"The reason you beat Zoom, Godspeed, Thawne, is because speed isn't what drives you, it's love. That's your true force and there is nothing artificial about that. "

The Flash was renewed for a sixth season by The CW on January 31, 2019.[1] It premiered on October 8, 2019 and concluded on May 12, 2020. The season was originally going to consist of 22 episodes.[2] However, only 20 were produced[3] due to production shutting down indefinitely on March 13, 2020, due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.[4] On April 20, 2020, it was revealed that only 19 out of the produced 20 episodes would be aired.[5]

Production

  • Executive producer Eric Wallace took over as the sole showrunner this season due to Todd Helbing stepping down from the position at the end of last season to focus on the development of Superman & Lois.[6]
  • On March 13, 2020, it was reported that the production of the season had been shut down until further notice due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.[4] As a result, only 20 out of the planned 22 episodes were produced.[3]
    • On March 26, 2020, it was reported that the season would go on hiatus after "All's Wells That Ends Wells" with the hope that the final 2 episodes will be produced and aired later in 2020.[7]
    • On April 20, 2020, Grant Gustin revealed that the season's new finale will be "Success Is Assured" and that it sets up a different cliffhanger for next season than originally planned.[5]
    • On May 13, 2020, showrunner Eric Wallace revealed that the last three episodes of this season (episodes 20, 21, and 22), that weren't produced and aired due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, will become the first three episodes of next season.[8]

Trivia

  • Season 6 marks main cast members LaMonica Garett, Efrat Dor's sole, first and last respectively. In addition, they were only credited for their respective episode appearances.
  • Hartley Sawyer was fired on June 8, 2020 for racist and misogynistic comments he made on his now-deleted Twitter account prior to joining The Flash. Black Lives Matter protests in response to the death of George Floyd were taking place at the time of his firing. Showrunner Eric Wallace, an African-American, released a statement saying he was heartbroken and promised a permanent change in the show's work environment going forward.[9]
  • The first half of the season was called "Blood and Truth".[10]
  • This is the first season of The Flash:
    • To not feature Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/Frost) in every episode due to her pregnancy.[11]
    • To have less than 20 episodes.
    • To have a main cast member (Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon)) absent in the season finale.
    • To not have the main antagonist presumed killed or otherwise defeated.
    • To not have an introduction at the beginning of any episode.
  • This is the shortest season of The Flash with a total of 19 episodes.[5]
  • The original season finale, episode 22, would've had a "big Thawne cliffhanger".[5]
  • Just like last season, before this season started, Wally West was confirmed to appear in multiple episodes.[12] However, he only appeared in "Death of the Speed Force".
    • However it is possible that Wally could have been slated to appear in some of the episodes which were un-produced and moved to Season 7 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
