"We shouldn't travel together. Malcolm might get worried. He already knows I have my doubts. Besides, I'm getting the urge to take out the Queen's Gambit for another voyage."
Robert Queen to Frank Chen[src]

The Queen's Gambit, also referred to as simply the Gambit, was a yacht originally owned by Robert Queen. It sank during a heavy storm at sea in 2007 due to being sabotaged by Malcolm Merlyn.

The Queen's Gambit's remains had been located under the sea 2,100 miles east of Sydney, Australia, at the coordinates 23°15.5'S 174°43.6'W, 15,433 feet below the surface.[1]

History

Robert Queen decided to take the Queen's Gambit to China in his attempt to prevent the Undertaking. When Malcolm Merlyn learned of this from Frank Chen, he sabotaged the ship using C2 explosives. Malcolm knew that the Queen's Gambit would be heading into a storm and used the weather as a cover to hide the true cause of the yacht's fate.[2] Robert's illegitimate child, Emiko Adachi, was aware, that Queen's Gambit had been sabotaged, and had the opportunity to warn Robert. However, due to the hatred she had towards him, she chose not to, letting Robert get what's coming to him.[3]

The Gambit was secretly salvaged in 2009 by Moira Queen, who discovered that it was sabotaged.[1] She hid the remains in a warehouse using $2.6 million taken from Queen Consolidated, under the name "Tempest". Walter Steele, whilst investigating the money transaction, later found out where the Gambit was hidden and put in storage.[4] Malcolm later ordered the remains to be destroyed.

Behind the scenes

  • In the episode "Pilot", Tommy Merlyn mentions that (by his rough estimate) Oliver hasn't had sex in 1,839 days since he went missing. 1,839 days is equal to 5 years, 1 week, and 6 days. Since most Arrow episodes take place in real time, we can assume this episode takes place on October 10, 2012 (the day it aired), which means the Gambit probably sank on or around September 27, 2007.
