- "For 20 years, I've been biting my tongue, masquerading as one of you while my culture has been forced into the shadows, deemed unworthy!"
- —Selena's hologram to Alura Zor-El[src]
Selena is a former member of the High Council of Argo and the high priestess of the Children of Juru. Selena was aligned with her late "daughter," Reign, also serving as a hologram that instructed and aided her in the Fortress of Sanctuary in her mission to cleanse the Earth of sin and prepare it for New Krypton. Following her and the coven's failed attempt to terraform Earth, Selena and her accomplices were taken back to Argo City by Alura Zor-El to face justice for their crimes.
Biography[]
Original multiverse[]
Early life[]
On Krypton, Selena was a member of the Children of Juru, a coven dedicated to creating "New Krypton" where the old polytheistic deities would be worshipped, including Yuda Kal. For this purpose, the coven created three Worldkillers using advanced genetic engineering and dark magic. When Krypton died, Selena was one of the few survivors of the coven and lived on Argo City, waiting for the Worldkillers, who were sent to Earth, to awaken.
Helping Supergirl[]
When Supergirl needed a special black rock in order to defeat Reign, she met with her mother and the High Council of Argo in order to obtain it. At first, Selena seemed hesitant to give Kara what she wanted, but after hearing her speech and how Earth needed her help desperately, Selena decided to give Supergirl what she wanted.
She gives Kara the black rock and watches as she boards her ship to go back to Earth. Later, Selena dons her black cloak and performs a ritual to summon Reign, allowing the latter to break out of the prison Lena Luthor built.[1]
Making Earth into New Krypton[]
Selena, Ayala and Vita stole Supergirl's ship and journeyed to Earth. They met Thomas Coville, who gave Selena a beacon to give rise to the Fortress of Sanctuary.[2]
At the Fortress of Sanctuary, they reflected on the prophecy of the Worldkillers, which brought them to Earth, and the fact that the Earth's yellow sun granted them extraordinary powers. When they began the ritual to summon Reign, the Harun-El needed to resurrect the Worldkiller burned Ayala's hand since the Earth's atmosphere made it toxic to Kryptonians, so Coville offered to act out the ritual for them. The ceremony progressed with Coville holding the Harun-El over the flames. However, they noticed that Reign was unformed as she lacked the bloodline of her deceased sisters. Coville directed them to the D.E.O., where they would find the blood samples of Purity and Pestilence.
Selena, Vita, and Ayala attacked the D.E.O. headquarters, demanding the blood of Pestilence and Purity. Alex Danvers shot an electrical net at the trio, trapping them until Selena used her heat vision to deactivate it. Selena instructed Vita and Ayala to find the blood samples and the two flew off. The three priestesses regrouped and killed Demos with their heat vision as he gave the blood samples to Supergirl. Selena caught the blood samples as Supergirl tried to burn them in the air and Vita created a bright blink of light for them to escape.
When they returned to the Fortress of Sanctuary, Selena added the blood of the two deceased Worldkillers into the pit of flames. The figure of lava began to take shape and morphed into Reign. A resurrected Reign stood up, grabbing the Sword of Juru from the ground, and greeted the priestesses. Coville threw the Harun-El into the pit, which caused it to grow in size, creating an entrance into Earth's core. The trio then concluded that they had no need for Coville anymore and Selena injured him with her heat vision. Reign flew into the portal to terraform Earth, beginning the transition into New Krypton.[3]
Capture[]
When Supergirl and her team appears in the fortress while they just finish to re-create Reign, she fought the Superfriends and was handcuffed by them before being knocked out. After Reign's death, she was taken with her allies to stand trial in Argo City.[4]
Anti-Monitor Crisis[]
During the Anti-Monitor Crisis, Selena as well as everyone in the multiverse except for the seven Paragons, was killed when Argo City was consumed and destroyed, in an antimatter wave by the Anti-Monitor on December 10, 2019,[5] only to be restored a month later, after the Paragons and the Spectre created a new universe.[6]
New multiverse[]
In the new earth, Selena's story remains the same. She was also mistaken for her Earth-TUD17 doppelganger.[7]
Personality[]
Selena is described as calm, yet mysterious. When hearing Kara's speech for seeking her aid, she had conflicting feelings about whether or not she should help by giving away a piece of the valuable Harun-El. After prolonged thinking, Selena ultimately agreed when Kara confirmed the rock would help defeat Reign and save Earth, her adopted home planet.
However, this turns out to be a facade as Selena is actually a dark, traitorous, manipulative, sociopathic and sadistic being who despises having to live on Argo City and worship Rao. She is bitter about her own culture being pushed aside and essentially erased from existence. Selena aspires to create a new world with the old Kryptonian deities, no matter the cost; she wanted to completely terraform Earth and commit genocide on its inhabitants with no regard for the innocent lives caught in the crossfire. She disdains humans, seeing herself as above them and deeming humanity in general as weak. Selena doesn't seem to have much loyalty for her supposed allies either; she had Reign murder Jindah Kol Rozz in an attempt to protect the Worldkillers' secrets, left Felra behind on Argo City to create a distraction and murdered Thomas Coville once he was no longer useful. Due to Alura Zor-El's inaction that led to Krypton's destruction, Selena also hates the House of El.
In regard to the Worldkillers, Selena views them as her "daughters," even though it's abundantly clear they're only expendable weapons to use for her own ends (at least with Purity and Pestilence). She has no moral limits when ensuring they awaken and fulfill their purpose. For example, Selena deliberately forced the Worldkiller personas on the unwilling Julia Freeman and Samantha Arias, knowing full well it would kill them. She even tried to have Reign murder Samantha's daughter, Ruby, in an attempt to sever Samantha's connection to her humanity. This seemed to be partly motivated out of her own feelings as well since Selena coldly views Ruby as an "error" that prevented her plan of awakening Reign sooner.
Powers and abilities[]
Powers[]
- Kryptonian dark magic: Selena is adept in manipulating dark mystical forces. Since Selena is a devoted follower of Yuda Kal, she has various spells and abilities, as she is presumably one of the lead Kryptonian Witches.
- Power imbuing: Selena was one of the many who helped genetically engineer and enchant Reign and the other three deceased Worldkillers. She is shown to be very skilled in the aspect of dark magic, as she was able to strengthen Reign to allow her to escape, even from the vast distance between Argo and Earth. As the dark priestess, she is presumably the most powerful Kryptonian magic user.
- Kryptonian physiology: Normally, like all Kryptonians, Selena's capabilities were no greater than a normal human of her physical conditioning. However, if she had been charged by the energy of a yellow sun and metabolized into her body, she would have become able to perform various inhuman feats.
- Solar energy absorption: While Selena's powers are dependent on the energy spectrum from a yellow sun, her body is able to constantly and passively absorb such energy while exposed to it, essentially keeping her reserves fully charged near-constantly. Direct exposure to the light of a yellow sun will also accelerate her recovery from any injuries she does manage to sustain.
- Accelerated healing factor: While under the effects of the yellow sun, Selena's metabolism is tremendously enhanced by solar energy, giving her accelerated healing abilities and allowing her to burn calories at a superhuman rate, making her practically immune to becoming fat or obese.
- Contaminant immunity: Selena has an immunity to all forms of disease and contaminants on Earth.
- Flight: Selena is able to manipulate her own gravitational field to generate thrust and propel herself through the air, often at hypersonic speeds that are much faster than she can travel by foot. As such, she is able to levitate and fly past Earth's atmosphere and near the planet's orbit.
- Sleep flight: Selena has the ability to float in the air thanks to her ability to fly while she sleeps, or as a voluntary act.
- Levitation: Selena can levitate using her flight abilities.
- Heat vision: Selena can emit blue energy beams of intense heat from her eyes.
- Invulnerability: Selena is essentially invulnerable to all Earthly weapons, with bullets simply ricocheting whenever they come into contact with her skin.
- Extreme heat resistance: Selena feels no pain when exposed to extreme heat.
- Elemental resistance: Selena feels no pain when exposed to harmful elements like rocks, fire, electricity and ice.
- Self-sustenance: Due to the effects of a yellow sun, Selena's physical needs are greatly reduced or completely removed.
- Atmospheric adaption: While Selena does require oxygen, her physicality allows her to survive while inhaling more harsh forms of it, or even no oxygen at all.
- Longevity: As a Kryptonian, Selena's life span is considerably longer than a normal human and likewise ages much slower.
- Super breath: Selena is able to exhale powerful gusts of air from her mouth which are similar to force winds. She can also cause the temperature of her breath to drop, thereby making her able to freeze nearly anything.
- Super inhalation: Selena can reverse the effects of her super breath in order to suck in gaseous substances, including those that would otherwise be harmful to humans.
- Super hearing: Selena has super-sensitive ears that can perfectly pick up sounds from miles away and even through structures.
- Super speed: Selena possesses the ability to move at hyper-sonic speeds, both through flight and on foot.
- Accelerated perception: Selena sees everything much slower allowing her to move with precision and accuracy within very fast moments.
- Super strength: Selena's strength is enhanced under a yellow sun, enough to easily kill a normal human if she were to attack them directly.
- Thunderclap: When Selena uses her super strength to clap her hands together, it creates a powerful shockwave that throws enemies back. It also destroy glass, pushes objects away from her and disorients anyone nearby.
- Super leaping: Selena is able to jump several stories in a single bound without having to fly.
- Super stamina: Selena can run, fight or fly for long periods of time, without getting tired.
- Super reflexes: Selena's reflexes are so fast, she can respond to attacks within seconds.
- Super vision: Selena's vision is greatly enhanced under a yellow sun.
- Electromagnetic spectrum vision: As a Kryptonian, Selena can see well into most of the electromagnetic spectrum. She can see and identify radio and television signals as well as all other broadcast or transmitted frequencies. Using this ability, she can avoid detection by radar or satellite monitoring methods.
- Microscopic vision: Selena has achieved the ability to see extremely small objects down to the atomic level, and magnify objects for her eyes to see.
- Telescopic vision: Selena possesses the ability to see something at a great distance, without violating the laws of physics. Though limited, the exact extent of the ability is undetermined. it is similar to the zoom lens on a camera.
- X-ray vision: Selena has the ability to see through objects; except for lead.
- Infrared thermal vision: Selena has the ability to see heat and cold signatures of people and other objects. Reign can also see with better acuity in darkness, and to a degree in total darkness.
- Telepathy immunity: Selena is immune to most forms of telepathic powers, even from someone as powerful as J'onn J'onzz.
- Accelerated healing factor: While under the effects of the yellow sun, Selena's metabolism is tremendously enhanced by solar energy, giving her accelerated healing abilities and allowing her to burn calories at a superhuman rate, making her practically immune to becoming fat or obese.
Abilities[]
- Expert Kryptonian historian: Selena was said to have such a vast knowledge of Krypton, and every aspect of its history, including the times before Rao, that the Kryptonian scientists modeled the Fortress of Sanctuary hologram A.I. after her, and even imbued it with her brainwave patterns and knowledge of Krypton.
- Multilingual: Selena is fluent in English and Kryptonese.

Behind the scenes[]
- In the DC Comics, the witch Selena is a character originally created for the 1984 Supergirl movie, famously portrayed by Faye Dunaway. The major difference between those iterations is that Selena from the movie is a human witch from Earth, while Selena from TV series is a Kryptonian; both of them use magical spells for nefarious schemes, although the movie version of her doesn't have superhuman powers, whereas the TV version has those powers.
- This version of the character is based on the "DC Rebirth" adaptation of the movie character.
