"What's Past is Prologue" is the eighth episode of the fifth season of The Flash, and the one-hundredth episode overall. It aired on December 4, 2018.

Synopsis

In the 100th episode, Barry and Team Flash come up with a plan to stop Cicada. However, the plan calls for Barry and Nora to travel back in time to gather some key necessities. However, Barry hesitates, concerned about his daughter seeing certain parts of his life. Meanwhile, Sherloque takes his concerns about Nora to Iris, and Caitlin turns up a key asset in the fight against Cicada.

Trivia

• The episode's title is a reference to an infamous line from the William Shakespeare play The Tempest.
• Sherloque and Thawne compliment Nora as a "Clever girl". This is a famous line from Jurassic Park.
• Despite being credited in this episode, LaMonica Garrett only appeared in the final scene that served as a teaser to the Elseworlds crossover.
  • The teaser was reused from the Supergirl episode "Bunker Hill", and the Arrow episode "Unmasked".
• Eobard mistakenly refers to Nora as "Dawn", a reference to Dawn Allen, Barry's daughter in the comics in the New Earth timeline (Nora being from the Prime Earth one).
• Eobard revealed that he has encountered Savitar as he has already see his face to make fun of it.
• At one point, Gideon was about to say that Nora is the fifth recruit of the Legion of something before Barry interrupted her. This is a reference to "The Trap", when Gideon was about to say that Barry is the founder of something before he interrupted her.
• Barry tells Nora why Wells AKA Thawne killed his Mother in the context as he was told by the Reverse Flash in Fast Enough, this was a favourite episode of Grant Gustin's.
• Ralph plays the Huey Lewis and the News song "Back in Time" as Barry and Nora time travel into the past.
• The times Barry and Nora traveled to are from the following episodes:
  • Season 3's "Finish Line".
  • Season 2's "Versus Zoom".
  • Season 1's "The Sound and the Fury" (also season 2's "Flash Back" as concurrent events, though their traveling to this time happened by accident), and "Pilot" (as well as flashback scenes set during that episode from Season 4's "Therefore I Am" and Season 1's "Things You Can't Outrun" and "The Nuclear Man".)
• The fact that Nora and Barry unintentionally attract a Time Wraith's attention when they arrive in May 2017 may be a reference to Barry's encounter with one due to his trip to the past in Season 2's "Flash Back".

When Iris shot Savitar in Season 3 finish line, he was laying face up: in this episode he was face down.
