Samantha "Sam" Arias (born 1979) is a Kryptonian world killer known as Reign, who was sent to Earth prior to Krypton's destruction and found by Patricia Arias, who raised her as her daughter. As an adult, she briefly became the acting CEO of L-Corp, before transitioning to a position as the CFO though she still partly holds the former position on the behalf of her employer Lena Luthor. Sam is the single mother of Ruby Arias. She remained unaware of her origins until her powers started to manifest, leading to the emergence of one of the strongest adversaries whom Kara Danvers ever had to face as Supergirl.
After Purity and Pestilence awoke, Reign noted that her human self Sam was much stronger than she thought. Instead of continuing their fight for control, Reign offered Sam strength to protect Ruby; with that, Reign was reborn with the perfect fusion of Sam's emotions and Reign's programming.
Biography
Early life
Sam as a baby sent off to Earth.
According to a Kryptonian hologram, she is the culmination of years of Kryptonian research. The same hologram appeared as an apparition and stated that she was born from Rao's fire. On the day of Krypton's destruction in 1979, as a baby, a group of hooded figures placed her in a Kryptonian escape pod and sent her to Earth, saying that she would grow strong there and that she would then reign.[1] According to Thomas Coville, the world killer Reign's legend/prophecy existed long before the book of Rao.
When her pod landed on Earth, Patricia Arias found her, took her in and raised her as her daughter.[2] Patricia took her swimming on Mondays and Wednesdays.[3] At some point prior to turning 18, Samantha was kicked out of the house by her adoptive mother for being pregnant. Her pregnancy also delayed her manifestation as the world killer, "Reign"[2], and upon the delivery, Sam was awed by the new life she brought from within herself and into the world that Sam then vowed she would always be there for her newborn child - no matter the odds.[4] Experiencing ups and downs after having her daughter, Ruby, and subsequently raising her without a father to support them as a family, despite this, Sam pulled through by herself as a single mother from one job and city to the next to ensure that she and Ruby would have a future together. Sam would later be acquainted with Lena Luthor, who finds her working so early and practically alone in the office of Sam's company, in which she served as Junior VP and was just taken over as part of a merger with LuthorCorp, that Lena came as representative to, for the assimilation together of both their respective companies. From then, Sam caught Lena's attention at once with the former's unshakeable resolve and dedication to her occupation leading to an exclusively professional but well-intentioned working relationship between the two of them since the latter would not regard Sam on the level of a legitimate friend, together with Kara, until much later on when the three of them acquaint themselves together.
The unveiling and working at L-Corp
Sam's powers begin to awaken.
Samantha attended the Supergirl statue unveiling by Lena Luthor with her daughter, Ruby. She encountered Alex Danvers there when Ruby ran into her and Samantha made Ruby apologize for it. During the attack at the unveiling, a metal bar fell on Ruby. Samantha, frantic and desperate to save her daughter, lifted the intensely heavy beam, much to her surprise. She later went to bed, but woke up disturbed and sweating after inadvertently having a nightmare of Alura Zor-El turning into a hideous monster.[5]

Sam drove Ruby to school the next day, and while they waited in the car, Ruby questioned her about what happened at the unveiling. Ruby believed that her mother had superpowers, but Samantha explained to Ruby that it was nothing more than an adrenaline rush, caused by seeing her daughter in danger and that it happened to a lot of mothers. Ruby didn't believe her and continued to insist that Samantha had superpowers.
Later that day, moments before entering a meeting, Sam was called by the principal of Ruby's school and was informed that Ruby had been in a fight. When enquired, Ruby informed her mother that she got into the fight because a girl in her school called her a liar for saying that her mother had superpowers. Samantha tried to convince Ruby again that she didn't have powers, which caused her to yell, and Ruby to run off. Sometime following, Samantha was seen talking to someone about business, on the phone, and thanking that person for their patience, right before she received delivery pizza and took it to Ruby's room, only to find her gone.

She messaged Ruby and asked her where she was, and Ruby told her mom her location. Samantha ran out and found Ruby in the midst of an attack by Psi, and moments before they were crushed by a wrecking ball, Supergirl saved them. Meeting and exchanging words with Alex again, who left soon afterwards so she could be at the side of her fiancée, Samantha talked to Ruby after the attack while the two of them were in the ambulance, with the latter inquiring if her mom supposes that Supergirl has a job as a normal person and outside of heroism, and realized that Ruby wanted her to have superpowers so that she wouldn't have to work, and could just save people and spend time with her. Samantha then assured her daughter that she would always spend time with her, no matter what.

Later, she appeared at CatCo, to meet up with Lena, where she met Kara Danvers, unknowingly (and very ironically) meeting Supergirl herself in her civilian persona at that very workplace where the two of them shared the same boss, Lena herself, who reveals to Kara that she hired and assigned Sam at L-Corp to be the acting CEO there while Lena Luthor adjusted to her new business in editorial. Sam thanks her employer for understanding her domestic plight. And before Lena, the two Kryptonians (each completely ignorant of the other’s true alien nature) shook hands in welcoming gesture, completely unaware that this friendship forged between the three of them at that point, would then be one fraught with many extraordinary and unexpected challenges worth remembering, from within as well as beyond. At home, Samantha had trouble sleeping and, while searching for light-bulbs at her house’s garage area, found a crowbar. She remembered what her daughter had said and tried to bend it, but failed in doing so. Dismissing the thought, she then went to bed that night.[6]
Samantha attended one of Ruby's soccer games and proudly cheered her daughter on from the sidelines. She took a call during the game and stated that if JQB has a problem with the deal she was trying to set up they can contact her directly. As she was talking, Ruby scored a goal and asked her mom if she saw it, and Sam covered by shouting that she did and that Ruby did a great job. A woman walked up to her and asked which child was Sam's, and Sam pointed her daughter out and jokingly stated that she wasn't sure how Ruby was so coordinated since she herself isn't. She asked the woman which child was hers, but the woman reflected and stated that Ruby was special and was chosen - they both were, and handed her a flyer for a meeting. Sam asked for the lady's name, and the woman stated that she was a follower and asked her to bring Ruby to the community. Sam forced a smile and thanked the woman who walked away.
Lena and Kara arrived at L-Corp moments before Sam walked in, telling the former two of Ruby’s soccer game, and then taking the kids for ice cream thereafter — hence Samantha’s late arrival. She then told Lena that the JQB merger should be finalized any minute and handed the papers to Lena, who signed them. Lena asked how she was planning to celebrate her first big merger as CFO, and Sam just chuckled. Kara invited Sam to her girls 'night, and she initially declined but after being pressed a little more by both Lena and Kara, she agreed to attend. She asked what to bring and Lena told her to bring booze - but not tequila. Kara found the flyer the woman from Ruby's soccer game gave her and asked her about it, and Sam told Kara what had happened and lets Kara take the flyer on the latter’s request.
That night at girls' night, Sam met Alex and Maggie and drank some wine. She asked Kara about her relationship status, and was saddened to hear that Kara's boyfriend had "moved away". Alex asked Samantha if Ruby's father was still in the picture, and Samantha quickly stated that it was just her and Ruby. Alex was impressed with Sam's ability to raise a daughter on her own and asked how that was possible. Sam thought for a moment and stated that it wasn't always done gracefully, she was normally always behind on something and that Alex and Maggie would see when they have kids. Alex informed her that they weren't going to have children and were just going to be the cool aunts, and Samantha stated that it was great and Ruby would love that. She then apologized for assuming but was quickly assured by both Alex and Maggie that it was fine. Kara then chimed in and told Sam to put her down as another cool Aunt, and Alex told her to put Lena down as a slightly nerdier Aunt, which made Samantha really happy.

The next day at L-Corp, Ruby was doing her homework on the floor and asked her mom to help her with her song. Samantha asked about Ruby's French project and was surprised to learn that her daughter had finished all of her homework and she apologized for being so busy. A man entered the room and informed Samantha of a problem with the merger, and Samantha started to deal with it much to her daughter's disappointment.
Later that night she entered her office to find Ruby asleep on the couch, and placed her own jacket over her daughter. Lena entered and the two discussed the merger, and Samantha told her that the merger was finalized, and Lena congratulated her on it. Sam smiled lightly before she started to cry and apologized for being unprofessional. She then confided to Lena about her screwing up with Ruby and the fact that all Ruby wanted to do was practice her song, but she was too busy with work to help her, and that she felt like the worst mother. Lena told her that she had the worst mother and that Sam was doing just fine by a mile from how Lillian did with Lena, but Sam responded that her daughter fell asleep on her couch at work and that wasn't great. Lena kindly told her that Ruby fell asleep watching her mom work hard and knowing that it was only Sam who could be relied upon with that ability to meet L-Corp's corporate expectations (which will then serve them all well in the long run), and that was how you raise a girl to be a badass — by letting her understand the world at her own pace; and at the same time, always being there to make sure that her daughter makes the right choices in terms of decisions and perspective. Sam smiled and mentioned that Ruby already was a badass, and Lena agreed and told her that it was because she was loved and knows it. Sam only appreciatively smiled further in response.
At Ruby's play that night, Sam was surprised to see that Lena, Kara, and Alex actually came to support her daughter. She was also happy to hear that they were ready to be the cool Aunts. Sam then proudly watched her daughter sing her solo beautifully, and took pictures as she performed.
At the end of that night, Sam ran a bath and took some medicine. When she looked in the mirror, she was horrified to see herself covered in strange symbols. She heard whispering behind her and turned around and was terrified to see a woman in a cloak standing behind her. The woman stated that she was born from Rao's fire, and Sam cowered on the bathroom floor in fear. Ruby entered the bathroom and worriedly asked her mother what was wrong, and Sam check her hands and noticed that the symbols were gone.[7]
Samantha dropped Ruby off at school the next day, and Ruby asked her mother about what had happened the night before when Sam was cowering in fear in the bathroom. Sam stated that it was just a bad dream, but Ruby, confused, retorted that she was awake. Sam then told her that it was a migraine and that it was time for school. They hugged goodbye before Ruby climbed out. As Sam was preparing to pull away, a friend Ruby was talking to collapsed on the ground and started shaking. Ruby shouted to her mother, who quickly ran over to help.
Later, at Luthor Family Children Hospital, Samantha was seen hugging a woman (presumably the mother of the collapsed boy) and looked worriedly after the woman. Moments later, Lena and Kara arrived and asked why she was there. Sam told them what had happened, and that the boy was diagnosed with lead poisoning. She also remarks that Morgan Edge's stunt was awful, and the whole situation is bad. She then watched from a distance as Lena and Kara confronted Morgan Edge.
She then joined Lena and Kara at CatCo to discuss the issue and whether or not Lena's lead bomb could have been responsible for the children getting sick. She told Lena that there could be hundreds of other reasons that the children were getting sick, and backed Kara's statement of Morgan Edge by saying that he is ruthless. Lena wasn't convinced and Sam responded by saying that the device saved everyone in the city, including herself. James joined the room and recommended that Lena step down from CatCo, which Lena agreed to, and went further to say that she was stepping down from L-Corp as well. Sam disagreed and told her that they need Lena to help with the research, but Lena assured her that the company could handle it and that she didn't want to be accused of tampering with the research. When an angry parent arrived at CatCo and confronted Lena, Sam was seen behind Lena and was horrified to hear the man’s story.
At a press conference later that day, Sam stood off to the side of Lena and showed her support for her friend. A shooter open fired at Lena, which caused panic throughout the crowd and Sam jumped out of the way and laid on the ground until the shooter was apprehended.
After the conference, Lena stayed at Sam's house and expressed that she didn't want to put Sam and Ruby in danger. Sam told her that it was fine and that the woman was in custody, Ruby was at a friend’s house and went on to tell Lena to take her Louis Vuitton's off and drink some water since she was probably dehydrated. Lena pressed that Sam could have been shot and she shouldn't be hiding her, but Sam assured her that it was fine. She stated that Lena gave her a break when she needed one the most and that she wanted to return the favor. Ruby walked out with pillows and blankets, and Lena agreed to spend one night at the house, which made Sam smile and say that this is what friends are for. Lena asked that if Ruby was sick if Sam would still be her friend, and Sam simply looked up at her not speaking.
That night, Sam returned home from a late night at work to find Lena passed out on the couch and Kara still at the house, having arrived there earlier to check up on how Lena was doing. She thanked Kara for staying and that even though she's known Lena for a long time, she had never seen her like that. Kara responded by saying that Lena wanted everyone to think she was tough, and Sam agreed and finished Kara's thought by saying that Lena was "all mush" inside. Offhandedly veering the subject to the restless nights that they have both been having and sensing kinship within one another (oh, they have no idea...) the two women then banded together to try and figure out if there was a pattern, but all the kids infected were scattered and that there wasn't a pattern. Sam decided to follow a lead on finances between the kids, and had all the finances for the parents pulled up from her laptop in a matter of minutes, making Kara see as to why Lena thinks so highly of Samantha. The two noticed that everyone went to a food truck located at the park for Oktoberfest on the same day, and thought that it could be something in the food.
They then went to the park but all the trucks were gone. That leads them to a building in the park that the kids may have gone into. Hoping that whatever afflicted the children was something indoors, Samantha suggests that she and Kara check the building’s interior. However, when Sam tried the door she found that it was locked. When she wasn't looking, Kara broke into the door and covered it up by saying it was just a sticky hinge. They entered the building to reveal public pools and Kara remarked that Eliza used to bring her somewhere similar, and Sam asked who Eliza was. When Kara responded that Eliza was her adoptive mom every Tuesday and Thursday, and Sam was surprised to learn that and stated that she was adopted as well. However, her place was Monday's and Wednesday's. As they walked past the pool Sam remarked that Ruby loved swimming and so does every kid. When Kara x-rayed the pool, she noticed that something odd was in it. She tested it with a liquid-sampling device and electronically sent it to Winn for analysis, and Sam commented that Winn must be a good friend to have, believing him to just be a friend of Kara's at the FBI. Both were surprised and relieved to hear that Lena wasn't responsible, but were horrified to learn that someone probably and deliberately put a dangerous compound in the pool that mimicked the symptoms of lead poisoning, after finding several barrels of the said compound being kept at the pools’ storage cabinet.
After Supergirl saved Lena, the three girls returned to Sam's house where they drank wine and talked about the day. Sam relayed the message that the synthetic antidote that L-Corp made was working and all the kids were getting better. Lena thanked both the girls for their steadfast help and dedication, and Sam agreed and stated that she and Kara made a pretty good team. Kara smiled and stated that it was more than pretty good, and the two clinked their glasses. Lena stated that she never had anyone who loved her despite her flaws before, and Kara remarked that was because she never had a sister before and now she has, wrapping her arm around Lena. Sam smiled and stated, that Lena has two sisters now, and joined the group hug which caused everyone to laugh and smile happily.
Later that night, after both Lena and Kara had left, Sam tucked Ruby into bed and assured her that the boy who was sick was going to be fine. Ruby stated that she liked her mom's friends which made Sam happy, and she stated she liked them to, but she liked Ruby better. She gave her daughter a kiss on the forehead, and Ruby remarked that there was a hole in her mom's shirt. Sam found it weird and said goodnight to her daughter before leaving the room. She went to the kitchen and shook out her jacket. A crushed bullet fell out, and to Sam's shock, she realized that she had indeed been shot and checked her side. However, she wasn't wounded and the bullet had been crushed after hitting her.[3]
Discovering her true identity
Samantha was at her kitchen preparing a meal for Ruby and herself, and immersed in the doubt of whether she had powers or not. In order to test her suspicion, she puts her hand in the boiling water without Ruby noticing and saw that nothing happened to her hand, not even feeling or wincing from the temperature difference. Surprised, she told Ruby that she had to go back to work and that Ruby would go to Tess' for dinner. Ruby tried to protest, but Sam snapped at her, saying it wasn't up for debate.
She then drove out to her adoptive mother, Patricia Arias' house for information. She knocked on the door and Patricia welcomed her in. She brought tea for Sam, and asked how Sam's child was doing. However, she floundered as she didn't remember the child's name, and Sam quickly stated that the child's name was Ruby. Patricia attempted to brush this off by saying that Sam couldn't expect her to remember the name of a child she had never met. Sam was upset by this remark and started to leave, but then informed her of the events at the Luthor press conference. She then pressed on and asked if as a child she did anything strange. For example, if ever had a really bad fall or lifted anything heavy, and Patricia firmly stated no and tried to change the subject. Samantha, however, persisted and asked about her birth mother. Patricia then took her to the barn and showed her the pod that she found her in. She stated that she never adopted Sam, she found her, helpless and scared as a baby in the pod. Patricia said that she planned to tell her when she turned eighteen, but she had left by then due to the pregnancy. Confirming her suspicions of being an alien (of which, National City now abounded of), Samantha examined the side panel of the ship, and this caused the pod to turn on and a beacon emerged on the front side of the ship.
Later, Samantha told Ruby she would be going out to find some answers and promised her she will tell her everything once she got back, apologizing for how she behaved earlier and had Ruby hold her by the wrist and hand, assuring her daughter that something wonderful is coming their way. She also left money for takeout and told her that the sitter would be arriving shortly. She then took the beacon she found from the ship and followed its light out and into the middle of the desert. However, when her car broke down, after a long while of driving, she was forced to go on foot. Beginning to doubt this endeavor, she nevertheless followed the beacon's signal to the middle of a clearing leading to a vast and eroding desert. All of a sudden, the ground shook and pikes made of rock emerged to form a huge structure.
Samantha cautiously went inside the structure, not knowing what to expect from there, and placed the beacon into a console panel that caused everything around her to activate. A holographic projection emerged, similar to that of Alura Zor-El that Kara keeps at the D.E.O headquarters, and told her she had answers for her questions. Samantha told the projection that she had seen her in her dreams, and asked who she was. The projection responded by saying that was science, magic, information, and a friend. Sam asked what the place they were in was, and the projection responded by saying that they were in the Fortress of Sanctuary, a piece of her world, the dead planet Krypton. Familiar with the tale of the mentioned and destroyed alien home-world, from what was commonly known concerning both Superman and Supergirl's extra-terrestrial origins, Sam was shocked to discover that she indeed had powers, and realized that if she was Kryptonian, she was like Supergirl. The hologram corrected her and said that she was more than that. Samantha pressed her about this, and the hologram stated that she was a "World killer", a genetically-engineered being designed to "execute justice". Feeling her hopes rising, Sam thought this meant that she was destined to become a hero like Supergirl, but the hologram stated that mankind would not see her as a hero. Instead, they would try to contain her power to no avail. She would dispense justice without mercy, and cause Earth to burn.
Samantha's eyes glow as she receives the memories of "Reign".
Sam rejected this instantly, saying she was a good person with a life and a daughter. The hologram coldly stated that Ruby was an error who delayed the full manifestation of her powers. Sam was angered by this and snapped that Ruby was not an error. The hologram assured her that she would eventually forget about Ruby and all of her other mortal trappings. Sam rejected this, saying she would never become that person. The hologram told her that it was time for her to fulfill her true purpose as Reign. Sam screamed and doubled over in agony; as it turned out, her powers were manifesting in full. She suddenly stopped, opened her eyes and raised her head in a calm, almost peaceful manner as she stood up. When she looked forth her eyes they turned a bright red, she fully became the world killer Reign and she eerily stated, "I have awoken" in ancient Kryptonian.
The Rise of Reign
Sam had awakened from a nightmare in her bed when Ruby entered. Ruby asked about her trip, but Sam had no memories of it. Sam and Ruby were invited to Kara's Christmas party, in which Sam was late with the cupcakes. She had a brief interaction with Alex before she got some wine and started to talk with Kara and Lena. She and Kara then started teasing Lena about how she liked James Olsen and he liked her back, although Lena denied the claims. Kara then told them about how she was happy to have them as her best friends, to which Lena and Sam return the sentiment.
The next day, Sam was working while she watched the news and heard a mention of a gang that had been selling drugs and killing by the docks. She was angered by this and when Ruby came in and the two argued about how Sam wasn't going home with Ruby on Christmas Eve. Sam calmed her down by remembering a previous Christmas that they had spent on the road together, and reminded her that if they have each other, everything would be okay. She then gave Ruby her present, which was a necklace with the Supergirl symbol; somehow knowing that the symbol stands for “stronger together”, Sam tells Ruby that was how they are together as mother and daughter — stronger. Reign took control over Sam soon after that night and killed the gang members that were mentioned, as they were in the middle of selling drugs in a clandestine transaction, down by the waterfront.
Sam heard about an assassination attempt on Lena, went to CatCo and asked her about it. Lena stated that she knew it was Morgan Edge pulling the strings but had no proof of it. Sam looked at the picture of Edge and coldly stated that he should be dead for what he tried to do. Reign then took over and exited, ripping open her buttoned shirt to reveal the Worldkiller’s suit with its crest upon her chest, and later attacked Edge's Christmas Party that night, inciting havoc in his office; however, Edge escaped by hiding in a panic room lined with lead. Unable to spot him through the material, Reign wordlessly left and the next day, Edge all but blamed the chaos on Supergirl.
After hearing about the murders and attack on Morgan Edge, Supergirl, intending to draw this new and mysterious Kryptonian out, left her symbol on the roof of CatCo, upon which Sam as Reign, fully-suited, later arrived and waited for her. Not recognizing each other (with Sam’s mind overtaken by Reign, voice distorted and wearing an obscuring mask to cover her physical identity, and Kara assuming her superheroine persona) through their mutual connection with Lena Luthor, the two conversed in which Reign introduces herself and tells Supergirl, who puts up a strong front as advised by Alex, of her own dark origins and the purpose she is now enacting — that she was dispensing justice on Earth, starting from that very city. Supergirl, however, disapproves of how she is doing it and then announces that she was not going to allow her to keep killing. She approaches nearer and extends to Reign the option of surrendering, there and then, or else she would be forced to assert her will and render the latter into a state where there would be no other choice for her but that.
Briefly amused, Reign remarked Supergirl’s hubris, as she also fearlessly lessened the distance between her and the latter so that the two of them are now practically within arm’s reach, and then derided Kara’s borderline hypocritical fore-bearers — who could have done better on Krypton long before the planet’s destruction, but did not until that very last moment of its destruction. She then reciprocates the offer she just received, threatening to send the other Kryptonian to the same extinction where the said fore-bearers now are if she does not stand down. Supergirl brusquely refuses this, causing the World killer to momentarily show some regret for what she was about to do, coldly stating that she would dispense her justice on the former then. Supergirl, in turn, dares Reign to drive her point home, leading to Reign striking first by tackling the heroine and then flying her into the sky, culminating with the pair engaging into a brutal fight that rages throughout the city.
As the fight goes on they initially seem to be of equal strength, throwing and receiving blows that shifted back and forth the tide of the skirmish between the two of them and flinging the two aliens from one part of the city to the next, but Reign eventually proved to be much stronger than Supergirl, and made her bleed. She even wounded and injured her so much that Supergirl gradually became powerless against her in humiliating defeat. Though Supergirl — felled and on her knees — precariously claimed that she doesn’t fear Reign, the latter knows better and points out that neither of them were gods and devils, but simply rather that one was to be judged by hand of the other. Emerging victorious, Reign stated she will continue her way of justice, as she picked up her defeated adversary by the front of Supergirl's suit, before dropping Supergirl from the edge of the building they were at and onto the concrete below. Pleased with her victory, she then flew off and presumably returned back to Sam's home.
That morning, which was Christmas day, Ruby came downstairs calling for her mother and happily announced that it was Christmas. Sam, who was dressed all in black, with fingers and thumb twitching on one hand, whirled around.[8]
Against a Legion
Sam and Ruby are next seen playing together in a nerf-gun battle inside their house, with the former, due to her lack of coordination (and perhaps still rearing from her strife with Supergirl), sending a few household accessories crashing from atop one of the furniture there. Right before the time came for Ruby to go, Sam’s eyes fell upon the printed news, with front cover illustration showing herself as Reign and how the rogue Kryptonian was on the loose, in lieu with Supergirl being M.I.A.; Reign herself instantly took over, causing Sam’s eyes to flash red.
Later, as Reign, she returns to the Fortress of Sanctuary, where the AI hologram congratulated her on her victory over Supergirl, but is quickly informed that there was still much for her left to do in preparation for the awakening that she is meant to enact. After inquiring of what the next steps are that she must then take, she was next seen speed-flying in pursuit of a getaway car, snatching one of the gangsters in it and delivering him into CatCo, where she demanded they televise her message. Lena who was there with James, however, defies that causing Reign to shoot a smile at the feisty Luthor for talking back at her in that manner. But still, Reign would not be dissuaded from her purpose of coming there; she instructs one of the nearby cameraman to aim his contraption at her and began broadcasting her message, in which she was basically waging war against humanity's unlawful elements.
And true enough, after peacefully leaving from CatCo, Reign began to target criminality in all its forms, along with those who protect them from her, taking down a drug cartel and then later the cops who stood in her way after seeing for themselves the brutality of her measures. She later descends upon what appeared to be a bank robbery, warning the robbers of what she will now bring upon them for their conduct. It quickly becomes clear that the whole thing was a set-up orchestrated by the D.E.O., with its field operatives — as “robbers” and “cooperatives” alike — emerging from their disguises, spearheaded by J'onn and Alex, to corner Reign and implement the Sundown Protocol that sent a barrage of anti-Kryptonian weaponry and tactics against the world killer, ranging from red sun grenades to sonic weapons, heavy restraints and, of course, Green Kryptonite still available in the D.E.O.'s possession with Alex herself mounting the substance around Reign’s neck. And for a time, the Protocol seemed effective, weakening the disguised Sam enough to bring her down on her knees; but through sheer strength and willpower she overcomes the odds stacked against her, lashing out of her restraints and inflicting injury on Alex's leg, leaving the agent at Reign’s mercy and forcing her Martian employer to intervene, striking the world killer away using his own extra-terrestrial strength. Seeing that her enemies were well-prepared for her arrival, Reign took off and escaped through a window.
And in retaliation for the ambush, as message, Reign later stages a one-woman invasion at the correctional facility in Albatross Bay where, after striking down those who stood in her way, eventually found the holding cell wherein Thomas Coville was being kept and, entering the containment, Reign finds him kneeling down and showing deference before her Juru glyph that he made on one of the walls there; addressing her as the one who would bring forth the renewal and reciting — in English — some archaic Kryptonian passages that concerned the Juru, intriguing Reign enough to inquire as to how Coville knew of them. The imprisoned cult leader turned to face her and states that he only wishes to be delivered from her judgement and into salvation, causing Reign (who, by all accounts, was prepped to eliminate him then and there) to consider sparing him when Coville claims he could be of service to her cause. But before he could receive the worldkiller’s answer, the blaring sound of Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer roared outside.
Leaving Coville to investigate, Reign (impressively) busts through a prison wall and realizes that the loud and exhilarating music was intended to draw her attention by those who have come to challenge her after tracking Reign to the prison that she was just terrorizing. Spotting Imra Ardeen and Mon-El, side-by-side, the Bon Jovi song was revealed to be coming from a highly-advanced 31st Century interstellar vessel emerging from the edge of the bay where the prison was at. Maintaining her composure, Reign says to the alien couple that they shall not interfere with what she was trying to usher, but the latter two responds otherwise.
The three of them then proceeded to fly into the sky where, with the Legion ship backing Mon-El and his wife, they got into an aerial battle where Braniac 5, who was piloting the ship, aimed the vessel’s armaments at the world killer, sending her crashing back to the prison but has since then been able to defend herself against the ship’s artillery fire — deflecting one such back to its source and reaping damage upon the ship that Mon-El decides to take the fight back at ground level, lest their support vessel (in where Kara is currently unconscious and convalescing; not to mention the other Legion members who were still in hypersleep) sustains even more damage, with the Daxamite’s wife joining him. And from there, Imra headed the attack, using her telekinesis to levitate several lifting weights found at the prison’s workout yard and sent them at Reign’s direction, who promptly counters using her heat vision to blast the incoming weights away.
And as she did away with them, one by one, Mon-El proceeds to pull out, from the sleeve of his Legionnaire suit a small syringe of concentrated green Kryptonite and ran towards the preoccupied Reign. Unfortunately, the world killer sees him coming and, in response, blew out a super-cold mist at him; shifting to the defense, Imra concentrated to form a round, telekinetic barrier around her husband that was quickly engulfed by Reign’s freezing breath, sparing Mon-El from the cold but also trapping him from within the shell of ice produced from the clashing of powers between the two alien women, momentarily surprising Reign. She then walks up closer to engage them in melee, but was blocked in her path by J'onn who grabbed her and uses his Martian intangibility to phase with Reign down into the earth in an attempt to trap her there; but the masked Sam violently fights back even whilst being phased through subterranean levels, sending the two aliens back to the surface — both with significant injuries to themselves.
But in spite of that, Reign was quick to recover, spotting Imra heading to the side of the ice-imprisoned Mon-El and punching her several feet away. Stating that her Imra’s desire to safeguard sinners makes Imra one herself, Reign was about to finish the job when she spots Supergirl, seemingly fully-recovered and hovering right next to the Legionnaires’ ship, much to her surprise. Reign expresses that she thought she finished off the other Kryptonian in their last battle, and Kara deflects this with bravado and had the Legion’s vessel fire upon the ice sphere, liberating Mon-El, while she herself soared down upon Reign and bringing the two of them crashing.
And again, the world killer was the first to get back up on her feet; she stalks Supergirl, who was still upon the paved ground and trying to clamber up herself, but appeared to still be frail from recuperating in one of the Legionnaires’ rejuvenation tanks and has yet to truly return to her full vigor and power. Edging and menacingly looming over the latter, Reign reaches down and grabs a terrified-looking Kara (whose facial veins glew a disturbing green) by the shoulder declaring that she will now purify the Last Daughter of the House of El free of her sins. But yet to surrender, Supergirl swung her arm — stabbing Reign with another syringe loaded with refined Kryptonite, like the one Mon-El pulled out, right around the jugular of her neck’s left side and revealing that the reason why green veins were erupting on Kara's face, and why she appeared already weakening this soon after entering into the fray, was because she had the second syringe clutched in her hand and was waiting for the masked Kryptonian to get near enough for Kara to not miss when she stabs and shoots Reign with its contents.
The plan works, and Reign instantly began to show signs of her own might diminishing, with green veins now creeping and spreading around her neck from where Supergirl stabbed her. Realizing that the tables have turned, Reign flies off and flees, leaving Supergirl and her allies at the penitentiary. Later on her back, she is seen in her Fortress, writhing excruciatingly for a while upon its interior foundation until her own bloodstream forcibly expunges the weakening element from her system and ending her pain. Getting back up again, she looks around the abode and spies on the syringe that Supergirl used to render her into such a wretched state, with the world killer inadvertently bringing in with herself when she flew back into the Fortress to recover. Cautiously approaching to inspect the implement at a safe distance, Reign gave a small, audible gasp and rounded up when the hologram called her from behind, inquiring as to what has occurred; respectfully bowing down, Reign meekly confesses that Supergirl bested her, but not alone since the latter had allies that Reign did not anticipate — outnumbering the world killer, thus her defeat this time around.
Not remotely shaken, the hologram informs Reign that she has friends herself, confusing the latter. The hologram then discloses that the are other world killers, besides Reign, spawned by the Juru, and that recruiting them could even the odds in Reign’s favor; this elicited an indignant reaction from Reign, furious that knowledge of her own brethren was withheld from her until now, and the hologram simply stated that the world killer has not proven herself up to that point, but now Reign has. And now that she is aware of her kindred, Reign must now find them to help set into fruition their grand agenda.
Reign then realizes that there was another person in the Fortress of Santuary with her; Thomas Coville, the same man she contemplated into extending mercy to while back at the Albatross Bay penitentiary. Appearing from behind the world killer, Thomas offers his assistance in bringing together all of the world killers, since his knowledge and experience on planet Earth could prove beneficial for their upcoming endeavor. The A.I. hologram then states the House of El's motto, which Coville solemnly says in English.
To Fort Rozz
She and Ruby are later seen visiting Alex, still recovering from the leg injury that Reign inflicted on her in her loft with Kara leading the way. And because Sam has to go on a business trip on L-Corp’s behalf and Ruby’s babysitter is unavailable for the extent of the trip, she was more than happy and willing for Alex to briefly babysit Ruby, throughout the day, while Sam was away. Sam was next seen talking to Lena at the L-Corp CEO’s office, with the latter giving last minute instructions to her acting CEO. Promising satisfactory results upon her return for her employer, the two of them hugged before parting ways; but as soon as Lena left, Sam ominously heard some Kryptonian phrases that only she alone could hear, causing her eyes to flash crimson and Reign to emerge, punching and dealing noticeable damage on her desk.
Reign, fully-attired, later returned to the Fortress of Sanctuary, where the AI hologram demands as to why she came late and the world killer explains that the human side of her being, Sam, is growing stronger. Strong enough that Reign was beginning to notice the periods of time, in which she is allowed control over Sam’s body, growing shorter and lesser (if not fluctuating in duration) overtime — despite having once been told, on their first meeting inside of the Fortress, by the hologram that this “weaker” side of Reign will eventually become irrelevant, leaving only Reign in dominion. The hologram chides her, saying that Samantha should be no hindrance for what sought to deliver was of greater stake than someone so mundane. Reign apologizes and agrees, stating that her main priority right now must be to gather the other world killers still dormant on Earth.
The hologram counters that notion, however, informing Reign of an alternative mission that is just as important as Reign's gathering: the Fortress has detected a signal coming from Fort Rozz. Apparently, the prison has detected the presence of Supergirl and her allies docking into the Fort as it orbits around a blue star. Baffled, Reign inquires of their purpose for coming to the abandoned alien prison and the hologram surmises it as to gain information on the world killer since a prisoner being held there, Jindah Kol Rozz, has extensive and intensive knowledge of the Juru, having once served as a priestess to their people. And with Jindah’s knowledge extending far back from long before Krypton’s destruction, Supergirl's faction attaining that information could have serious repercussions to both the Juru’s legacy and plans, worrying Reign who was then instructed by the hologram to come after the expedition to Fort Rozz, providing the world killer with a Kryptonian space pod of her own that will transport Reign to the prison.
That pod would later be spotted coming entrance into the prison’s docking port by Gayle Marsh a.k.a. Psi and Imra Ardeen from inside of the Legionnaires’ ship, after the former psychically detected Reign’s arrival, despite the D.E.O.-issued psionic-interfering headband she was made to wear that hampers most of her mind-based powers (just enough to keep Psi from transmitting, but not so to prevent her from receiving). Soon after disembarking into Fort Rozz, she stumbles upon Jindah and Supergirl, with the former deriding the latter for “living in the light” for so long and thus know nothing of true darkness that belies in every living being — the same darkness that the Juru languished in when they were discredited and erased from Krypton’s recorded history, and exiled into until it brought them their own twisted perspective of comfort, which drove them into creating the worldkillers to balance out their suffering with those who never had to endure it, horrifying Kara at knowing that there are other world killers besides Reign.
It was then that Reign herself would announce her presence, having deemed the priestess as a major liability to her primary goal, with her spouting off such sensitive information of the sort that Supergirl came precisely to acquire. Recognizing Reign at once, but failing to foresee what the world killer now intends to do to her, Jindah became elated thinking that the former came to liberate her from Fort Rozz and turned her attention back to Kara to gloat how the House of El glyph-bearer’s doom shall be the Juru priestess’s salvation. However, it soon became apparent to both of them that Reign had different plans; she fired her red-colored heat vision behind Jindah, going through her chest and killing the priestess instantly. Shocked, Kara asks how could the world killer retain her powers in a place irradiated by a blue sun. Aware that the same cannot be said of Supergirl's own powers in the presence of the star AZ336XB12, and therefore giving the worldkiller a monumental advantage in the absence of a yellow sun, the disguised Sam merely replied that, unlike the superheroine, she does not receive empowerment from particular and very specific solar-based sources.
Advancing on the powerless Supergirl, Reign taunts the latter remarking that she does not sense from her the same kind of self-assured bravado that she recalls when they were back on planet Earth — and for good reason, given the present circumstances — and likens Kara to a weak and defenseless, fearful child. However, just like how she did at the nearing end of her first fight with Reign, Kara states that Reign does not intimidate her in the slightest and tries to appeal to the worldkiller’s sense of morality. Reign scoffs at this, coming up close to her fellow Kryptonian and mocks her for thinking that the two of them could ever come into a compromise. Her eyes then glew red as she readied to kill Supergirl with searing vision at that close range, only for Livewire to interfere with a stream of electricity that forced the two Kryptonians apart from each other.
Recognizing the supposedly villainous meta-human, Reign asks if Leslie came to Supergirl’s rescue and Livewire claims she came to take the murderous Kryptonian down. The two of them fought while Kara took cover, with Reign having a hard time subduing Livewire due to her ability to travel instantly from place to place in the form of static electricity that caused the genetically-modified Kryptonian to miss repeatedly with her heat vision; but likewise, Reign proves herself more resilient to Leslie’s powers than an empowered Supergirl ever was — either absorbing or dodging the former shock-jock’s sparking assaults. Deeming the meta-human as a nuisance, she engaged with Leslie in a “Beam-O-War” battle with Livewire’s electric discharge pitted against Reign’s burning gaze. The two sources closed in on each other, allowing Reign to single-handedly grab and choke Livewire after the meta-human neared within the former’s reach. Seeing Leslie in trouble and without a thought of concern for herself, Kara descended on the worldkiller to try getting her to release Leslie; but the masked Sam simply threw her off and this infuriated Leslie enough to grab her detainer’s wrist and channel a rising surge that Reign initially barely felt, through her limb, but intensified to the degree that it ultimately threw both of them off each other. Unfortunately, that expended the last of Livewire’s energy reserves, leaving her depowered and vulnerable. Reign appears to have noticed that and began charging her eyes again for the killing strike.
But Supergirl came up behind her and pleading for Reign to cease, drawing the latter’s attention away from Leslie. Kara then attempted to reason with the worldkiller once again, telling her to judge the powerless Kryptonian instead of Livewire for she was only there with her because Supergirl asked her to join her on the search for Jindah; thus, Leslie does not deserve to die by Reign’s hand because she was living straight and (somewhat) peacefully, keeping herself and her capabilities from anything criminal, anyway ever since Reign made her presence and intents publicly known. However, this only merited that Reign shall still kill both of them, just not at once, and that she will be starting with Supergirl. She charges her heat vision, and Kara bravely stood her ground, prepared for the coup de grâce but Leslie jumped in the way, receiving the super-heated blast instead of Kara, shocking both her and Reign, who orders the former to keep away from the felled Livewire with glowing crimson eyes still fully charged for her next kill: Supergirl.
And just then, yet another belligerent entered into the scene and Sam, as Reign, turned her attention to the newly-arrivedPsi who addresses the worldkiller as “Blackbird” while tilting her head slightly to the side and Reign took a moment to regard this new arrival hinting that — unlike with Leslie — she has little, if any, knowledge on the fear-inducing meta-human (which implies that Psi’s very specific imprisonment was kept top-secret and highly classified). Seeing that Reign was studying her, Gayle took advantage of the worldkiller’s momentary bafflement and wonders what goes on in the other woman’s psyche before firing a particularly potent psionic blast into it. Immediately, Reign jolts and began to heave, nearly doubling over and grabs her masked face in pain as Gayle’s influence comes into a clashing conflict with Sam’s dictating Juru programming, bringing Sam to her knees in the physical world as Psi and Kara looked on. And whilst screaming, in her mind, the worldkiller glimpses visions of herself losing grip of a crying and distressed Ruby, whom she loses into eternal darkness. This causes Sam to emerge back into control, albeit breathing heavily, panicky and sobbing due to the forced manifestation of what she finds most terrifying from within her own mind, courtesy of Marsh. Opening her eyes, she fearfully looks around in fidgety confusion, unsure as to how she got to where she was (or what the heck she’s wearing). Her gaze fell on Kara, whom she recognizes in her alter-ego persona and Kara, in turn and despite Leslie’s demise caused by Reign, expresses concern for the other now-visibly frightened Kryptonian before her, who was now behaving farthest from the person trying to kill her from minutes back — let alone as the masked vigilante, who brutalized Kara senseless, from only a few days ago during the Yule season.
Sam's Reign persona began to take hold again; shifting from where she was kneeling and realizing that she risks losing control of herself completely, to her human side, should the fight drag on in Psi’s presence, the worldkiller immediately took off and retreated back to her pod, disembarking from Fort Rozz. Later, Sam, as herself, would return to Alex’s place to collect Ruby. As her daughter leaves Alex’s living room, Alex inquires Sam of her work trip — perplexing Sam who did not left for such but recalls having said to Alex that she will from earlier; checking her phone, Sam sees messages left by Lena on the trip that the former apparently failed to show up for. Distress, she recounts all the times when she was blacking out again and again, with no memory of where she went or what she did, until she comes to — much to Alex's worry.
Confessions
Sam was next seen in L-Corp, with Alex whose leg finally healed and thus could now move about without the crutches, as they head to one of the establishment’s medical research labs where an MRI scanner was situated; apparently, Sam agreed to use her company clearance in allowing Alex to medically diagnose her using L-Corp's resources (which is a fine choice, since the alternative would be to use the D.E.O.’s, which Alex cannot so frivolously exploit at any rate for obvious reasons). Garbed in a sanitary hospital gown, it was seen that Sam was nervous as she inquires the other woman of the latter’s credentials on the field of medicine — with Alex sharing with Arias truncated details of her professional life and how she went from licensed physician, originally from Seattle and practicing medical studies there, to fully-fledged federal agent because Alex felt she needed more excitement in her life beyond the confines of a research lab.
Alex’s patient thanks her for agreeing to go along with the MRI test though the former expresses mild apprehension that they are about to conduct it in L-Corp property, and using the company’s state-of-the-art scanning equipment no less. Samantha, who has a say in the matter, assures her that it was no trouble since no one but the two of them will be there for the whole day and that she personally doesn’t fancy getting examined in a hospital, finding it about as inconvenient as whatever ailment she sustains that sent her into such in the first place. Alex then has Sam mount herself, on her back, into the machine; and as the latter loaded into it, she states that she did some research herself on the symptoms that she was having — and they may implicate very life-crippling, if not threatening, ails such as brain tumor or ALS to name a few, though Alex attributes that it could also be from something as minor and insubstantial as caffeine withdrawal, humoring Sam. Alex then details out the designated protocols for the scanning procedure, promising her friend that together they will cope with whatever results to come.
Later, the two of them are looking at the MRI’s scans shown from a monitor; frowning, Alex notes that she couldn’t find anything from the preliminary tests that would indicate the cause to Sam’s unknown affliction — hinting that the problem may not be something or anything rooted from within the recipient after all. But just to be sure, Alex proposes that they send the results, along with a sample of Sam’s blood, to a qualified expert. She prepares some implements to intravenously draw and store some of her patient’s blood while Sam mildly laments on how frequently she had to lie as of late at work, to Lena, because of her condition and that Sam tires of it. Alex suggests that maybe the time was now due for some honesty on Sam's part — which means finally letting the people close to Samantha’s life in on her current predicament.
Sam understandably shies away from the idea of that notion for with so many responsibilities weighting down on her as the people expecting Sam to get the job done in the end and as one who has stood independently for the sake of her family since she’s had Ruby, the last thing she wants is for those people to see just how vulnerable she is at the moment — this was high-lightened when she cringed from the sight of the syringe that Alex was readying to draw Sam’s blood with. And as the minimal amount of blood transferred, Alex, sensing and recognizing Sam’s worries all too well, opens up telling her friend that she shouldn’t shut herself off like that and specially not to her loved ones as they are the ones most likely to sympathize with her troubles, even over professional matters since one of them happened to be her boss and Lena, who will understand Sam’s plight anyway, was too decent an employer to deserve being lied to by someone she trusts at both on and off of work.
But Sam remains indecisive; she replies that she’s used to doing things her way without relying on anyone else for as long as she can remember, since around the time when her pregnancy brought Ruby into her life and then, of course, with Patricia kicking the Sam and her child out, and now having to consort with Alex just to figure out what is wrong with her feels like the start of a metaphorical chink to the armor that Sam has worn from the point of motherhood. And so Alex lets Sam in on the marginally similar problems that she was having lately and how they relate to Sam’s: after Alex broke up with Maggie, the former was terrified to even talk about it but Kara wouldn’t allow her sister to clutch to herself all of that pain from parting with Sawyer. And with her adopted sister’s support, Alex managed to pull through from the heartbreak’s attendant despair and get back at her feet; putting that perspective in comparison to Sam’s, Alex then stresses that she was not about to simply stand and watch as Sam goes down the path that Alex almost did, for it is with friends having each other’s backs that one conquers troubles like this lest the latter be suppressed and then eat away at someone from within. Finally conceding, Sam replies that she’ll be talking to both Kara and Lena later that day, much to Alex’s approval. And in true "amiable children's doctor" - fashion, Alex hands Samantha a lollipop as reward for the patient’s cooperation, which Sam appreciates.
The two of them are later seen at CatCo searching for Lena and Kara, with the latter pair being found by the former walking away from the direction of the elevator and into the floor's main office. And with Sam standing just behind and taking the backseat to what comes next, Alex was the first to speak, inquiring both her sister and Lena if there was time for them to talk. The four of them were next seen seated down in the company head’s office, with both Lena and Kara extending their sympathies to the indiscernible difficulties that Sam was having, having been informed of such by both her and Alex — as advised to do so by the latter during the clinical tests from earlier. Samantha apologizes for not telling them sooner, saying that her independence and never relying too much on anyone outside of her family was what allowed her and Ruby to get by, and that letting her dear ones know how she’s been falling apart as of late may result in them finally seeing Sam’s vulnerability that she has long kept hidden, and thereby losing faith and confidence in her completely.
Kara counters that, telling her friend that it is fine becoming vulnerable as then her friends will be there in Sam’s darkest moment to help her rise back up again. Samantha replies that if only herself was at stake, then it’d be fine; but it isn’t. The fact is: she has a dependent child who awaits her every night after work. She then recounts to the other three women in the room of the time when she delivered Ruby into the world at childbirth. How, from long prior to the final labors of birth, she wasn’t sure if she was fit to become a mother. But all of that changed from the moment the infant Ruby was handed to her in the hospital — compelling Samantha to become the mother that she believes her newborn child deserves. Thus, Sam’s greatest fear was if Ruby were to lose her mother at such a young age, leaving her daughter alone and defenseless in the world; all Ruby has in the world is her Sam and vice-versa, explaining the latter’s deep-seated worry. Her friends assures her that they are not just a small circle of such, but they are also family which makes Ruby likewise by extension, with Lena adding that there’s not much to stand in the way of Sam for her own daughter’s sake, since both mother and child are not alone in this, comforting Sam who was overwhelmed by her friends’ kindness. They then tell her to get better, promising within capacity to help Samantha in any way they can.
Later, all four of them converged in Kara’s place, with Sam sitting apprehensively on the couch, while Kara and Lena seated oppositely at either side of her, as Alex finishes her call through her phone; Lena and her two employees were waiting for what news that Alex may bring. The older Danvers sibling hung up the phone and addresses the three other women in the room with her, informing them that Sam’s completed medical tests and subsequent reports, just received by Alex, ruled out the worse possibilities that all four of them were dreading, much to their relief (sans Sam’s). Alex even adds that Sam’s state of physical health appeared to be in fine order.
But even then, Samantha still worries. For if her affliction was nothing serious, what then could be happening to her? Her friends promise to collaborate together in absolving it. But for now, they recommend that Sam should find solace in the good news and cherish every moment she has with her daughter just the same, meriting them Samantha’s gratitude as she would practically be lost without them and Ruby in her life. Placing a hand on Lena and Kara's knees as a gesture of confidence, Sam thanks them for being there for her and promptly took their advice — leaving them so she could be with Ruby that day.
Sisterhoods
Samantha later returns to L-Corp, talking to someone on the phone as she entered her office room, when she finds Lena standing by and leaning over the desk, looking at some company statistics from the computer tablet atop there. Surprised to see her boss there (despite of the room, by all rights, being Lena’s) so early, Sam hangs up the line she was talking through and awkwardly greets her employer who looks up from the tablet and greets back; Lena inquires the newly-arrived Sam if everything was fine and the latter explained that she was going to have human resources relegate some employees at one of L-Corp’s underperforming research branches, stating that she was about to handle it.
Lena speaks up, saying that she can take care of that for Sam and that she’d like to relieve being back in command at her old company’s domains. This causes dissension to rise from Sam and noticing that that, Lena assures the former that her taking control from Samantha, however briefly, has nothing to do with the latter’s somewhat questionable work performance as of late. But Sam correctly guesses that this supersession was due more to her illness that, up to that point, has yet to be identified by cause and why it persists. She worries if Lena was beginning to doubt her ability as an employee.
Beckoning Sam to sit down with her, Lena recounts to the former of the time they first met, from back when she was charged in handling L-Corp's takeover of Sam’s old company, finding Samantha all alone in the office room - at 3 am, poring over and evaluating cross analysis reports (that apparently Sam, to the present day, was very proud of) - by her desk that had the only light in the room as she assessed the paperwork. How from at that instant, Lena had the instinct to work close together with someone as dedicated to corporate work as Sam. She then tells the latter that her taking some time off, assuring Sam that no one in the company will think any less of her in doing so and that Lena, as her boss, only wishes to alleviate Sam’s stress at the workplace parallel to the difficulties that she has been having in her own life.
Sam tries to decline, but Lena emphasizes otherwise - turning her request for Sam to take the day off into an order from the company superior. With nothing at L-Corp that Lena can't handle in Sam's stead, the former advises the latter to be with her daughter, Ruby, that day. Samantha appreciates her employer's kindness and complies. She was later seen fetching Ruby at school, having texted to her beforehand that they will be ice-skating after school, and pointing out that it was mental health holiday when Ruby asks her mother why are they heading to the local ice-rink. Ruby mildly suspects that something was amiss, but Samantha just says that she misses seeing her and they will be leisurely spending the whole day together to remedy that, much to Ruby’s excitement.
Later on, at the center of the ice rink, along with crowds of other people, Sam and Ruby - both on pairs of ice skates - were about race to the rink’s edge when Samantha got off early for a head start, forcing her daughter to chase after her “cheating” mother. But just then as she was ahead, Sam received mental summons from the Fortress of Sanctuary to manifest her world killer persona, halting and allowing Ruby to overtake her to the edge that by the time her child turned around, her mother was nowhere to be found, prompting Ruby into contacting Lena at L-Corp where she thinks Sam might have disappeared and went back to.
At her Fortress, Sam, fully garbed as Reign and with the latter having taken over, walks over to the structures interior with her crystal at hand, inserting it into the alien structure’s control console. Immediately, the A.I. hologram appears informing her charge that someone got to one of Reign’s kind before she has. The world killer inquires as to how the hologram knows and the latter answers that this other world killer also possesses a crystal similar to Reign’s, which was activated no doubt by those who homed in on the second world killer to emerge. The hologram advises her agent to be delicate in recruiting her "sister", as the last thing they want was to do so callously and therefore be seen as enemies by this newly-awakened world killer - which was the precise opposite of what they were trying to achieve; but at the same time, Reign must make haste, lest her sister be taken away. Reign obediently agrees.
Reign would later track the other worldkiller, Purity, at the subway where the latter was engaged in battle against Alex, J’onn, Supergirl and Mon-El - the D.E.O.'s field assets. And even then Julia, as Purity, maintained the clear upper hand and only reverting back to the former’s persona after Alex talked Purity out of killing Kara. Unfortunately for them, by then was Reign’s arrival, bursting through the ceiling; she mocks Supergirl, whose legs were crippled by Purity from earlier, for having been brought down on her knees by yet another world killer, but also remarks that it was good practice for what is to come. Alex then began firing her alien handgun wildly at Reign, who was mostly unaffected by the human’s repeated gunfire assault and went to close in to disarm Alex, felling the agent.
She then places her foot on Alex with the intent to smother her, only prevented from doing so (as Supergirl was helpless to stop Reign)when Julia spoke up telling Reign that she’ll come quietly, ignoring the disabled Supergirl begging Julia not to, provided that the agent be spared. Acknowledging her sister’s plea, the disguised Sam releases Alex and goes over to Julia cooing to the latter her world killer identity, promising that together they will find their third, Pestilence, and with the trinity’s completion there will only be undisputable power to follow. That said, she grabs Julie and flies off.
Later reverting into her human persona, Sam would come rushing back to Lena at L-Corp - having been called and told by how the latter took care of Ruby after Sam apparently abandoned her, while back at the rink, without warning. Lena assures her that Ruby is safe at her apartment, sleeping, having called the former to the ice rink after her mother’s disappearance; Samantha distresses over what is happening to her, worried that if it was scaring her, then it must be more so for Ruby. Lena informs her that it's not just Ruby who was growing bothered by Samantha’s inexplicable behavior and asks Sam if she could recall where’s she’s been after leaving Ruby, to which Sam replies that, again, she doesn’t.
Lena then tells her that Ruby began noticing of the other times this has happened, flummoxing Sam who believed her daughter was oblivious to all of that. But Lena stresses that Ruby was smart and perceptive for her age. Sam then realizes that her boss must have compared notes with Ruby and informed the latter of her mysterious illness - which was something that should just be between Sam, her employer and the Danvers siblings. Incensed, Sam tells Lena that what the latter did was out of place even as her employer and only Sam alone bears that privilege. Lena defends her actions, trying to calm her friend down, and saying that the latter’s close-to-untraceable disappearances are coinciding with something, to which she must now ask Sam some urgent questions about.
But rather than complying, at that point with her world killer persona beginning to emerge, Reign orders Lena to stop talking right before turning to face Lena and advancing threateningly towards Lena. However, Sam's conscience started to take hold again, causing Lena to witness the shared body’s eyes flashing red as Sam returned to her normal demeanor. She falls to a seat unable to recall what just occurred and Lena, who appeared to have finally connected the dots, goes over to her saying she knows what is happening and promising to make it better.
Discovering that she is Reign
Sam is later seen unconsciously bedridden and contained inside a customized, high-tech enclosure in what appeared to be a classified L-Corp laboratory as Lena approaches her, talking to James Olsen via her phone. Finishing Jimmy's call, Lena surveys Samantha’s medically-sedated state with concern.[9]
Sam awakens, after Lena cuts off the sedating intravenous drip that was keeping Arias in a medically-induced coma, gets up of the bed and sees her boss standing at a safe distance outside of the enclosure away from her unusual employee. And, with Lena answering that Ruby was being tended to, after Sam asking about her daughter and how long she had been away, Lena then drops the bomb (figuratively speaking) on Sam - elaborating that the somatic trials and medical tests she inducted upon her employee, whilst Sam was torpid, presented undeniable proof that Sam had been undergoing periods of bodily metamorphic change during her lapses in memory and consciousness, and then back to "default" whenever Sam as herself comes to, retrograding from what she turns into for the duration of such periods. Noticing Lena's ominous tone, Sam and in that grim moment of truth, Lena spills the beans - tentatively telling Sam that she becomes her. Reign, that is. [10]
Personality
Samantha in her civilian persona.
Although Sam is a single mother, she does her very best to support her daughter, Ruby, who is the most important person to her in the world.[6] She is very nice and caring, and has a motherly air to her. She has a high intellect, and has enough business knowledge to run L-Corp flawlessly. She is also a very strong woman, loyal to those closest to her (i.e. Lena Luthor) besides her own daughter, responsible to a fault, quite sociable and can hold her own in mental battles against businessmen, such as Morgan Edge, or even against Reign — Sam’s subliminal worldkiller side — whom the latter, for a time, was able to even talk back at, with impunity, during some of her visits into the mental plane that the two of them share when Lena’s experimental trials, aimed to suppress the Sam’s malevolent alien aspect, somehow brought Sam and Reign there at the same time.
According to Reign herself, Sam's character is stronger than her world killer persona initially dismissed — expressed by Sam taking cumulatively longer periods of control over herself and, in turn, increasingly suppressing Reign to keep her from emerging for just as long in the process, causing her to occasionally miss out or be late on summons sent out to her by the hologram from her Fortress — hinting a substantial sense of individuality on the part of Sam. And after the world killer went up against Psi, it was seen that Sam's greatest dread would be to lose her daughter, Ruby, for good. She later affirms to her closest circle of friends that she fears the thought of Ruby losing her mother and thus be left alone by herself in the world just as much.
Upon Lena realizing Sam's hidden World killer nature and bringing it up to the latter, complete with evidence — both circumstantial and trial-based - that Lena collected to back up her own suspicions on Sam's disturbing condition, Sam was instantly in denial at the very thought of how a seemingly ordinary person and frail human being like herself could be anything like the near-unstoppable alien zealot terrorizing criminality and even brutalized Supergirl in the wake of her inhumane vigilantism. And with Lena maintaining her claims to her employee's extra-terrestrial identity, a perturbed Sam accuses her employer of only thinking so because assuming the worst of people, such to the point of actually doubting their humanity, is what Luthors apparently and ultimately do, making Lena herself no different to the rest of her infamous family. This shows that even Sam, as herself, has her limits for people who fail her in her day-to-day civilian life.

Samantha as Reign.
Due to her forced mental programming operating on her as Reign, Sam becomes an exaggerated polar opposite of everything she is, while her world killer persona remains inactive in her default state, for the periods and durations wherein Reign remains in control: a brutal vigilante who indiscriminately kills anyone she sees as an evildoer in order to further her goal of ruling the world, and will react expediently cold and silently murderous whenever she comes across the said people or catch knowledge of such. She is cruel, sadistic and ruthless towards anyone who stands in her way. She is also egotistical; even though she doesn't actually see herself as a "god" or a "devil", she sees herself as "truth", "judgment", "death" and an executor of justice. Thus, her eventual dominion is inevitable and this causes her to also view those who say or stand otherwise as obstructing targets to her goal.
She believes all of her actions are intended to spread justice to all those who deserve it and is not above mocking or taunting those who oppose her whenever Reign has them at her mercy, making it possible to catch her off-guard when she least expects it. She also perceives that humanity has ruined their world and they must all be judged by her without exception. Despite her ruthlessness, she is not above offering prey whom she sees as her equal a chance to stand down, like how she offered Supergirl to do so (threatening to subject the latter "into purgatory" if she chooses to stand in Reign’s way) and was perhaps a hint disappointed when the latter refuses and even responded defiantly, making the disguised (and mentally-overridden) Samantha realize that she had to manhandle her fellow Kryptonian for her insolence.
But despite all of her negative drives and overzealous conviction, it would seem that Sam — as Reign — still retains vestiges of her civilian persona in that she has been known to simply leave be or tolerate those whom she is familiar with as Sam, even if they directly oppose her; this was made apparent when she smiled in amusement after Lena, her civilian boss and friend, refused to comply when Reign came to deliver her message to the world via CatCo's broadcast, rather than viewed the human as a standing obstacle to the cleansing that she was trying to effect (and the world killer would have killed her, just for that, on the most recent instructions received from the Fortress of Sanctuary) upon Earth, but went on with her purpose anyway and left Lena unharmed. Additionally, she rapidly took over and went immediately after Morgan Edge upon Sam learning that Edge staged an assault against Lena from days prior, hinting a protective (if not fiercely territorial) side of herself even as Reign.
Though this leniency of sorts oddly did not prevent her from attempting to go after Alex (whom Sam is also reasonably acquainted with) when the latter, J'onn and several of the D.E.O. operatives staged a futile ambush against the world killer - and had to be physically stopped by the Martian himself. Reign would later come close to killing Alex, knocking the latter down then stepping over to place a foot upon Alex's chest (though to be fair, at both confrontations, Alex clearly presented herself as Reign's enemy when she forced green kryptonite around the world killer's neck to bring the masked Sam down during first and then repeatedly fired several ineffective shots, in the second, with her gun at the latter) after telling the agent that she'll take her life then and there - only stopping at the beseech of Julia, who offers to be taken and become Purity completely on the condition that Alex was allowed to live.
The fact that Reign agreed to Julia's terms shows an honorable aspect on the part of the former not obligated to carry out every will of the Fortress of Sanctuary and would also not do anything as drastic as taking another's life without sufficient motive, since retrieving her fellow world killer, Purity, was her primary obligation at that time.

Powers
- Altered Kryptonian physiology: This woman's physiology was mutated due to genetic experiments and dark magic. While normally her capacities are no greater than a normal human of her physical conditioning, once empowered, she becomes able to perform a variety of otherworldly feats. Even more, Sam's Kryptonian physiology has been genetically augmented from centuries of experimentation by Kryptonian scientists. Due to this, her powers are naturally greater than any normal solar-powered Kryptonian. It is said that she was born from Rao's fire. According to a Kryptonian hologram, Sam as Reign has powers that are more advanced and potent than Supergirl, proven by her decisive victory over the National City protector. It is unknown if she is more powerful than Superman, but it is likely that she is just as powerful as him, as she has been on Earth for at least 35 years; the same number of years that Superman has spent under the Earth's yellow sun, but has augmented, much more potent powers, making Sam one of the most powerful beings in in the multiverse.
- Accelerated healing factor: Sam's metabolism is tremendously enhanced by solar energy, allowing accelerated healing abilities and burning calories at a fast rate, making her practically immune to becoming overweight.
- Contaminant immunity: Sam has an immunity to all forms of disease and contaminants.
- Flight: Sam is able to manipulate her own gravitational field to generate thrust and propel herself through the air, often at supersonic speeds, much faster than she can travel by foot.
- Heat vision: By concentrating every solar energy reserve she has in her body, Sam can emit focused energy beams of variable intensity and temperature from her eyes. Unlike other known Kryptonians, Sam's are bright and searing red; it also appears to be more potent, as with it she was able to kill Livewire, who sacrificed herself to prevent Kara from getting hit instead.
- Invulnerability: Sam is essentially invulnerable to all Earthly weapons, with bullets simply ricocheting off her flesh. Her invulnerability is so intense that even when just beginning to manifest her powers, Sam remained oblivious to being shot at Lena's press conference attack, only noticing the lack of injury a while later. While fighting Supergirl, as a fully transformed Reign, though she was repeatedly staggered from all of the former's powerful attacks, she rather quick to recover and retaliate - emerging with no signs of even being hurt or tired at the end. Sam would later fare the same against J'onn who, despite the Martian's attempt to entrap Sam by miles beneath the Earth by phasing her through the planet's surface, was forced back above ground by the world killer's thrashing movement as J'onn extended his intangibility over to her; and even then, Sam still had enough strength in her to go up against a newly-revived Kara and was only forced to retreat after she got close enough for Supergirl to inject refined Green Kryptonite directly into Sam's deep neck muscle. It was later made evident that her otherworldly resistance to physical harm, like every other enhanced attribute at Sam's disposal, is not dependent on a yellow sun, since she was able withstand a brunt of Livewire's electric-based attacks and even serenely ignored a steadily rising voltage surging across her outstretched arm that the meta-human was directly trying to electrocute her with while Sam was holding Leslie fast by the neck, only finally breaking free from the world killers's grip once the energy that Livewire was amassing reach critical threshold and propelling both of them away to opposite directions. However, Sam's invulnerability as herself seems to be greatly mitigated until her Reign persona takes over, expressing itself only when inflicted with something that would otherwise be borderline detrimental or life-threatening (i.e. gunshot) which explains as to how Alex was able to draw blood from Sam via a syringe.
- Self-sustenance: Due to the effects of a yellow sun, Sam's physical needs are greatly reduced or completely removed. It is unknown if a yellow sun's absence voids this aspect of her powers.
- Atmospheric adaption: While Sam does require oxygen, her physicality allows her to survive while inhaling more harsh forms of it.
- Longevity: As a Kryptonian, Sam's lifespan is considerably longer than a normal human and likewise ages much slower.
- X-ray vision: Sam has the ability to see through objects; except for lead.
- Super breath: Sam is able to exhale powerful gusts of air from her mouth which are similar to force winds. She can also cause the temperature of her breath to drop, therefore able to freeze nearly anything. And after Imra telekinetically shielded her husband from Reign’s freezing breath, that inadvertently formed an ice dome around the Daxamite, it was seen that the ice she creates in this manner bear enough constitution to resist Mon-El’s yellow sun-enhanced repeated strikes when he hopelessly attempted to break out of the solidice-sphere encasing him and keeping him hopelessly in place.
- Super hearing: Sam has super-sensitive ears that can perfectly pick up sounds from miles away and even through structures.
- Super speed: Sam possesses the ability to move at super-sonic speeds, both through flight and on foot. Her speed seems greater than Supergirl’s, who despite being fast enough to intercept bullets, failed to evade the vast majority of Sam’s assaults, and even repeatedly outmaneuver the latter for the most part of their first battle.
- Super strength: On the day of the revelation of the Girl of Steel statue, after a mysterious attack by Bloodsport, in a moment of desperation to save her daughter, Ruby's life, Sam raised an iron bar with little effort. After her awakening, Sam's full strength was proven to be considerably greater than Supergirl’s, capable of feats like nearly overturning something as large as an oil tanker and punching away 31st Century artillery ordnance with apparent ease. While able to block some of Sam's blows, the repeated accumulation of hits that landed soon left Supergirl bleeding heavily and bruised all over, barely able to stand before finally falling into a coma and critical condition. It is unknown if Sam is stronger than Superman.
- World killer link: The world killers appear to have a link with each other using Reign as a nexus point. This is evident as no world killers awoke until Reign did. Julia/Purity does not have children so this did not inhibit the development of her powers like Reign and only woke after Reign did. Once Grace and Julia died there powers transferred to Sam.
- Sonic scream: After absorbing Julia’s powers, Sam can vocally emit a focused, high frequency sonic scream that is powerful enough to knock a fully grown Kryptonain feet away into a wall.
- Sonic inducement/Sound projection: With a slight clench of her hands, Sam, was able to induce vertigo, vibration, and a sonic sound in her immediate vicinity, extending outwards omni-directionally.
- Empathy: After absorbing Julia’s powers, Sam is able to "see" into people, and is able to read peoples personalities, and look deep into their psyches.
- Sonic scream: After absorbing Julia’s powers, Sam can vocally emit a focused, high frequency sonic scream that is powerful enough to knock a fully grown Kryptonain feet away into a wall.
- Pestilence inducement: After absorbing Pestilence power, Sam can spread some kind of contagious virus that can kill any living thing she comes into contact with as seen when dozens of pigeons fell dead from the sky, when people at city hall started having nose bleeds before collapsing and when a plant immediately died upon being touched. According to Mon-El, it is 100% fatal.
- Retractable claws: Possible after absobring Pestilence power, Sam can grow her nails into yellow claws, sharp and dense enough to pierce Supergirl's invulnerable skin, and presumably any other being. Her claws can also induce pestilence when she grows her nails upon physical contact. Her nails are retractable, and can reform to normal size.
- Evolution: After absorbing Pestilence power, Sam possible can "evolve" into more powerful and potent forms of herself, including turning into diseases and creating new ones. As shown in the 31st century, the former owner of this power Grace has evolved into most powerful known form of herself, Blight And it is possible Sam can do it too after obtaining the power from Grace.
- Psychic interdimentional travel: According to Lena Luthor, Reign is capable of travel psychically between dimensions, while Sam is awake, Reign is in the dark valley and vice versa.
- Accelerated healing factor: Sam's metabolism is tremendously enhanced by solar energy, allowing accelerated healing abilities and burning calories at a fast rate, making her practically immune to becoming overweight.
Abilities
- High-level intellect/Great business acumen: Sam is very intelligent, as she has enough business experience and knowledge to the point where Lena Luthor chose her as the acting CEO of L-Corp.[6] And from long prior to that, Samantha was already working as Junior VP of another company by the time she first became met Lena.[11]
- Intimidation: Sam as Reign is able to strike fear into the hearts of many humans like Morgan Edge and Thomas Coville, even the highly skilled and courageous top D.E.O. agent, Alex Danvers admitted she was terrified of her despite knowing practically little of the world killer. Even incredibly formidable meta-humans, like Psi and Livewire, would later join that long list of the fearful following Supergirl’s defeat at Reign’s hand, such that the former felt comfortable laying low in incarceration for her own safety (though ironically enough, it was later seen and confirmed that Psi’s psychic powers actually make her a significant threat against the powerful worldkiller) and the latter grudgingly trying to adapt back into an honest living, lest they be targeted by the worldkiller, and they both knew she will still come after them sooner or later; unsurprisingly, both empowered women from Earth were more than willing to join in when Supergirl, together with Imra Ardeen, assembled an all-female expedition to Fort Rozz with the aim of collecting intel on how to defeat Reign. Highlighting it all was Supergirl herself, who showed some hints of fearing for her own life after getting into an epic strife with Reign through National City, ultimately being put under the latter’s mercy.
- Multilingual: Sam is capable of fluently speaking English and after her awakening, Kryptonese as well.
- Expert combatant: Though not particularly acrobatic beyond her capacity of self-propelled flight, as Reign, Sam is a very capable unarmed combatant. Able to effectively combine her raw might into her battle tactics, she is shown able to land efficient and devastating blows that very few could defend against. Ultimately, she was able to fight on par with Supergirl, who received considerable combat training, able to block and counter many of her fellow Kryptonian’s blows while gradually wearing down Supergirl with her vicious strikes, even whilst soaring together with her in midair, until Supergirl was too winded and battered to fight back.
Weaknesses
- Split personality: Sam's full powers are not truly available to her own discretion. Apart from her invulnerability, only in moments of extreme stress can she access some of her other powers, and not at full capacity. Once her programming was awakened, as Reign, she has full access to her powers, but becomes completely unaware of it. Her separate persona as the world killer is completely void of all her past memories as Samantha and upon reverting to her normal-self, remains completely oblivious to all actions as Reign, apart from some vague memories emerging in dreams. The shift in personality seems to subtly occur, if not fully activate, whenever angered by wrongdoings going on, indicated by a dark expression rising from Sam’s face along with her eyes flashing an eerie red, and it would seem that both Reign and Sam are not entirely two separate entities forced into the same body, since the former presumably proceeded to enact the initiating "Mark of the Beast" step of the Kryptonian End of Days using Sam's in-depth knowledge of L-Corp and thus left her mark, the Juru "Low Speech" sigil, on several of the company’s property — which made Lena Luthor believe that, once again, Morgan Edge was behind it as only he would hold a grudge that personal enough to deface Lena that intensely without leaving a trace that would implicate him having a hand in it — and was quite comfortable sporting her emblazoned outfit beneath Sam's normal work clothes. Furthermore, Sam's conscience was momentarily forced to resurface after Psi struck Reign with a fear-inductive psionic assault, bringing out Sam’s worst fear of losing her daughter that briefly freed her from Reign’s control. Additionally, in spite of her tonal voice being distorted to prevent recognition, Reign's speech mannerisms seem to exhibit aspects of Earth's lingo (i.e. her use of "gonna" instead of "going to") due to having spent time alongside humans as Sam.
- Lead: Even with her X-ray vision, Sam cannot see through lead.
- Stunted power development: Due to becoming pregnant with a child before she fully developed through puberty, Sam's natural physiological development was stunted and her powers were not awoken until later than normally expected.[2]
- Kryptonite: Like all Kryptonians, even while empowered, Sam is vulnerable to the exposure of Kryptonite, a radioactive mineral from her home planet Krypton. Depending on the nature of the said Kryptonite, it will cause a different and adverse affect on her;
- Green Kryptonite: Green Kryptonite not only physically hurts Sam, but weakens her physical attributes, leaving her vulnerable to weapons and anything in general that can kill a normal human; presumably, if she is exposed to it severely for too long, it will kill her. Though she is more resistant than normal and "unaltered Kryptonians", exhibiting the ability to somatically force it out of her body, so more green kryptonite is required to weaken her. And even then, she retained functionality of her powers for the time it raged inside herself, ultimately neutralizing it from within.
- Red sun energy: Sam is powerless when exposed to the energy of a red sun. However, similar to Green Kryptonite, the said colored energy would appear to have a mitigated effect on her, since she was thrown back but otherwise retained her powers — not to mention most of their intensity — after getting exposed to a red sun grenade lobbed upon her by Alex.
- Selective empowerment: Sam as herself seems to have lesser access to the entirety of her world killer's side than Reign, making the former comparably weaker — only able to exhibit her Kryptonian world killer traits under very specific circumstances, such as getting shot, flattening the bullet that struck her in the process. At other times, however, Sam’s durability seemed about as frail as a human’s, as seen when she permitted Alex to draw some blood from a vein using the needle of a syringe that successfully pierced through the former’s skin. While technically a weakness, this limitation is also what allows Sam to pass as a regular human without inducing suspicion from even those close to her life.
- Telepathy: As seen on Fort Rozz when in battle with Psi, Sam was easily over powered when she used her telepathic powers against Sam.
Former weaknesses
- Solar energy depletion: Reign has stated her powers come from an unknown source and not from the sun which means she doesn't need the radiation originating from a yellow sun to use her powers, as was evident when she maintained access to them despite travelling once to a star system that revolves around a blue sun — which typically has the same effect as a red sun, robbing normal Kryptonians of their yellow sun-enhanced capabilities.
