The Flash was renewed for an eighth season by The CW on February 3, 2021.[4] It will premiere on November 16, 2021.[1]

  • This season will start with a special "five-episode event" that will feature different heroes and villains from across the Arrowverse and have a crossover-type feel.[2][9]
  • One of the new villains this season will be "the biggest and most powerful villain the Flash has yet faced" and will appear early in the season.[11]
    • He comes from the world of horror and the supernatural.[12]
  • Villains from the previous seven seasons will return in unexpected ways to make Barry and Iris' life "a living nightmare."[11]
  • Bart Allen, Nora West-Allen, Sue Dearbon, and Jay Garrick will return.[14][15][16]
  • Iris will have "many exciting things to deal with" as a journalist.[14]
  • Iris' "time sickness" will be addressed and clarified after Armageddon.[12][17]
    • Solving Iris' "time sickness" will be huge part of the entire season and have big ramifications for Barry and Iris' relationship and marriage.[17]
  • This season will feature some unexpected, special guest stars.[12]
  • Barry will become similar to the Flash from the comic books—a confident, incredibly powerful, and secure team leader.[12]
  • A few more relationships will blossom.[12]
  • The first few episodes of the season will further examine Kristen Kramer.[12]
  • Another new villain will force Team Flash to face their mortality in a highly personal and ultimately terrifying way.[18]
  • Joe West is "going to get an incredibly different perspective on life, and it will lead him to a really big choice."[19]
  • Eddie Thawne will return in a flashback episode that will air after Armageddon.[20]
  • Barry's The Flash suit will include gold boots, similar to the ones seen in the comic books.[21]

Confirmed new characters

  • Despero: A powerful and intelligent alien possessing incredible telepathic powers who left his homeworld—Kalanor—under mysterious circumstances. Now he's facing a deadly mission on Earth, one whose outcome will decide the fate of humankind and put him on a collision course with Team Flash.[8]

  • The season began production on August 16, 2021 and is expected to wrap on April 25, 2022.[25]

Trivia

  • This will be the first season of The Flash:
    • To not feature Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon) and Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells and Eobard Thawne) as series regulars.[5]
    • To premiere with a crossover event (Armageddon).
    • To not have most of its episodes air on a Tuesday.[3]
    • This season will mark the first time that two seasons of The Flash(the CW) have premiered in the same year.
