General Non is a Kryptonian criminal, warlord, former military lieutenant, and inmate of Fort Rozz. He was the widower of the late Astra and the second-in-command of their army, though after her death he seems to have taken over her role as commander, becoming Supergirl's enemy. Upon nearly succeeding in eliminating all humans on Earth, Non was blinded by Supergirl.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Non was born on the planet Krypton, where he become a military lieutenant and fell in love with his commanding officer, Astra, who later become his wife,[1] although he was not always faithful to her, secretly having an affair with Indigo.[2] Also, he apparently never really got along with his wife's family.[3]
Rebellion and imprisonment[]
After she learned that Krypton was dying because of its resources being too heavily exploited, Astra tried to prevent it and, when she couldn't gain support from the government, both she and Non took matters into their own hands committing several extreme crimes.
During one of their actions Non killed a guard, prompting Alura Zor-El to lure them out of hiding with a trick, arrest them for their crimes[1] and sentencing them both to imprisonment in Fort Rozz.[4]
Escape to Earth[]
After Fort Rozz crashed in a field on Earth, releasing all of the prisoners. Astra and Non established an army in the hopes of seeking revenge on Alura.[5]
While the D.E.O. and Supergirl are occupied with battling and capturing Astra, Non and his men attacked Lord Technologies, and he was about to kill Alex Danvers before Kara arrived to fight him.[1]
However Non proved to be the superior in terms of physical power and began strangling her, "Hank Henshaw" tried to intervene in the fight but was abducted by Non. Later Non killed a mind-reading alien who found "Hank" impervious to his abilities. Non agreed to exchange the D.E.O.'s director for Astra, but after the trade is made, he sprung an ambush; however, Astra called off the attack, demanding that a reluctant Non honor the agreement, though it is not a truce, then Astra and Non leaves with their soldiers.[3]
Death of Astra[]
As the Kryptonians prepared for the next phase of their mission - "Myriad", Non revealed to Astra that he had incapacitated Kara with "Black Mercy", thus technically did not disobey Astra's order for her to be unharmed, but she was displeased regardless.
Non and Astra briefed their soldiers, armed with anti-Kryptonite suits, about their campaign they fought for on Krypton, now to be completed on Earth. After they left, Non questions Astra's whereabouts prior and her dedication to their war, Astra tensely affirmed it, so he apologized and left. The Kryptonians attacked the D.E.O. satellites and connect them to their device, Non is confronted by Kara, who furiously pummeled him screaming about how he took her world away from her and thought he could do the same to Earth; strangely, Non barely fights back but still managed to activate his device.
Kara and Non continued to fight and Non claimed Myriad will "cure" Earth of humanity, he sabotaged the satellite dish and escaped while Kara caught it. Non eventually grew tired of the battle and blew Kara away with his heat vision. As he came back to their base, Non discovered that Astra was killed in battle by Alex using a Kryptonite blade, and a soldier informed him that the Myriad is operational and she did not die in vain.[6]
Astra's funeral[]
The following day Non came to Kara's apartment to ask her to come with him on behalf of Astra, which she agreed despite Alex's protests. Up in the sky, the funeral for Astra was held; then Non told Kara he would hold a period for mourning, and vowed to kill her after it was over.[7]
Indigo[]
Non met with Indigo but he wasn't in the mood to flirt with her as he still grieving over Astra's death. Indigo told Non that Astra's notion of living alongside the humans can't work, and vows to change that so she and the Kryptonians can be only ones left on Earth. After Indigo was destroyed by Supergirl, Non, using the Omegahedron, places it on a computer and a new version of Indigo begins to materialize, but in pieces, with Non saying that he wants her to do things his way.[2]
Myriad[]
Non finally executed his plan on Earth, beginning with National City. He sent out a signal from the Myriad program that took over the minds of all residents,[8] minus Kara, Maxwell Lord and Cat Grant. He intended to expand his domain to other cities, intending to enslave the entire population and make them all work as one. Superman flies to National City after hearing Supergirl's distress call, only to fall victim to the mind control. When Indigo captures Alex Danvers, he uses her to fight Supergirl as revenge for Astra.[9] However, J'onn J'onzz brings Eliza Danvers in time to talk Alex out of it and simultaneously breaks her free from the enslavement.[10]
A dead world[]
Supergirl broadcasts a speech throughout the city that helps the residents break free, effectively ending Non's brief domain. With prompting from Indigo, Non decides to utilize the Myriad wave to destroy mankind, instead. After discovering Non's plan, Supergirl and J'onn fly to Fort Rozz where they fight Non and Indigo. Non seems to gain the upper hand before Supergirl overpowers his heat vision, blinding him.[10]
Personality[]
Non is extremely stubborn, rude and vindictive, even for his family, although he did care about Astra and was saddened by her death and determined to carry on for her memory. He also cares about the welfare of the planet, as he wants to rule it and thinks the planet is being destroyed by humanity.
Like most Kryptonians, Non is extremely arrogant, prideful, self-righteous and hypocritical; as he always tries to blame others for the problems he caused. He also firmly believes that enslaving the human race is the only solution to save the Earth, and because of this he does not have a good relationship with his niece Kara due to the fact that she is allied with the humans.
Non is also quite immoral as he had no qualms about enslaving the minds of the human race. He is also not afraid to go behind the back of his superior, although she was his wife, as Astra ordered that Kara was not to be hurt, but he used Black Mercy on Supergirl, to try to prevent her from interfering with his plans. He had no guilt or remorse for this, showing he was willing to do whatever was necessary to complete his goal, regardless of who he hurt.
Powers and abilities[]
Powers[]
- Kryptonian physiology: Normally, like all Kryptonians, Non's capabilities are no greater than a normal human of his physical conditioning. However, once charged by the energy spectrum of a yellow sun, he can perform various superhuman feats. While generic for his race, being a highly trained military have allowed him to use these abilities with greater strength and control compared to other Kryptonians.
- Solar energy absorption: Non's cellular structure allows him to absorb, store and metabolize the wavelength of yellow sun radiation to fuel all of his abilities. Direct exposure to sunlight will also accelerate his healing from any injuries he might sustain.
- Super strength: Non's possesses tremendous physical strength, enough too easily kill a normal human if he were to attack them directly. His strength also allowed him to overpower and almost kill his niece in their first fight (choking her and lifting her off the ground) and even to snap a mind-reading alien's neck with ease using only one hand.
- Super leaping: Non is able to jump several stories in a single bound without having to fly, though he rarely does so.
- Super speed: Non possesses the ability to move at super-sonic speeds, both through flight and on foot.
- Invulnerability: Non possesses tremendous physical durability, making him essentially immune to all Earthly weapons, with bullets simply ricocheting whenever they come in to contact with his skin. This allows him to take far more damage than a normal human and have a higher resistance to pain.
- Flight: Non is able to manipulate his own gravitational field to generate thrust and propel himself through the air, often at supersonic speeds, much faster than he can travel by foot. As such, he is able to levitate and fly past Earth's atmosphere and near the planet's orbit.
- Heat vision: Non can emit blue energy beams of intense heat from his eyes. Due to his control over the beams, he has demonstrated being capable of burning though stone and welding metal, causing small explosions and fires, and physically repelling enemies with similar durability, making it useful in combat. This is the ability Non uses the most, and he demonstrated his heat vision is far more powerful than most of his fellow Kryptonians,[6][10] though the intensity of heat vision can even be enough to burn and damage his eyes.[10]
- X-ray vision: Non is able to see through all solid objects, except for lead.
- Super breath: Non is able to exhale powerful gusts of air from his mouth which are similar to force winds. He can also cause the temperature of his breath to drop, therefore able to freeze nearly anything.
- Super hearing: Non has super-sensitive ears that can perfectly pick up sounds from miles away and even through structures.
- Telepathy immunity: Non is immune to most forms of telepathic powers, even from someone as powerful as J'onn J'onzz.
- Accelerated healing factor: Non's solar charged metabolism accelerates his healing and allows him to burn calories at a fast rate, making him resilient to weight gain.
- Contaminant immunity: Non has an immunity to all forms of disease and contaminants on Earth.
- Longevity: As a Kryptonian, Non's life span is considerably longer than a normal human and likewise ages much slower. In the twelve years he spent on Earth, he didn't show any physical change.
- Solar energy absorption: Non's cellular structure allows him to absorb, store and metabolize the wavelength of yellow sun radiation to fuel all of his abilities. Direct exposure to sunlight will also accelerate his healing from any injuries he might sustain.
Abilities[]
- Expert hand-to-hand combatant: As a former Kryptonian lieutenant, Non is an expert in unarmed combat, easily beating his inexperienced niece, Kara Zor-El in their first confrontation.
- Expert tactician: As a former Kryptonian lieutenant, Non is an expert tactician.
- Multilingual: Non is capable of fluently speaking English and Kryptonese.
Weaknesses[]
- Kryptonite: Like all Kryptonians, even while empowered, Non is vulnerable to the exposure of Kryptonite, a radioactive mineral from his home planet Krypton. Depending on the nature of the said Kryptonite, it will cause a different adverse affect on him;
- Green Kryptonite: Green Kryptonite not only physically hurts Non and weakens his physical attributes, leaving him vulnerable to weapons and anything in general that can kill a normal human, but if he is exposed to it for too long, it will kill him.
- Red Kryptonite: If exposed to Red Kryptonite, it gradually destroys Non's inhibitions and turns him into a corrupt version of himself. Left without morality, compassion, rationality, or any cares whatsoever, Non will become malevolent and prone to hostility and aggression, making him a danger to everyone around him.
- Silver Kryptonite: If exposed to Silver Kryptonite, it will cause Non to go in a deep and frightful hallucination where nothing from the outside world can stir him out of it until it leaves his system.
- Extreme energy: Extreme amounts of energy can be enough to damage or kill Non.
- Red sun energy: Like all Kryptonians, exposure to the Red Sun will make Non the equivalent of a human being on Earth.
- Solar energy depletion: When deprived of Yellow sunlight to empower him, Non's abilities would slowly begin to fade, thus requiring Non to recharge.
- Solar energy overload: If Non absorbs too much solar energy, it will act as a poison and kill him.
- Lead: Due to the fact that; Non's x-ray vision is similar to that; of actual x-rays; he cannot see through lead.
- Magic: Like all Kryptonians and humans, Non can be affected by supernatural forces or powers. This is because his powers are due to his natural physiology and not from the supernatural.
- High-frequencies: Though considered a strength, Non's hearing does have its disadvantages. Since his hearing is more sensitive than a normal human's, higher pitch noises (sonic screams, etc.) can disorient him and cause pain in his ears, leaving him vulnerable in a fight.
- Sound-dampening technology: The D.E.O. designed frequencies to block super-hearing and cause Non slight pain when trying to use it in areas protected by the technology.

Behind the scenes[]
- In the DC comics and its adaptations, Non usually appears as the lobotomized disciple of General Zod.
- Non served as one of the main antagonists of Season 1 of Supergirl, alongside with his wife Astra.
- Along with Astra, Non is also original character who didn't originate from the comics (Non originally appeared in two Superman movies from 1978 and 1980, portrayed by Jack O'Halloran; the character was later adapted in comics in 2007). This makes him the first male Arrowverse main antagonist to be an original character as well.
