Well, by now it is known that she is unfortumnately getting killed off and replaced rather than recasted, but about examples of recasting, I can name a few. recast

When they announce they'll be recasting the role for season 2, do they mean they'll be recasting Kate Kane, or possibly introducing an alternate name for Batwoman to explain the difference in appearance?

Looking at the disambiguations listed at w:c:DC:Batwoman it seems there are the following fifteen precedents:

  1. Stephanie Brown
  2. Bryce Wayne
  3. Carrie Kelley
  4. Barbara Gordon
  5. Selina Kyle
  6. Brenna Wayne
  7. Bette Kane
  8. Cassandra Cain
  9. Elainna Grayson
  10. Helena Wayne
  11. Kathy Duquesne
  12. Rocky Ballantine
  13. Sonia Alcana
  14. Katrina Moldoff
  15. Julia Pennyworth

Or maybe they go outside precedent and find an entirely new character (perhaps preexisting in the Arrowverse) to do it?

Arrow lasted two episodes past it's namesake's absence, and we've also seem a couple times where the namesake was filled in for (John for Oliver) not to mention the Canary role exchanging hands. Perhaps this could happen with the Batwoman mantle?

Another option is that it remains Kate Kane and they use the already-existing "face swap" plotline to explain why she would look different. Or else could there still be echoes of the Crisis that might cause the role to be recast? Tycio (talk) 17:30, May 26, 2020 (UTC)

It will obviously still be Kate Kane. A recast is one thing but completely changing the storyline to revolve around a different character is something that they are definitely not gonna do.Ninja72 (talk) 17:47, May 26, 2020 (UTC)
They are going recast a new actress for the role of Kate Kane, Ruby Rose is leaving the show and is done playing Kate Kane. To explain why Kate is going to look different will probably be that Crisis changed her appearance.--Typhuss999 (talk) 17:52, May 26, 2020 (UTC)
That wouldn't work. Crisis is already over.Ninja72 (talk) 00:42, May 27, 2020 (UTC)
Well how would they explain it then?. It won't make sense. Unless, the Kate Kane from season 1 wasn't Kate at all and the one coming in season 2 is the real Kate Kane.--Typhuss999 (talk) 01:02, May 27, 2020 (UTC)
They probably would not explain it all. Recasts typically do not have in-universe explanations.Ninja72 (talk) 00:13, June 2, 2020 (UTC)
Well that's dumb, how it would make sense then, it has to be explained somehow.--Typhuss999 (talk) 00:17, June 2, 2020 (UTC)
It does not have to be explained. She would have just always looked like that in-universe. This is how recasts are typically done.Ninja72 (talk) 22:43, June 3, 2020 (UTC)
Really, ok.--Typhuss999 (talk) 22:45, June 3, 2020 (UTC)

As a follow-up does anyone know any other examples of recasting within the arrowverse? I'm pretty sure I remember it happening but I can't remember a specific example. I think this would definitely be the highest-profile recast though.

Closest I can think is Jim Corrigan vs Jim Corrigan (Purgatory) but that was on two different shows and a five-year gap between the recast. Going s1 to s2 with a new actress in the MAIN role and pretending it's the same character seems weird no matter how close a resemblance you can manage.
