't around Metropolis as much due to his transfer to another prison. He escaped from the convoy transferring him and returned to Metropolis to attack Superman. There, he was defeated by him and apprehended by the army.[11]
After Eliza dumped him, Jonathan wanted to return to Metropolis because he felt that he lost everything when he moved.[12]
The Smallville Crows came here to play football and won. Later, Jordan broke Jonathan's hand while trying to punch Jimmy Cutter.[13]
John Henry Irons, after his release from the Department of Defense, journeyed to Metropolis in hopes of reconnecting with the doppelganger of his younger sister, Darlene Irons.[14]
Morgan Edge, now revealed as the Kryptonian Tal-Rho, along with Leslie Larr, launched an assault on the city. When Superman and John Henry Irons confronted them at Centennial Park, they discovered that Tal-Rho, having absorbed the power of the Eradicator, had transferred the consciousness of several Kryptonians into the bodies of Metropolis civilians, commanding them to wreak havoc. Superman battled the Kryptonians while John Henry Irons took on Larr. Lois reported the chaos live on TV, narrowly escaping death at Larr's hands, saved by Irons. Ultimately, Larr and the Kryptonians were subdued, but Tal-Rho managed to flee..[15]

Red skies loom over Metropolis.
In 2022, red skies loomed over Metropolis as Ally Allston began to merge Earth and the Inverse World.[16]
Twenty-seven days after Allston's defeat, Henry Miller, also known as the Atom Man, who had been released from jail three months prior, attacked downtown Metropolis, wreaking havoc and causing extensive damage. Superman confronted him. They clashed in the city's skies, with Superman trying to move the battle to a less populated area. Eventually, they descended into Hob's Bay, where Miller was killed by a masked and hooded figure. This assailant also caused Superman to hear sounds of distress throughout the city, forcing the Kryptonian to respond. During this distraction, the figure managed to escape with Miller's body.[17]
A week later, Lois and Clark planned to travel to the city to interview Judge Tara Reagan regarding Miller's release. However, before they could, they were intercepted by men working for Bruno Mannheim, the leader of Intergang. Clark, as Superman, pursued Mannheim's men and confronted him about Henry Miller's release. Simultaneously, Lois prevented Reagan from attempting suicide out of fear of Mannheim's retribution. It was during this crisis that Lois disclosed her diagnosis with stage three inflammatory breast cancer.[18]
Jordan and Jonathan along with Natalie Lane Irons and Sarah Cortez would attend a house party in Metropolis where Natalie would meet a boy named Matteo.[18]
Lois began receiving chemotherapy in Hob's Bay Medical Center, where she met and befriended Peia Mannheim.[19]
John Henry made contact with the version of his sister from this world. Subsequently, he was taken to meet Manheim, who attempted to threaten him into staying out of his affairs. Manheim then disclosed that he had kidnapped Darling, compelling John to rescue her.[20]
Natalie was set to attend a dinner date in Metropolis with Matteo, who planned to introduce her to his parents, Bruno and Peia Manheim, although she was oblivious to their true identities. The dinner was disrupted by her father, who had discovered the identity of Matteo's parents. During the ensuing confrontation, Superman stepped in to rescue John Henry. Meanwhile, Peia, debilitated by her cancer, collapsed from overexerting her powers, prompting Superman to rush her to the hospital. Subsequently, Manheim instructed John to depart with Natalie.[21]
After her escape from the DOD, Peia, whose powers had been amplified by the cure Bruno provided, began creating sounds of attacks across the city. This forced Superman and the emergency services to respond, interrupting their search for the Manheims.[22]
However, Peia's powers began to destabilize, forcing her to flee from her and Bruno's hideout to the streets of Metropolis, where she inadvertently began causing chaos. Superman eventually found Peia and received a warning from Sam Lane that she needed to be stopped swiftly or she would destroy an entire city block. Superman managed to calm her, assuring her that her family would be safe and that it was alright for her to release her energy. Consequently, she allowed Superman to carry her above the city, where she could safely unleash her remaining power. Afterward, Superman respectfully returned her body to her family.
Matteo Mannheim would start attending an academy operated by the DOD in Metropolis.
After seventeen years, Lex Luthor was released from prison following Lois's revelation that Peia was the actual killer of Antony Moxie. Reporters and news crews swarmed around Luthor Corp, oblivious to the fact that Lex had postponed the announcement of his release by several hours and had instead traveled to Smallville.[23]
Thirty-two days following Luthor's release, Judge Reagan was found murdered, her body left near the Daily Planet building as a warning to both Lois and Superman.
Sam Lane would offer John Henry Irons a job in Metropolis.
Later that night, Superman would confront the Kal-El of the Inverse World, who had transformed into a monstrous version of himself. Although the fight began in Smallville, it would eventually spill into Metropolis, starting with a clash in the bay where Superman encased the monster in ice with his freeze breath. Hovering above the city, as bystanders watched, Superman saw his adversary was about to break free and hurled him, resulting in the creature being impaled on the spike atop the Daily Star building.
Believing the battle was over, Superman descended to reassure the citizens below, telling them all was well. However, to his shock and surprise, he heard his opponent's heartbeat and saw him floating above the spike he had been impaled on. The two Kryptonians charged at each other, with Superman being tackled into the underground subway system. The monster proceeded to savagely beat Superman, causing extensive destruction in the process.
Despite Superman's valiant efforts to retaliate, the monstrous Bizarro, now stronger and more enraged than ever, beat the hero into unconsciousness. He then flew into space, taking the body of the Man of Steel with him, leaving the horrified citizens of Metropolis to gaze upward, unaware of the fate of their city's most beloved hero.[24]

Behind the scenes[]
- In the DC comics, Metropolis is the home of the hero known as Superman. Metropolis is located in the Northeastern United States, in close proximity to Gotham City, with the majority of DC comics references placing Metropolis specifically in Delaware.
- Superman co-creator Joe Shuster modeled Metropolis' cityscape on that of his hometown, Toronto, Ontario, which is known to be the most populous city in Canada.[25]
- For the Arrowverse, this version of Metropolis and most versions of Gotham are portrayed in Chicago, sometimes, their "close proximity" being similar background locations.
- In real life, Metropolis, Illinois, has been proclaimed the "hometown of Superman" by the Illinois State Legislature, and the town celebrates its "local hero" with a large Superman statue in the city, a Superman museum, an annual Superman festival, and its local newspaper, The Metropolis Planet, being named after The Daily Planet.[26] A version of the town has appeared in Adventures of Superman #515, as a city whose citizens idolize the hero who lives in their 'sister' city.
