"Schott Through the Heart" is the fourteenth episode of the third season of Supergirl, and the fifty-sixth episode overall. It aired on April 16, 2018.
Synopsis
When Winn's father dies, his estranged mother, Mary, reappears trying to reconnect and to explain why she abandoned him all those years ago. Winn is too embittered from his rough childhood to forgive her but when a copycat Toyman attacks, the two must work together to stop him. Mon-El tells Kara something important about the Worldkillers, and Alex becomes suspicious of M'yrnn's recent behavior.[1]
Trivia
- The episode title is a play on lyrics from the 1986 Bon Jovi song "You Give Love A Bad Name".
- The title is a pun on the phrase "shot through the heart", which is also the first line of Bon Jovi's first #1 hit, "You Give Love a Bad Name". It was previously mentioned in "Legion of Super-Heroes" that after a catastrophic extinction of life and culture in the future, Bon Jovi's music was one of numerous things in Earth's history which Mon-El told The Legion.
- For karaoke, Kara sings "Intergalactic" by the Beastie Boys, James sings his actor's own song, "Tears Away", Alex sings "I Drove All Night", Mon-El sings "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas and Winn sings "Take On Me" by A-ha.
- Winslow Schott Sr. makes use of mechanized flying monkeys to send a message to Mary, referencing those in L. Frank Baum's Oz series. James alternatively suggests the big one to be a Wicked Witch.
- Mary refers to Jacqueline Nimball as "Buffalo Bill". Buffalo Bill was the name of the serial killer in the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs who captured females and skinned them. Nimball's actress, Brooke Smith, portrayed Catherine Martin, one of those victims.
- Winn refers to the miniature cars with flamethrowers chasing he and James as "literal Hot Wheels".
- When Supergirl is packaged into life-size toy packaging, the series' actual logo is used.
- When Winn tells his mother that he's there to rescue her, she tells him to not "Luke Skywalker" her, referencing a scene involving the character of the same name in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.
