The Flash was renewed for a fifth season by The CW on April 2, 2018. It premiered on October 9, 2018, and concluded on May 14, 2019. The season consisted of 22 episodes.

Synopsis

Matching wits with The Thinker, who by season's end had harnessed the powers of all twelve bus metas he created, stretched Team Flash to their limits, but with the help of some new allies, Barry Allen (aka The Flash) and company were able to put a stop to the Enlightenment and save Central City once again.

However, with the arrival of Barry and Iris' speedster daughter, Nora, who arrived from the future admitting to having made a "big mistake", things are anything but status quo. Will parenthood be the challenge that finally slows The Flash down?^[1]

In the 100th episode, Barry and Team Flash come up with a plan to stop Cicada. However, the plan calls for Barry and Nora to travel back in time to gather some key necessities. Meanwhile, Sherloque takes his concerns about Nora to Iris, and Caitlin turns up a key asset in the fight against Cicada.

When Barry Allen and Oliver Queen wake up one morning and realize they have swapped bodies with each other, the two set off to find out what disturbed the timeline to cause such a shift. Barry and Oliver realize they need Supergirl's help and travel to Smallville on Earth-38 where they end up meeting Kara's cousin, Clark Kent, and intrepid reporter, Lois Lane.

Barry and Iris go in after their daughter and Iris is brokenhearted by what she finds. Meanwhile, Ralph tricks Cisco into going out for a night out on the town.

Barry and Ralph must go undercover as criminals in an illegal black market to purchase a device that could help them stop Cicada. Meanwhile, Iris investigates a lead on Cicada's whereabouts and ends up in a dangerous situation.

Team Flash finds out that a suburban mom named Vickie Bolen is in danger and they race to save her. Upon meeting her, they discover she's a meta-human who is hiding her abilities from her family. Barry encourages Vickie to share her secret with her family, which makes Nora realize she needs to come clean with her parents about Thawne.

Trivia

This was the last season of The Flash to have Todd Helbing as the showrunner. He was replaced by Eric Wallace in the next season.^[2]
This was the first season of The Flash:
- To have two main antagonists, Orlin Dwyer and Grace Gibbons. They both shared the same moniker "Cicada" and the same mission.
- To have a female main antagonist.
- To have 22 episodes; all previous seasons consisted of 23 episodes.
- To not feature Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/Captain Cold/Leo Snart) in any capacity.
- Where Emily Bett Rickards didn't reprise her Arrowverse role of Felicity Smoak.
- To not feature Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon/Vibe) in every episode.
- To not feature Violett Beane (Jesse Wells/Jesse Quick) and John Wesley Shipp (Jay Garrick/The Flash) since their introduction in Season 2.
This was the only season of The Flash to feature Jessica Parker Kennedy and Chris Klein as series regulars.
Before the season started, Wally West was confirmed to appear in three episodes.^[3] However, he only appeared in "Nora" and "What's Past is Prologue".
