"People always fear what they don't understand, and that fear turns them into monsters. But we can't let it turn us into monsters, too. We have to be better than them."
—Zari Tomaz[src]

Zari Adrianna Tomaz[1] (born c. 2009/2010[2] as Zari Adrianna Tarazi) also known as Z to her friends, Khaahar to her brother, and Zari 1.0 in the current timeline[3], is a computer hacker, time traveler, and former member of the Legends. She is the daughter of an unnamed man and Nasreen Tarazi, the older sister of Behrad Tarazi, and the girlfriend of Nate Heywood.

Zari was an anti-government hacker who fought against the organization A.R.G.U.S. in the year 2042 alongside her brother, Behrad, until he was killed. When she first encountered the Legends, Zari tricked them into helping her retrieve Behrad's totem back from an A.R.G.U.S. black site. Zari eventually apologized and agreed to join the Legends as a full-time member.

The creation of Heyworld caused the Anti-Meta-human Act of 2021 to never pass, which changed Zari's past. She was unaffected by the changes to the timeline until she left the temporal zone, sacrificing her time and memories with the Legends, in order to help save Nate's life.[2]

Eventually, Zari was able to come back after the creation of "Loomworld", after she took over the body of the version of herself from the current timeline. Charlie later ripped Zari's life thread in half, giving a physical body to both versions of Zari.[3] However, in an effort to keep Behrad from dying again, she decided to return to the Air Totem.[4]

After Tarazi realized how much Zari missed Behrad, she visited Zari in the World between worlds and told Zari about her plan to temporarily swap places so they could both spend some time with Behrad.[5] During her time outside of the totem, Zari noticed some problems with her relathionship with Nate, but Nate assured her that everything would be fine and that they would save their relationship.[6]

Zari later helped the Legends deal with a robot of J. Edgar Hoover, asked Nate if would move into the Air Totem with her[7], and bonded with Gwyn Davies. Before Zari returned to the totem, Nate told her that he would move into it with her. She left the Legends when Nate moved into the Air Totem.[8]

Young Zari and her mother

Young Zari and her mother.

Zari Tomaz was born around 2009 or 2010[2] to Nasreen Tomaz and an unnamed man. She grew up in a Muslim family and lived in Washington, D.C..[9] When Zari was young, she refused to participate in the fasting of Ramadan, despite her mother's efforts. Nonetheless, Zari was taught by Nasreen how to cook Iftar and grew to understand the importance of family whilst celebrating Ramadan.[10] In 2018, Zari was taken out to a park by her mother, where they played together on the swing set.[9]

In early 2020, Zari and her family moved to Seattle, Washington, shortly after the birth of her younger brother, Behrad, to whom she was very close.[11] Zari disliked other children because they would tease her.[2]

In 2021, A.R.G.U.S. began taking control over the United States and instituted a dictatorship, including banning all religion and meta-humans. As a result, Zari and her family were persecuted for practicing Islam. Together with Behrad, Zari became part of the resistance in adulthood, fighting against A.R.G.U.S.'s control of her home.[11]

Working with the Legends[]

One night in 2042, A.R.G.U.S. raided Zari's family's home, killing Behrad and confiscating his totem. Zari and her parents were forced to flee and began living in a remote camp.

Sometime later, Zari was captured by A.R.G.U.S. during an attempt to take back her brother's amulet. As they were transporting her to a prison facility, the truck was stopped by Kuasa, giving Zari time to escape before the former could kill her.

Zari made her way to a hideout to gather supplies, where she was found by the Legends. An A.R.G.U.S. drone found them, but Zari was able to hack it, allowing her to escape. She headed to a bar, where she was intercepted by Mick Rory, attempting to befriend her. They were interrupted by Kuasa, who was fighting Sara Lance. Rory quickly caused a diversion, allowing them to escape and return to the Legends' timeship, the Waverider. Zari agreed to help them capture Kuasa, only on the provision that they help her rescue her brother from an A.R.G.U.S. black site. They infiltrated the site and as all of the inmates escaped, triggered by Jax, Zari went to retrieve an amulet. She admitted to the Legends that she'd played them, but only as the amulet had been her brother's. She went outside, using the amulet to fly away.

Zari made her way to her family's camp, followed by the Atom, but found it to be completely destroyed and them not there. Suddenly, Kuasa arrived. Working together, Ray and Zari were able to incapacitate Kuasa, allowing them to run away, but she stopped them in her tracks again. However, the Legends suddenly appeared, providing backup, forcing Kuasa to withdraw.[11]

Joining the Legends[]

They returned Zari to her hideout, where Rory and Amaya Jiwe convinced her to join the Legends. Amaya explained that Zari's amulet was in fact a totem, similar to her own. She offered to teach Zari how to use her powers, which the latter accepted.[11]

On the Waverider, Ray tried to have a team-building routine in honor of Zari joining the group, which she thought was pointless. She then watched Ray disappear in front of her which was a result of him dying in 1988. When the team prepared to travel back to save him, she was excited to actually time travel. They went back to 1988 and she suffered some side effects from the trip as she began speaking French as Ray reappeared. Zari was amazed at how different the world was in 1988 as opposed to 2042. They found young Ray Palmer and followed him to his home where they learned that Ray had a small Dominator in his bedroom. Zari was told all about the team's last encounter with the Dominators and they made a plan to sneak into Ray's room the following day to take the alien back.

The two found the Dominator named Gumball, but found that young Ray was still home and was heading back to the room. Zari hid under Ray's bed while Ray shrunk down. She then watched as young Ray took the Dominator to watch Singin' in the Rain. Suddenly, Ray's mother, Sandy Palmer, arrived home after being informed of Ray skipping school. Zari became nervous when Sandy was close to discovering Gumball and asked for a distraction. When young Ray took Gumball and grown-up Ray into his bag to run, she went after him but he accused her of only wanting Gumball and ran away from her. She tried to go after him but she lost him in the woods. She then found him in a small tent that he made where he role-played being Sir Galahad. She didn't want to play pretend with him but Ray told her that she had to think like a kid to get through to him and played along. Young Ray finally came out with Gumball but they were then ambushed by Smith and his agents.

Zari was rescued by Ray and the duo saved young Ray and Gumball. When escaping from the agents she used her totem to transport herself and little Ray in the sky. They eventually made it to the other Legends and the Dominator queen, who was reunited with her child. Later on, Zari convinced little Ray to go trick-or-treating with her and the other Legends, though she was not a fan of the costume she was wearing. Later on, Zari bonded with adult Ray by giving his team-building exercise a go and the two watched Singin' in the Rain together while eating Halloween candy.[12]

Zari went to eat breakfast with Sara, Amaya, and Martin Stein, though she was surprised at their simple choices to eat when they could have any food they wanted. As she had gone through life on meager rations, Zari told them that from now on, she would "eat like a queen". She then asked if the Legends could take the Waverider to 2041, as that was the year that her brother had been killed so that she could try and save him from A.R.G.U.S.. However, Sara and Amaya protested that Zari's mission could create unforeseen consequences to the timeline. Before she could try to argue more, Nate Heywood called the team to the bridge. There, he explained how one of the outlying anachronisms was in 2042, where they had met Zari. He found another in Victorian London that seemed to be a series of vampire attacks.

Zari was in her room cleaning when she was approached by Amaya. Amaya wanted to talk with her about her totem, but Zari was short with her about it. When Amaya pointed out that it was her brother's legacy, Zari angrily expressed how she didn't want to talk about her brother, especially when she and the other Legends were claiming that she couldn't save him even though she now had a chance to. This ignited her totem, which seemed to resonate with Amaya's. Amaya explained that the reason she hadn't returned to Zambesi was that the two of them were connected. The two then went to the bridge, where Zari met Rip Hunter. Rip Hunter explained to the Legends that he was on the hunt for an evil being by the name of Mallus and the vampire attacks were connected to him.

When Nate had been kidnapped by Sir Henry Stein, Zari went with the team to infiltrate the Order of the Shrouded Compass and rescue him, as well as find the rogue vampire. She infiltrated the club with the team and she was asked to sit for a séance with "Madame Eleanor". Zari's disbelief was evident to Eleanor, who admitted that she too was a skeptic before realizing her power. "Elanor" then went into a trance and Zari heard her speak out in her brother's voice. Zari then heard her younger brother say that it was her fault that he died as she didn't protect him and had run away. Zari tearfully tried to plead to her brother but Amaya broke the séance up. Back at the ship, Zari confessed to Amaya that she did indeed run and left her brother to be killed by A.R.G.U.S. She also didn't want her totem anymore as it was a reminder that she should've died that day, not her brother.[13]

Helen escapes with the Legends

Helen escapes with the Legends.

Nate worked on finding an anachronism which could be linked to the Darhks, finding an anachronism in 1937 in Hollywood. The Legends went there, discovering Helen of Troy on a set. The team later went to the party where Helen was to be introduced and discovered that Damien Darhk was her agent. He told the Legends that he wasn't looking for a fight and wanted to compromise. Sara didn't believe him and took Helen to the Waverider. While the rest of the Legends left the ship to help Stein when he was being attacked by Darhk's allies, Amaya and Zari remained on the ship to keep an eye on Helen. Kuasa was able to get on board the Waverider and started fighting Amaya after stunning Zari. When the rest of the team returned to the ship, they revealed to Zari and Amaya that Sara had been seriously injured by Nora Darhk. While Sara was healing, Zari used the jump ship to take Helen to Themyscira in 1253 B.C. so that she didn't have to return to Troy.[14]

With Sara still unconscious from her last fight, the team decided to tackle another anachronism on their own, encountering one in Vietnam in 1967. Zari, Ray, and Amaya went to a camp to talk to a soldier who had survived a monster attack of. While talking to the solider, Tomaz noticed that they were being watched by a mysterious woman. The women showed Zari, Ray, and Amaya the beast who turned out to be Grodd who intended to restore order in the world, starting with Vietnam. However, in the process, he could trigger a Third World War. Zari, Ray, and Amaya came up with a plan to stop Grodd, but he discovered their plan and told them to be prepared for fire. Later, Mick's father burst into the camp that the Legends had visited was going to kill all of the campers, but Mick was able to convince him not to. After dealing with Grodd, the team returned to the Waverider and later spotted Sara who had awoken from her coma.[15]

Crisis on Earth-X[]
Earth-1 heroes and Earth-X rebels listens to Oliver of Earth-X's bargain

Zari with the other heroes of Earth-1.

When most of the heroes were trapped on Earth-X, Zari, along with the rest of the Legends, rescued the heroes who were trapped in the S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator. Zari and her friends attacked Metallo, eventually destroying him. Then the heroes moved to Waverider, where they began to prepare for a battle when they were interrupted by a message from Oliver Queen of Earth-X who offered a truce in exchange for Supergirl. The heroes did not agree to his proposal, causing a fight in the streets of Central City. It soon became apparent that Overgirl was becoming unstable and if she exploded, Central City would be wiped off the face of the Earth. Harry Wells advised Supergirl to take her counterpart high into space, where she could explode without causing any damage. Green Arrow then murdered his counterpart, ending the war. After the fight, Zari and the rest of the Legends attended the funeral of Martin Stein and then returned to the Waverider with Leo Snart.[16]

Fixing Anachronisms[]
Zari plays with Jax

Zari plays video games with Jax.

Everyone member of the Legends struggled with the loss of Stein during the Earth-X invasion. Leo Snart decided to help the crew express their emotions with the help of a puppet. However, a powerful anachronism emerged in South America in 1000 allowing the Legends to disregard Leo's help. The Legends arrived and discovered that the Vikings worshipped Beebo and had kidnapped a young Stein. The team took the younger version of Stein and returned to the Waverider, where they learned everything. Wanting to retrieve the toy from the Viking settlement in order to fix history, Sara asked for help from Ava Sharpe who helped the Legends infiltrate the settlement. Unfortunately, Mick was caught trying to take the toy and a battle started, which was interrupted by Damien Darhk who pretended to be Odin. While the rest of the Legends were coming up with a plan, Zari tried to advise Jax to save Stein from his fate using a "loophole" in the timeline. The team was able to cause Darhk to flee, completing their mission. After the mission, Jax planned to secretly leave the team. However, the Legends learned of Jax's plan so they prepared a Christmas dinner for him, in memory of their fallen teammate.[17]

Zari and Ray were hanging out in the technical room when John Constantine came aboard the Waverider. Constantine, Sara, and Leo went to an asylum to help a little girl with the rest of the Legends stayed aboard the ship. When Zari and Ray learned that the little girl was Nora Darhk and the demon possessing her had sent Constantine, Sara, and Leo into the past, they took her to CC Jitters to try to convince her to help them get their teammates back. However, Nora saw the report about the Green Arrow on T.V. which scared her and allowed Mallus to take control of her body. The demon began to fight Zari and Ray, destroying the cafe. Eventually, Nora regained control of her body and Damien entered the cafe. He was able to convince her that Mallus would allow her to resurrect him in the future. Despite the failed mission, everyone was able to return to the Waverider. Constantine left, offering his help in the future, and Leo said goodbye to the Legends, deciding to return to his world.[18]

Zari fixes the ship

Zari fixes the ship.

Zari performed a routine inspection of the Waverider. However, she decided to slightly modify Gideon, adding a program that searches for "loopholes" in the timeline, so that she could save her brother without affecting the timeline. When the rest of the Legends returned from their mission, they noticed the changes Zari made to Gideon and Sara ordered her to immediately revert the changes that she made. While she was reverting her changes, a mysterious substance from the pipes sprayed Zari in the face, causing her to fall into a coma.

Zari talks to Sara

After some time, Zari realizes that she is living the same hour over and over again. Over time, she managed to figure out how to fix the time loop and prepared to sacrifice herself for the rest of the Legends. However, Gideon then appeared in human form and explained to Zari that she plugged her into a simulation while she was in a coma so that Zari could figure out her place on the team and learn to trust the other Legends. Zari then awoke and revealed to Sara the task Constantine had entrusted to Ray.[19]

When Sara went on a date with Ava, the rest of the Legends followed the trail of the Totems of Zambesi. The first totem they went after was the Fire Totem, but it already had been stolen by Damien Darhk. The second totem they went after was the Earth Totem which was found in 1717 in the Bahamas. Amaya and Mick set off to retrieve the Earth Totem which turned out to be in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle, causing the Legends to leave them and return to 2018. Shortly after the Legends returned to 2018, Sara arrived on board the Waverider and ordered Zari to repair the ship so that they could return to 1717. In 1717, the Legends successfully captured the earth totem, but lost the Anansi Totem and Ray to Damien and Nora Darhk.[20]

Zari talks to an ancestor of Amaya

Zari talks to an ancestor of Amaya.

When the team discovered that the Darhks had kidnapped Ray, they immediately began their search. In the meantime, Rip Hunter and Wally West appeared on board the Waverider. Zari and Amaya decided to meditate and try to locate Amaya's totem, which would allow them to find Ray. The two women entered the World between worlds and encountered ancestor of Amaya, who told them more about the totems and how they had to work with Kuasa. Zari and Amaya also discovered that all of the anachronisms were destroying the realm that held Mallus prisoner. As soon as they got out of their trance, the two women told the rest of the Legends all of the information that they learned which allowed the team to locate Ray in Berlin in 1962. Wally was able to quickly save Ray by stealing the Fire Totem from the Darhks. After recusing Ray, Wally joined the Legends and the team contacted Time Bureau Director Wilbur Bennett to talk to him about Mallus. However, while they they were talking to him, he was murdered by Grodd.[21]

Zari tried to show Wally around the Waverider and acquaint him with the rules, but she couldn't stand him using his speed. Their tour was interrupted by a series of changes happening on the ship, all linked to an anachronism in Memphis in 1954. The Legends discovered that Elvis Presley never became the "King of Rock & Roll", prompting them to try to meet him at his uncle's mass. When Elvis started playing the guitar, Zari's totem went crazy which forced the team to return to the ship. It turned out that Elvis was the owner of the sixth and final totem, the Death Totem. Wally tried to fix the anachronism by taking Elvis' guitar. However, that didn't fix the timeline. Nate decided that the only way to fix the timeline was to give Elvis his guitar back, let him record his first song, and then take the Death Totem. However, Nate and Amaya ran into trouble while trying to get Elvis' song on the radio, forcing Zari and Wally to work together in order to complete the Legends' mission. While working together, Wally learned from Zari that interfering with history required precision rather than speed.[22]

Zari sees "her brother"

Zari sees "her brother".

With more anachronism appearing and the Time Bureau being unable to handle them all, the Legends decided that they couldn't sit back and risk Mallus escaping from his prison. So, Sara divided the team into several groups and sent each group on a mission to fix a different anachronism. When each group returned to the Waverider from their mission, they found Ray unconscious and Sara wearing the Death Totem. The rest of the Legends had no idea what had happened, so they took refuge in the medical bay to come up with a plan. One by one they tried to stop Sara, but they were unable to communicate with each other because the ship's power had been cut off. After several dozen minutes, the rest of the Legends found a wounded Zari and decided that the only way to fight a totem wielder was with another totem wielder. Amaya ordered Mick to take the Fire Totem which he was able to use to immobilize Sara. With the help of Ava, Sara eventually woke up and apologized rest of the Legends for all of the confusion.[23]

When Zari was observing Ramadan, she became extremely nervous whenever Mick used the Fire Totem. Sara was away on mission, so Amaya took over her duties and asked Zari to teach Mick how to use the totem. However, Mick was constantly hungry and wasn't paying any attention to Zari. After a few hours, she had enough and used the Air Totem to torture Mick. Zari eventually stopped when her connection to the other totems caused her to sense Kuasa's death. Kuasa's death changed the atmosphere in the room and Zari and Mick began to talk honestly, making peace with each other.[10]

Fighting Mallus[]

When Nate noticed that Amaya was gone, he immediately notified the rest of the Legends. Before the team was able to address that problem, Rip Hunter needed their help protecting a young Barack Obama from Grodd. Zari stayed on the Waverider while the rest of the Legends were in the field. She did not join the rest of the team in the field until they began working with Damien Darhk in an effort to stop Mallus. Together with the enemy, the Legends moved the possessed Nora Darhk to a village in Zambesi and waited for the demon's release, equipped with all of the totems. However, the team's plan backfired when Damien unleashed Grodd on the village in an attempt to protect the timeline to keep Mallus from being freed. The Legends succeed in stopping Grodd, but that caused Nora to transform into Mallus, who mocked the ineptitude of the team.[24]

Legends see Mallus

The Legends see Mallus.

The Legends, seeing no chance in a fight against the demon, decided to regroup on Waverider. They were helped by Rip Hunter who sacrificed himself to gain them some time. The team decided that they needed to stop Mallus in order to make Rip's sacrifice count, so they headed to Salvation in 1874. Once the Legends arrived there, they decided to use the power of the totems to create something pure that they could use against Mallus. The team's attempt did not turn out well, which ruined their morale. Ava Sharpe then with reinforcements consisting of Helen of Troy, Kuasa, and Jax. When the armies of Julius Caesar, Freydís, and Blackbeard arrived for the totems, the Legends engaged in a fight with them, joined by Nora and Jonah Hex.

When Mallus showed up, the team was forced to proceed with another attempt to use the power of the totems. This attempt was successful and the team ended up creating a giant Beebo, which they managed to use to defeat Mallus. After the Legends' fight with Mallus, the Time Bureau showed up to wipe the memories of the armies that the Legends fought and to send them back to their times, Zari got a goodbye gift from Hex in the form of a cowboy hat, and Amaya decided time to go back to her time permanently. The team then travelled to Aruba to celebrate their victory, but their leisure was quickly interrupted by Gary Green and John Constantine. Constantine revealed to the Legends that when they freed Mallus they opened up a doorway, and Mallus wasn't the only thing that escaped.[25]

Hunting magical creatures[]

Who told Ava about the dragon?

Zari, Nate, and Ray blame each other.

The Legends removed an anachronism interfering with a tour of The Beatles after which Zari and the others expressed some boredom, feeling a bit demotivated after facing the same problems as usual while Constantine had mentioned that they would battle monsters. The Legends then received a message from Ava Sharpe, who summoned them to the headquarters of the Time Bureau. Sara then asked the team who had told Ava about the dragon head, believing that was the reason for their summoning, and Zari, Nate and Ray all pointed towards each other. However, when they arrived, a surprise party was thrown in their honor for having fixed the final anachronism and they were all given medals from the Bureau.

Unicorn hallucinogen

Zari and the Legends are infected by a unicorn's hallucinogen.

Later, Zari talked to Ray, suspecting he was the one who helped Nora Darhk escape the Time Bureau by giving her a time stone which he eventually admitted to, wanting to give her a second chance. After someone at the Bureau noticed unusual activity in 1969 at Woodstock, Ray and Zari thought it could be Nora and traveled there to investigate. In the woods near Woodstock, Zari and Ray found someone who had their heart ripped out. Soon after, they ran into Sara, Mick, and Nate who were also investigating the disturbance for various reasons. Soon a beautiful unicorn arrived and they watched in amazement until it violently pierced a woman with its horn and ate her heart. It then sprayed Zari, Ray, Mick, and Nate with a glittery goo, only sparing Sara who used Zari as a shield. While Sara left to get help from Constantine, the rest of the Legends got high from the goo, making Zari think her hand was glowing and seeing love all around them.

Zari watches her younger self with her mother.

After the effects of the goo wore off, Zari and the others helped Constantine lure out the unicorn by using Gary Green as bait and planned to send it to Hell. However, at is was pulled through the portal the unicorn bit Gary's arm so the Legends had to help pull him out of its grip. Afterward, Zari talked to Ray, telling him that Nora was dangerous. Zari then took him to a park in 2018 where they saw her younger self with her mother before their lives were ruined by A.R.G.U.S.. She told him how guilty she felt for having the power to go over there and tell her mother what would happen to save them but she never did as that would change history.[9]

While the Legends worked on tracking magical creatures, Constantine suddenly appeared on the Waverider, wanting to join them as a magical consultant. As they talked, they were suddenly alerted to magical activity in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, during the Salem witch trials. Zari, Ray, and Sara entered Salem where they witnessed Jane Hawthorne being accused of witch craft and ruthlessly getting arrested in front of her daughter. As they watched her being taken away, a swarm of crows suddenly appeared and started attacking the villagers. Back on the Waverider, Gideon informed the Legends that on the day Jane was hung, all of the people of Salem spontaneously combusted and the town burnt down, convincing the public that witches were real. Constantine told the team that since Jane was gaged at the time and spells were often spoken, she likely wasn't the witch, leading the team to suspect that it was her daughter Prudence.

Legends meet the Fairy Godmother

The Legends meet the Fairy Godmother.

Following Prudence into the woods, the team had Constantine perform a spell to trap her and force the magical creature to reveal itself, causing a woman wearing a long dress and sporting a wand to appear, revealing herself as Prudence's Fairy Godmother. Constantine began casting a spell to send her to Hell but was stopped by the Fairy Godmother telling him that if he did Prudence would be sent there as well as they were linked. She told Prudence the team wanted to send them to Hell and asked if she wanted her to get rid of them. When she agreed, the Fairy Godmother used her magic to trap them in roots and summon birds to attack them. After Zari told Prudence they were there to help her mother, she asked the Fairy Godmother to release them.

After the Legends brought Prudence to the Waverider, Zari, Sara, and Constantine researched Fairy Godmothers and learned that the only way to stop her was for Prudence to give her up willingly. Zari suggested that all they had to do was help Prudence save her mother and she would give up her Fairy Godmother but Sara told her Jane's execution was part of history and they couldn't change that, much to the dismay of Zari who didn't want to stand by while someone was persecuted for being different much like how it was were she was from. Zari secretly left the ship and found where Jane was held prisoner and tried to convince her to escape with her, but she told Zari that the villagers were just scared and not actually evil and if she left others would suffer.

Zari and Jane Hawthorne

Zari is almost burnt for being a "witch".

Zari watched Jane's trial and got more and more angry as the priest hurt her. She had enough and used her totem to knock the priest out and tried to convince the villagers that he was the true evil and not Jane. Zari started attacking the priest, but she stopped after seeing how scared the villagers were and the priest took her totem and captured her. She was then tied up with Jane to be burned at the stake. However, just as Jane and Zari were about to be burned, Prudence arrived and had her Fairy Godmother release them. Zari managed to convince Prudence to not extract revenge on the town and she released her Godmother, allowing Constantine to banish her to Hell. Zari's necklace that contained the Air Totem was melted when she was being burned at the stake[26], so Ray created a new special bracelet that allowed her to bear her totem at all times.[27]

After the Legends were alerted to magical activity in 1977 in London relating to the punk rock band The Smell, Zari, Sara, Constantine and Mick tried to get close to the band but they ran away after a fight broke out. After forcing Ray to drive them, he infiltrated the band while the other Legends stayed on the Waverider. When Constantine suddenly disappeared Zari followed a tracker Sara had planted on him to Liverpool where she found him talking to a woman. Zari joked about him coming on to the women before he revealed that he was talking to his mother before she had him and died in childbirth, which his father had always blamed him for. When Constantine attempted to kick his own father between the legs, making him sterile, Zari explained that it wouldn't work since it created a paradox.

Later, Ray found out the fugitive was band member Charlie although he asked the Legends not to send her to Hell as she wasn't hurting anyone. However, the team didn't listen and went to attack her only for her to shape-shift into Ray and attack them with his suit. Eventually, they managed to capture her and Zari used her wind powers to contain her while Constantine opened a portal to Hell. However, Charlie then shape-shifted into all of them, ending with their former teammate Amaya and told them they were the monsters for wanting to send someone innocent to Hell. Constantine warned them not to fall for it but Zari told him she couldn't do it and dropped her hold on Charlie. They instead took her as captive on the Waverider while figuring out what to do with her. Later, Zari spoke to Constantine but he interrupted her not wanting a sentimental heart-to-heart. She told him that wasn't what she was doing and instead gave him a surveillance picture of him and his mother which he thanked her for.[27]

Zari Tomaz as a cat

Zari wakes up as a cat in the destroyed timeline.

During one of the Legends' missions, John Constantine and Charlie were in the jump ship, working on a secret side mission to save John's ex-boyfriend, Desmond, and restore Charlie's shape-shifting powers, but Zari intercepted them and brought them back to the Waverider. There, John told them about Neron, a demon who had sent Desmond to hell and had been hunting John down ever since. Zari left to search for loopholes, but Charlie shape-shifted into John as the real John snuck off the ship. Zari dragged Charlie onto the jump ship and followed him to New Orleans, where he broke up with Desmond, driving the latter out of town. The two girls began quickly flying home to warn Sara of John's actions, but a temporal explosion hit the jump ship, knocking them both backward. When Charlie came to, she was excited to have her powers back, but soon realized that Zari had been turned into a cat.[28]

Baffled by the fact that Zari was now a cat, Charlie decided to bring her back to the Waverider, but not before she dropped herself off at a casino in 1962 in Las Vegas. When Charlie met the Custodians of the Chronology and followed them to the Waverider, she heard Zari in the library and wondered why she was still a cat, to which Gideon, who had a holographic full-body human model, explained that the Custodians became homicidal due their disastrous encounter at Woodstock and that the Fairy Godmother, who was also presumably killed, turned Zari into a cat. After the Custodians tried to kill her, Charlie escaped to the jump ship with Zari, flying to the Time Bureau headquarters in 2018.

The three Legends escaping the Custodians of the Chronology with Ava and Mona's help.

Charlie then located John there and showed Zari to him, who transmogrified her back into human form, but ultimately turned her back into a cat after she threatened to set the timeline back to its original course. Trying to return to the jump ship, they had an encounter with Mona Wu, Ava Sharpe, and the Custodians of the Chronology, but the three Legends managed to flee, setting a course back to Woodstock in 1969 and preventing Sara's death by shooting the unicorn from the jump ship.

Unfortunately, it still didn't solve Zari's cat predicament, so they headed back to the Time Bureau, only for Charlie to see new plaques of commemoration for Nate, Ray, and Mick, who were killed in one of their missions, and meet the new version of the team, the Sirens of Space-Time, who told her of the three's tragic demise by the hands of the Fairy Godmother. Charlie briefed John and Zari on the situation, before the Sirens found her, but she successfully escaped and set a course back to Salem in 1692, with John and Zari. After Charlie and John saved Nate, Ray, and Mick from the Fairy Godmother, they returned to the jump ship and found Zari, who was happy not to be a cat anymore until Charlie and John helped her realize that she was now a puppet.

Zari Tomaz as a puppet

Zari wakes up as a puppet in the destroyed timeline.

Searching for an explanation, John was told by the Puppets of Tomorrow that Mick made a bond with the Fairy Godmother, who turned the Legends into puppets and became his new partner in crime, information that he then shared with Zari and Charlie. Charlie and John continued on to fix the mistakes in the timeline until there were no commemorative plaques for any of the Legends in the Time Bureau headquarters and Zari eventually returned to her human form. While Zari was talking to John and Charlie, John suddenly collapsed due to the number of timelines that he was currently experiencing. Charlie tried to persuade John to make the compromised timeline work, but he realized that nothing they do will be in their favor, and told Charlie to have hope in her powers as he did with saving Desmond. When Charlie disagreed and tried to stop him from fixing the timeline, Zari used her air totem to knock her out and fled with John.

Charlie reconciling with Zari

Zari reconciles with Charlie as the latter teases her.

Charlie, eventually realizing that she was what the Legends needed to be peaceful to the fugitives, infiltrated the Waverider and distracted a still-homicidal Sara as John did his part in New Orleans. Zari was waiting on the jump ship when a time wave, caused by John, reverted the timeline to its original state. Charlie, Zari, and John then returned to the Waverider and rejoiced as time was finally and truly fixed. The two girls then left John to tell Sara their time-traveling tale. Once they were in private, Charlie apologized to Zari for stuffing her in a backpack but also, more importantly, for getting off on the wrong foot. Charlie explained that she kept coming back to Amaya's form not because of her attractiveness, as Zari pointed out, but because it was the form she had when she joined the Legends, the first-ever team that held a special place in her heart. Zari forgave Charlie, telling her that destroying history for personal gain had happened to almost everyone on the team, including herself. The two reconciled, and Charlie teased Zari about finding Amaya, hence her, attractive.[29]

The Legends captured Mona Wu after she was caught on film helping Konane escape the Time Bureau. However, Mona insisted that she was innocent and there was a cover-up at the Time Bureau, so Zari convinced Sara to let her dig a bit deeper. After hacking into the Bureau's systems, Zari discovered deleted access logs that revealed that some security footage was removed and replaced from a phone. Nate then revealed to Zari that the phone belonged to his father Hank Heywood. Wanting to believe that his father had a good reason for replacing the footage, Nate came up with a plan to get Hank's phone which involved Zari being Nate's plus-one at a benefit gala. Zari and Nate managed to steal Hank's phone and they discovered that he had deleted footage of two masked men breaking Konane out of his cell and replaced it to frame Mona, meaning he was involved in a cover-up.[30]

As Nate wanted proof to expose his father and Hank decided to hunt down the Legends, Zari began working for the Time Bureau while in actuality gathering evidence against them. She enlisted the help of Gary Green to go through the data that she cloned from Hank's phone while she and Nate "helped" Hank find the Legends. When the Time Bureau hijacked the Waverider, Zari and Nate warned the crew to leave and Zari then sabotaged the ship so Hank couldn't access Gideon. While the Legends were on the run, Zari provided them with information by pretending to be a radio host and leaving subtle messages for them. After Nate convinced Hank to let the Legends go free[31], Zari quit the Time Bureau and rejoined the Legends.[32]

Relationship with Nate[]

I Surrender

Zari singing I Surrender.

After Hank died, Zari and the Legends attended his funeral, where Zari comforted Nate. When Mona realized that something had happened to Jane Austen, Zari and the Legends travelled a wedding Jane attended in 1802 in Bath. Zari ended up interviewing a coachman who claimed he was Kamadeva, the Hindu god of love. He tried to make her fall in love with him, but she rejected his charms and helped bring him aboard the Waverider. During the night, "Kamadeva" affected everyone aboard the Waverider, so Zari confronted him. He revealed that he did what he did because love is a necessity. When Zari argued with him, he revealed that his real name Sunjay and told her how his powers worked. Sunjay then told Zari that he liked her and convinced her to experience love for the first time. Later, under the influence of Sunjay's powers, Zari decided to marry him and started singing a song. Mona eventually found Zari and managed to stop her from marrying Sunjay.[32]

After the mission, Zari wanted to ask Nate out on a date. She was too scared to, but Mona, Mick, and Charlie eventually helped her build up enough courage to send a text. After sending the text, Zari ran into Nate and he told her that he saw her text, but wasn't able to read it because his phone got destroyed. Zari then lied to him about what her text said.[33]

Changing the timeline[]

In order to defeat Neron, the Legends developed a plan to make people not afraid of magical creatures by building Heyworld and showing the creatures to the world. As they began to build Heyworld, Gideon told Zari that Zari's simulation program had detected a change her predicted future. When Zari asked what that change was, Gideon told her that building Heyworld led to an era of understanding and tolerance meaning that the Anti-Meta-Human Act of 2029 never passed. That change to timeline meant that Zari's parents lived out their lives peacefully in Seattle, her brother survives, and she never steals his totem back from A. R. G. U. S., meaning that she never joined the Legends. In order to not lose another Legend, Sara instructed Zari to stay on the Waverider in the temporal zone and broadcast the events of Heyworld to the world.

However, Zari eventually left the temporal zone, sacrificing her time and memories with the Legends, in order to help save Nate's life.[2]

Current timeline[]

Replaced by her brother[]

After the changes to the timeline took effect, Zari was replaced by her brother, Behrad, as the owner of the Air Totem and a member of the Legends.[2]

New multiverse[]

Original timeline[]

"Nate... if you're seeing this, we altered my future at Heyworld. I don't know where I'll be or who I'll be, but I know that I love you. Find me."
—Zari's message to Nate Heywood[src]

Due to the creation of and the events that transpired in Heyworld, the timeline began to change. However, before Zari left the Temporal zone and was affected by these changes, she filmed a fail-safe video that would play for Nate Heywood if she ever disappeared, in which she explained how her life had been altered and asked him to find her.[34]

As a result of her connection with the Air Totem, Zari did not disappear and was instead placed inside of it, like all of her ancestors who had previously wielded it.[35]

Current timeline[]

Inside the World between worlds[]
Zari meets herself from a previous timeline

Zari meets herself from the current timeline.

In 2020, Zari was visited by the version of herself from the current timeline, Zari Tarazi, inside the World between worlds. Zari was given some information about Behrad and her parents in the current timeline and she gave Tarazi a quick version of her backstory. Later, Zari said goodbye to her new self as the the latter left the totem.[35][35]

Loomworld[]
Zari, Nate, and Behrad break the fourth wall

Zari in the body of Zari Tarazi.

After the creation of Loomworld, Zari was able to leave the Air Totem and took over the body of the version of herself from the current timeline. She quickly deduced that the Legends had lost their battle with the Fates and that they were trapped on a television show. The air totem was drawn to her and she used it to break down a door which revealed a hidden doorway that allowed her, Nate, and Behrad Tarazi to enter the television show that starred John Constantine, Astra Logue, and Natalie Logue. Eventually, Zari went through each show of Clotho Productions, gathering the Legends until they were forced to return to their respective shows.

In a bid to bribe Behrad to stay on his television show, Charlie ripped Zari's life thread in half, giving a physical body to both versions of Zari; Behrad then questioned if he now had two sisters.[3]

Now as a separate individual, Zari was a part of the Legends, like her other-self. The team separated into two groups; Zari went with Ava Sharpe, Nate, Mick Rory, Mona Wu, and Gary Green to find the Waverider. After they found the ship in the garbage dump, they discovered that Gideon was not on board, making starting the ship difficult. So Zari used her engineering skills to make Nate, in his steel form, the conductor needed. The other half of the team found themselves in trouble in battle with Atropos, causing Zari and her group to quickly locate the other group with the Waverider. They reached the other group right as the Loom of Fate exploded. Having difficulty to the point of possibly crashing, Ava was ordered by Sara Lance to time-jump the ship to whenever and wherever they could, which was four months into the future.

While working to repair the ship without Gideon, Behrad became her partner; she was delighted to be reunited with her brother, for everything she had ever done was for his benefit. However, she noticed that he was having stress; he confided that he had a vision, as if it were a memory, of saving her from A.R.G.U.S. agents trying to kill her. Zari revealed that it was a memory and that he was regaining his memories from her timeline.

Later, the Legends found Gideon; Lachesis was using the A.I. to work the Fatewatch, a product that everyone was wearing that told them what to do, keeping them mentally and emotionally addicted. Both versions of Zari were assigned to disable the A.I. While Zari began using her hacking skills to deactivate Gideon, Tarazi chose to grab the cord and unplugged Gideon.

With the Fates defeated, Zari celebrated by spending the night with Nate. The next morning, she was teased by Tarazi and Behrad, but, as the three were hanging out, Behrad started to bleed profusely. Zari realized her presence was causing a temporal disturbance with two timelines, one where Behrad is dead and one where he isn't, fighting for control of his life.

After an emotional meeting with the Legends, Zari chose to save her brother and returned to the World between worlds within the Air Totem.[4]

The next morning in 1977 in London, Nate talked to David Bowie about his feelings for Zari and how he missed her.[36]

Problem solver[]

Inside the World between worlds, Zari overheard the conversation between the Tarazi siblings about which of them should have the Air Totem. Annoyed by their bickering, Zari snapped her fingers, causing both siblings to have a copy of the totem around their wrists.[37]

Swapping places[]
Zari Tomaz is reunited with the Legends again

Zari Tomaz is temporaily reunited with the Legends.

Nate began visiting Zari inside the World between worlds. After one visit, Tarazi asked Nate what Zari did inside the Air Totem was surprised to learn that Zari mostly asked about Behrad. Tarazi eventually visited Zari inside the World between worlds and showed her some pictures of Behrad. When she was done, Tarazi told Zari to join Behrad's party before all of the cake was gone. When Zari expressed concern about the timeline, Tarazi told her that she talked to the ancestors and they told her that Behrad should be safe as long as either her or Zari stayed inside the World between worlds. Zari then thanked Tarazi and left the totem to join Behrad's party.[5]

Legends after the fight with Gus

Zari and the Legends after fighting Gus-Gus.

Zari took a video of Gary, Nate and Behrad singing to Gus-Gus who was crying because Sara and Ava asked for constant updates while they were away looking at wedding venues. When Gus-Gus began crying again, Spooner revealed that he was crying because he was growing. At some point, Gus-Gus began aging rapidly and Zari tried to help the other Legends keep him under control. However, Gus-Gus soon grew to a monstrous size and started attacking the Legends. Zari and Behrad used their Air Totems alongside Mick who used his Heat gun in order to get Gus-Gus off of the Waverider. After dealing with Gus-Gus, Zari went to the med bay with the other Legends to check on Lita because they thought she was giving birth, but Lita revealed she just said that she was to get Mick to go to the med bay.[38]

Nate and Zari on a date

Zari and Nate on a camping date.

Since Zari only had 24 hours before she had to go back into the Air Totem, she and Nate decided to go camping so they could spend some time together with no distractions.[6]

After the Legends captured a robot of J. Edgar Hoover in John Constantine's pocket dimension, Tarazi decided to switch places with Zari, knowing that she knew more about robots.[39]

Personality[]

"Hey, I know what it's like to lose the people you love in a senseless war. It makes you desperate, but... if you really want peace, it starts with you."
—Zari Tomaz to Anh Ly[src]

Haunted by the loss of her brother, Behrad, and hardened from years of growing up in a dystopian future where she and other individuals with powers were hunted, Zari Tomaz generally presents herself as a cynical and gruff survivor who prefers to keep other people at arm's length; she was initially unenthusiastic at the prospect of joining the Legends due to not feeling like any sort of team player. Zari tends to resort to sarcasm or blunt honesty as a means of communicating feelings, a quality she shares with Mick Rory.

Zari has a very reserved personality, never wanting to show vulnerability; she tends to bottle up her difficult emotions of sadness and regret, likely because that's what she's done/had to do her entire life. Similarly, Zari seems to have slight anger management issues that cause her to do selfish acts, regardless of their effect on the timeline. However, she opened up about this to Sara Lance, who understood and promised to help her express emotions in a healthy way.[26]

However, Zari's disposition is not entirely sour; besides her dry and teasing sense of humor, she is proven to have some talent in video games and enjoys playing them in her spare time. More noteworthy, Zari is capable of empathy and compassion as the situation warranted, shown as when she connected with Ray Palmer's child-self and actually did so more successfully than Ray himself.[12] Her display of similar empathy and kindness to Prudence Hawthorne and a young Nora Darhk would seem to suggest that she has a general soft spot for children.[26][18] Zari was also just as devastated emotionally by the death of Martin Stein as all of her teammates were. Upon the news of his sacrifice, she sat with Ray, Nate Heywood, and Amaya Jiwe as they mourned and even attended his funeral.[16]

Zari has also shown romantic and even motherly traits since joining the Legends. After faking a relationship with Nate for the latter's parents,[30] they began to experience real feelings for each other. Zari was initially afraid to accept these feelings, allowing Sunjay to easily seduce her, but she came around with the help of Mona Wu[32] and was the first to make a move towards a real relationship[33] and confess her feelings to Nate.[40] After their first-date mission, Zari and Nate acquired the egg of a dragon, whom they chose to care for themselves. They have since given it a name, incubated it, and taken turns holding the egg to provide skin-to-skin contact.[41] All of this indicates that despite Zari's outer image of hardened survival instincts and practiced cynicism, there is a kind, gentle side to her as well. When talking about her relationship interest, Zari has also been hinted to be open to threesomes as shown during her dream where she was making out with both Nate and Sunjay.

Zari has great pride in her Muslim roots, as it is the only thing that she believes still keeps her connected to her family. Throughout her time-traveling adventures with the Legends, Zari honored her traditions by celebrating Ramadan, even though the hunger was making her incredibly irritable.[10]

Powers and abilities[]

Former powers[]

The totems of Zari and Amaya connect

Zari and Amaya's totems connect.

  • Powers via Air Totem: Zari's powers came from the Air Totem, a totem that channels and harnesses the power of air. However, after the timeline changed, Zari never received the totem from her brother, Behrad, since he was never killed. In the current timeline, while possessing the body of Zari Tarazi, Zari was able to wield the Air Totem.[3] Zari regained the totem whenever she temporarily swapped places with Zari Tarazi.[38]
    • Aerokinesis: The totem granted Zari the power to manipulate and generate the air, bending it in whichever way she wanted.[11][3]
      • Air blasts: The totem allowed Zari to fire offensive or defensive blasts of air from her hands.[16][3]
      • Vortex generation: The totem allowed Zari to generate a powerful vortex to shield herself. It's unknown exactly how powerful it is, although in the medically-induced virtually reality Gideon put her in, Zari utilized this power in an attempt to protect the rest of the Legends and the Waverider from a bomb.[19]
      • Flight: The totem allowed Zari to fly and she can also give others this ability, as shown with a young Ray Palmer.[11]
      • De-oxygenation: Zari had demonstrated the power to siphon the air out of people's lungs, eventually causing them to die of hypoxia. However, she never used it to that extent.[26]
  • Totem connection: Since Zari was the wielder of one of the Six Lost Totems of Zambesi, she had a connection to the other totems. This connection even allowed Zari to sense Kuasa's death.[10]
  • Totem recall: Zari had the ability to "call" the Air Totem to her when she didn't possess it.[13][3]
  • Possession: While she was a spirit inside the World between worlds within the Air Totem, Zari was able to escape and take over the body of Zari Tarazi.[3]

Abilities[]

  • Genius-level intellect/Computer specialist/Master computer hacker: Zari was a highly intelligent, experienced computer specialist and hacker; as she was able to hack into an A.R.G.U.S. drone to pixelate her image, allowing her to escape from it.[11] Zari was even able to hack into the Waverider's subsystems, although Gideon knew about it after she did so.[12] Zari also created an advanced computer simulation that would allow the Legends to find "loopholes" in the timeline if needed when they are fixing anachronisms. She also knew how to hack into Gideon's mainframe, easily making it past the first firewall.[4]
    • Trilingual: Zari was capable of fluently speaking English, Farsi, and Arabic.[11]
    • Expert engineer: Zari was proven to be a highly skilled engineer, as she was able to easily repair the Waverider. After the departures of Jefferson Jackson and her co-engineer Wally West, she was the main engineer of the ship. Zari was quickly able to figure out what it would take to get the Waverider off the ground manually after the Fates destroyed Gideon and later helped Behrad repair the Waverider. She was also able to build a device that the Legends could use to locate the Loom of Fate.[4]
    • Timeline/Reality awareness: Zari had an adept ability to find small "loopholes" in the timeline that she can break without severely damaging it. She has used this skill to send Helen of Troy to Themyscira in her time period instead of Troy,[14] and save the life of Jane Hawthorne.[26]
  • Expert hand-to-hand combatant: Zari was proven to have well-coordinated fighting styles such as boxing and krav maga, as seen during the resurrection of Damien Darhk and while saving Helen of Troy. Zari was even skilled enough to roughly hold her own against Sara Lance for a time when the latter was possessed by Mallus but was eventually subdued.
  • Culinary expertise: Due to the fact that Zari had been taught by her mother, Nasreen, she was an accomplished cook, particularly with her cultural dishes; Zari prepared an entire Iftar feast by herself to celebrate the end of Ramadan.[10]
  • Violinist: Zari was a skilled violinist, as she taught herself how to play the violin during a sedative-induced simulation. After waking up, she flawlessly performed Vivaldi's '"L'inverno" (Winter) Concerto No. 4 in F minor, Op. 8, 4 "Winter"; Largo's.[19]
  • Dancing: Zari was a very talented dancer, as seen when she danced with Sunjay in a Bollywood dance number.[32]
  • Singing: Zari was proven to be a good singer, as seen when she sang with Sunjay, Sara, Charlie and Mona Wu.[32]
  • Stealth/Escape artist: As a vigilante, Zari learned to stealthily get herself out of dangerous situations; when Kuasa attacked the A.R.G.U.S. prison truck transporting her, Zari was able to quickly break out of her handcuffs and flee the scene while Kuasa was occupied by the drivers.[11]
  • Totem mastery: Zari is a self-proclaimed "Totem Master". This was proven when she returned to the World between worlds within the Air Totem with ease.[4] She was also able to split the totem into two copies with a snap of her fingers.[37]

Equipment[]

Original multiverse[]

  • Suits: Zari's first suit was a white dress with gold accents that she wore as a Halloween costume.[12] Later, during the Earth-X invasion of Earth-1, Zari received a new suit in black and gold from the Waverider's fabricator.[16]
  • Totem wristband: When Zari's necklace was burned in Salem, Ray Palmer designed her a special bracelet that allows her to bear the Air Totem at all times. The bracelet is also programmed to operate as a smartwatch and pedometer.[27]
    • Air Totem: All of Zari's powers came from her totem, which allows her to manipulate the element of air.[11] However, after the timeline changed, Zari never received the totem from her brother since he was never killed.

Former equipment[]

  • Totem necklace: Zari originally summoned the power of the Air Totem by touching a golden necklace that contained it. The necklace was destroyed when the populace of Salem tried to burn Zari at the stake.[26]
