Batwoman was renewed for a second season by The CW on January 7, 2020.[2] The shift to January was a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic affecting production. On October 29th, 2020, it was announced that Season 2 would premiere on January 17th, 2021.[1]

Confirmed plot points

  • There will be a crossover episode with Superman & Lois.[10]
  • The new character, who will take the mantle of Batwoman, will be inspired by the original but won't be necessarily the best person for the job at the beginning.[11]
  • The Batmobile will appear.[12]

Confirmed characters

  • Ryan Wilder: A likable, messy, little goofy and untamed woman who's nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter; highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. She is an out lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate, fallible and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.[4]
  • The Whisper: She is a skilled assassin, unflappable and cold as ice in the face of danger. She is one of Safiyah’s most important henchwomen and still harbors feelings for her powerful boss.[8]
  • Safiyah Sohail: The fiercely protective ruler of a small community on the island of Coryana with as many enemies as aliases. She is compassionate and charismatic with both physical and psychological prowess. She is beloved by her people and will stop at nothing to protect what’s hers. No one goes unnoticed by Safiyah, specifically when it comes to those who have encountered the Desert Rose.[7]
  • Ocean: A zen gardener and thinker with a complicated past. A loyal soldier and fighter, Ocean moves to Gotham looking for a new beginning.[8]
  • Victor Zsasz: A charismatic, skilled hitman with high, unpredictable energy. He proudly carves tally marks onto his skin for every victim he kills.[9]

Episodes

Production

  • On May 19, Ruby Rose announced her departure from the series just two days after the conclusion of the first season finale, "O, Mouse!". It was initially reported that the role of Kate Kane would be recast.[14] However on June 2, it was announced that an entirely new character would be introduced to replace Rose's character as Batwoman.[3][11] By July 8, Javicia Leslie was hired.[4]
  • Production began on September 3, 2020, but Leslie's first day began a day later. In a welcome back video with Nicole Kang (Mary Hamilton) and Camrus Johnson (Luke Fox), Johnson reassured fans, "We're safe, we're distanced, people are wearing masks, everything's fine!".[15]
    • However, production shut down on September 30 due to delays in processing COVID-19 tests in British Columbia, though the stoppage is assumed to be temporary.[16]
    • On October 7, 2020, production was allowed to resume.[17]
